Extremely rude staff, my friend thought he may have left his glasses there and was totally dismissed by staff and chief came out and said to busy go away, never been spoken to in such a rude manner. Plus service was bad and food was not cooked well and taste was extremely bland. Never going back there and now have to order new glasses

Great night celebrating my grandaughters birthday

Great night out for my grandaughters birthday. Great service food was great service efficient and friendly nothing too much trouble. All 8 of us had a great time . Birthday girl felt special with the birthday decorations cake firework candle and elvis and waitresses singing happy birthday. It's not fine dining but food was tasty hot and all plates were empty. It is what it says on the tin an American style diner and we all loved it

Great American style Diner

My wife and I stopped here this evening for a meal and were very impressed. Atmosphere is great, 50s & 60s American music playing, service was fast and very pleasant from the two ladies who served us. Food was great and I no problems with paying a 10% service charge because I tip anyway. Must be hard for these guys since they moved the road and it's easy to miss now, do yourself a favour, stop in and give them a try.

Avoid at all cost

Avoid at all cost, thought we’d stop by as baby was hungry (on a Friday evening) and dog needed to have some water from being in a car for 2 hrs. Me my partner a small child and dog, dog wasn’t allowed in (I understand that) but wasn’t allowed a baby seat outside either so we said what was we supposed to do if we want to eat here ? We was told that they dont make the rules by 3 sniggering rude woman who barely spoke a word of English. We said we’ll leave it then and left, the woman looked relived like they want the place dead. The chef walked over to the car as we were leaving and said he could give us a chair outside but of course by then we wasn’t even remotely interested. After looking at the dead empty place and checking the reviews… we had a lucky escape ! Weirdest vibe ever, a feeling like I was watching the film “wrong turn”. Shocking

What a fantastic little place

What a fantastic little place. Stopped en route to Southampton from Devon. It's an American style diner with authentic food, decor, music playing and staff uniform. Food was cheap and tasty (I had prawn sandwich, fries and an authentic milkshake), service was FAST and staff
were efficient. I thought the guy was quite sweet but can see how some might think a little abrupt but that's clearly a cultural thing and not intentional (read the other reviews on here...can't please everyone unfortunately). Really worth a visit just to keep it open whilst they do the roads around it...I'll definitely be coming back. Thank you.

Poor customer service from manager via phone

I rang to make a reservation for half 7 but was told the kitchen was closing at 7 so I said ok and asked what time would be good to arrive as it was a 50 minute drive to get to the restaurant and before I could even give a name for the booking or find out a good time to arrive the owner just said bye and hung up the phone. So unbelievably rude and dismissive, they unfortunately, obviously do not want the customers in their diner. I was so looking forward to taking my family of four to eat here but I will not be bothering to enquire again. It’s such a shame as we had a great takeaway from there a few years back. After checking out their reviews it’s clear I’m not alone with my rude experience with the owner of this diner.

1 star service.

The staff were rude and dismissive, the food was piping hot but freezing cold in the centre. We ended up having to go up to the counter and ask for a bill because all waitresses were avoiding our table for some reason. Avoid at all costs!

Keep driving and don’t stop

Stopped here on way back from Cornwall. To start with there are signs everywhere refusing toilet facilities to non customers but as we all wanted drinks we felt we could deal with this. 7 year old was desperate. In entering we were the only customers and were attacked by staff with menus telling us to sit in different places. 12 year old became upset as she said she had a “weird vibe”. 3 waitresses hovered around us and tutted when we just ordered drinks, and then walked off loudly talking in another language. The chefs and I use the term loosely looked like they hadn’t washed in days so no chance of us ordering any food. Toilets were awful and they had a keypad lock so we had to ask to be let in. We couldn’t get out of there quick enough. It was very “strange things” and granddaughter said she felt we might have been the ingredients of the next customers burger. My advice, don’t stop. If you need the toilet, find a bush

Planned visit - BIG MISTAKE!

We planned this visit as a half-way stop on our route to Devon. Looks good online and despite some pretty bad reviews (mostly commenting on bad service and the poor English spoken by staff) we decided it was worth the risk - we were wrong!

I ordered the Full English Breakfast and asked for them to leave off the beans and tomato. When it arrived it was complete with beans and tomato. I pointed this out and the waitress took it away only to bring it back one minute later with the tomato removed and the beans scraped off the plate. At this point I said I’d rather cancel and not order anything but the waitress insisted she would get a fresh breakfast cooked, which she did (I think 😬). The sausages were advertised as homemade which they certainly were not, the bacon was distinctly average, the fried bread was greasy and the fried eggs looked so bad I didn’t even try them. My mother-in-law had eggs Benedict which were cold. My daughter had the full English which came with cold bacon and cold beans. When she complained the waitress called the cook over who said, “they can’t be cold, I cooked them just a minute ago”, then walked off never to return. There were fourteen of us eating and no one was happy with the food.

When we went to pay my daughter said she wasn’t happy to pay for her breakfast. The manager eventually and begrudgingly said she would take off 50% which my daughter refused and said she wasn’t going to pay for a cold breakfast she hadn’t eaten.

Although dissatisfied with both the service and food everyone else paid in full just to avoid any further unpleasantness.

If you can avoid this place then absolutely you should! Don’t be sucked in by the online photos and promises of homemade produce. It’s actually the dictionary definition of a greasy spoon with dirty condiments.

Very rude staff and cold food

Terrible diner. Avoid at all costs. The staff were extremely rude. They got a couple of orders wrong and the food was cold. My dad ordered a breakfast with no beans or tomato. It came with both. When he told them they simply scrapped it off the side of the plate leaving the sauce over all the other items instead of re-doing it. My breakfast was cold. When I told the waiter the bacon and beans were stone cold, he said no they're not, they can't be. I offered him to try them and he didn't know what to say and just walked away. He never came back. I didn't eat the rest of my breakfast. I told another waitress as well and she said we will sort it out at the end with the manager. Little did I know, the manager was the rudest one of them all. She told me she wouldn't take it off the bill and said I should have spoken to her at the time. I told her I spoke to a staff member and it was his responsibility to get her if that is what should have happened. She was extremely rude, huffing and puffing and said she will take 50% off but is not taking the whole breakfast off. When I told her I wasn't paying for it she continued to be very rude and just took it off the bill. I have never experienced such appalling customer service anywhere. My family and I will definitely not be going back!

Avoid this place at all costs!

Avoid this place at all costs!
We were travelling back from Devon on a 6 hour journey and our 3 year old threw up all over himself and the car seat. We stopped at this ropey looking diner to clean him and the car up, in the car park. My husband went in to the “diner” to ask for a bowl of water to help us clean to be practically ignored and then told they don’t have any! (A restaurant that has no water?!)
He came back to the car park and we continued to clean using some kitchen roll and some anti bac wipes we found in the car! After we had bagged up all our rubbish I took the bag inside to ask if they wouldn’t mind popping it in the bin. I noticed the 1000s of signs about taking rubbish with you so thought that would be the best option rather than putting a bag of dirty sick tissues back in the car. To be shouted at by a lady (assume the owner) that no they can’t, they are a restaurant (with no bins apparently) and I have to take it with us. I told her I thought their customer care was appalling and mentioned that they wouldn’t even give us some water to help clean up our child. She just kept shouting that they are a restaurant! I went back in to the car park and next thing I know a man (I assume a chef) followed me out shouting to take my litter home! I continued to tell him how bad their service was that they won’t even help a family in need. Another customer came out and commented over to me about the service and the fact that they weren’t allowed to use the toilet. I then couldn’t believe my eyes when the “owner” came out with her phone and started taking photos and recording us saying she was going to report us!! We asked what she was reporting us for and she said for littering! You could clearly see I had a bin bag in my hand and was putting it in the car! Such a weird place! Hundreds of signs on the entrance warning people about various things! The review below describing this place as something out of “The Hills Have Eyes” is spot on! If I’d have arrived here at night I’d have been terrified!! No surprise there wasn’t a single customer eating inside!

First visit today

First visit today. Had an absolutely amazing burger and ice cream sundae.
There was a couple dancing to the music, just by chance and it gave a great atmosphere.
It would be 5 stars, but the customer service wasn't great.

If I could rate this place zero stars I…

If I could rate this place zero stars I would. The staff were very unfriendly and rude, the table we were placed at was very unclean. Chips tasted like it had been fried in gone off chip fat🤮 and the rest of our food was very cold and anemic and we left only eating a few bites of our food. It had a feeling of the hills have eyes it gave me the creeps. I’m not usually one to complain but it was appalling. The only thing good was the 50’s theme and all the amazing pictures of the 50’s icons.

Stopped here during the recent storm

Stopped here during the recent storm, hoping for a meal and rest. First thing we noticed was the amount of notices outside saying the toilets were for customers only. We have a small dog and asked if that was ok, as no notices saying they were not allowed. A very aggressive and rude manager/owner? Said no dogs as a few weeks ago they had a bad experience. Fair enough. So my wife asked if we could buy some drinks, rest and use the toilet facilities. (Dog in the car of course) to be told no way by the horrible manager/owner. This is no way to treat people, terrible customer service and only generates terrible publicity for any business. Now, all of our friends/family will here about this and it snowballs. So poor.

Magical place to dine at.

We were travelling to Devon and needed somewhere to stop for lunch.

We'd seen Mattia's many times but never really thought of stopping there.

So this time we thought why not gove it a go. And I'm so glad we did. The place has such a good atmosphere and you know from the moment you enter, everything's going to be great.

We drove through 7 states of the US a few years ago hoping to find a diner like this and didn't see one.

And here we are with just the place, conveniently located for any trips to the West country.

The menu was varied; the food and service was excellent and the music and atmosphere transported you back to America in the 1950's.

I can't recommend Mattia's enough! FANTASTIC!

Mattia Diner Sparkford …

I was on my way to Devon and stopped here for lunch. I parked up and there were about 10 signs saying "No Dog Walking" plus a sign warning you are being watched. A bit intimidating. The waitress friendly enough. The decor was a great concept. The burger I had was OK. I have had better from a burger van. Not a typical American Burger at all. The worst thing is I needed the Rest Room before leaving. Couldn't get in there. Rude and abrupt response when I asked how. Easier to break out of Guantanamo Bay. Avoid like the plague.
