Poor quality for some models.

Purchased Hookipa. Blue - non pescription. November 2024. Used it two - three times. Used only recommended tools for cleaning. In March 2025 discovered three little lens scratches.
Warrenty just to send and evaluate would cost almost $40. This is $250 glasses.
I wrote a review somewhat negative on their web site, and they never published.

Product quality has fallen

Have always loved my Maui Jim prescription sunglasses and currently on my third pair. Never had any issue with previous two pairs and only replaced them because my prescription changed over the years.

My current pair, which are 3 years old have been carefully treated in exactly the same way as previous pairs, have a serious issue with the coating wearing off the lens. This badly affects both the look and effectiveness of the glasses.

Sent glasses back to Maui Jim through vendor and their response was that glasses were out of warranty and that damage must be chemical due to suncream or glass cleaners.

This is simply untrue and optical technicians who have examined the glasses have rubbished this explanation.

Manufacturing standards has simply fallen and lens are no longer a premium product...although charging a premium price.

Interested to see some other posts here highlighting exactly the same issue.

Great product, great customer service

I purchased a pair of Ohai sunglasses 13 months ago. A screw had come loose and lost. I contacted Maui Jim and asked them to send a screw in the post. Unfortunately, they didn't send it along but asked instead that I send my sunglasses to them (this is the only reason why it's 4, and not 5, stars).

As I live just under an hour away from the repair centre, I asked if I could drive over for the repair. They confirmed the address and I popped over.

Whilst there, they immediately checked the sunglasses over and took it in for repair. A chap named Tony helped me out - and he was pleasant, helpful, and paid attention to detail.

When he inspected the sunglasses, he noticed that not only my screw was missing, but the nose bridge pieces too! He went away and fixed them and, when he came back, he informed me that he found that the frame was ever so slightly bent, and so was the nose bridge (I didn't realise I was mistreating them!). He replaced them all, free of charge (under warranty still) in rapid time.

Uber impressed. This was a great test of my loyalty to the brand: they're my first pair of sunglasses with them, but they won't be the last. More than happy with the product too - I've moved away from RayBan and much prefer the quality and customer serivce.

2 year maximum use

purchased Maui Jim prescription sun glasses. I am a low sunglass user. in 2 years the coating on the glasses is coming off. (missed warranty ). No help from place I purchased except to buy new $300 lenses. I have contacted company directly and although kind, would not help or replace or take any responsibility for lens defect (they do make the lenses not a separate company). So don't expect more than 2 years of use. My husband has 20 year old Ray Bans and they look better than the Maui Jims. Very disappointed!

Stick to Rayban or Oakley for quality

Firstly, Maui Jim UK customer services is superb without question. However; the lenses on the sunglasses aren’t that great. I own lots of pairs of Rayban and Oakley sunglasses and have never had any issues. I bought one pair of Maui Jim sunglasses for my wife, the Kawika blue lense. Within a couple of weeks the lenses had lots of tiny scratches all over them but she had only wore them on two occasions which was strange. We took them to UK customer service as it was fairly local to us and they checked our receipt and changed the lenses without question - fantastic. The only thing we could put it down to was dusty grit in the cleaner cloth maybe, otherwise no clue why they scratched soo easy. I checked my Rayban glasses which I’ve used on hols for years and no scratches anywhere. Seems strange to me but now these Maui’s are sat in drawer never used, she just uses Rayban, far cheaper and you can’t fault the quality of frames and lenses.
It’s a shame because I want to give 5 stars here but that would be because of Customer Services and not the quality of the glasses but my wife is gutted about the quality. It’s also worth mentioning the Maui’s have never been out of the UK, so we’re not used on a beach holiday where sand could get the lense, so again, only used a couple of times in the UK whilst driving the car and walking about. Not great and unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend Maui’s or buy them again when compared to Ray’s or Oakley.

Bought at pair of Southern Cross…

Bought at pair of Southern Cross sunglasses when I was in Aus last year and loved them.
Got them out this weekend and one of the lenses was shattered. Look up repairs and found UK site was in Guildford which is near me. Pop over to drop off sunglasses for repair - was told to hang while the technician had a look. 5 mins later Dave appeared and said’ there you go, all done!!’. Best news all covered under warranty.
Thank you Maui Jim - top service

Poor aftermarket

Bought a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses last August, simply because I love them. It’s the third pair I’ve bought. Unfortunately, my puppy got hold of them over the Easter break, and chewed the ends of both temples. From the Maui Jim Website, I noticed they have a repair option, so I booked a repair with them. As I’m heading off on holidays, in just over a week’s time, I rang them to see how long the repair would take. They couldn’t guarantee my glasses would be returned prior to my departure, so I asked if I could buy the parts and fit them myself. Because of their red tape, I was told I couldn’t buy parts and fit them myself. For this reason I feel totally let down by Maui Jim and I will never buy another pair.

Dreadful Communication

I ordered a pair of Maui Jim glasses on backorder. After many weeks I was advised they were "in" and I needed to pay...they took my credit card details, we spoke about delivery dates. The glasses did not arrive. I rang to be told they had allocated the glasses to someone else. I again went on backorder. No follow up communication. I called...again and they suggested alternatives. I did not ask them to cancel my backorder. I have just called again to be told my order has been cancelled when they spoke about alternatives. AAAAGGGGHHHH. Maui Jim I give up on you.

Maui Jim HT lenses transformed my hiking trip of a lifetime

I decided to get a new Maui Jim style and lens for a hiking trip to Patagonia and it turned out way better than expected.

Over the last 30+ years I’ve gone from grey to rose to bronze lenses and from regular to bifocals (an aging thing). A couple months ago I learned I needed a prescription lens and stuck with Maui Jim because the product and service have proven to be worth the cost.

My strategy was to use the Rx sunglasses for golf and a planned hiking trip to Patagonia. The new HT tint was recommended. It would keep things sharp in cloudy or rainy weather as well as in sun.

When they arrived I was happy with the new sharpness of my vision, but going to Patagonia took that feeling to a new level. Transformed the experience.

We hiked for 7-12 hours daily in all kinds of weather. The glasses handled rain, snow, bright sun, super heavy wind and my sweat from all the steep ups and downs flawlessly. They were comfortable, anchored to my head, protected my eyes from the elements, gave me awesome clarity and depth perception, and thinking back, I didn’t consciously know that I had them on.

Great lens, sturdy frame, great prescription technology. Unexpectedly a highlight of the awesome trip! Thanks!

Very dissatisfied with their warranty…

Very dissatisfied with their warranty and customer service. They use an outside source for repairs and the person I spoke to used derogatory terms in reference to his employees and the mistakes made. While also not assisting me with my request or understandings. I would not pay for what I did for my glasses knowing all this. Plus the scratch really easily for $400 glasses

No repairs parts???

While the lens do block sun and glare, getting a $299 pair of sunglasses fixed is impossible. After only 5 years, the tips of both temple pieces have disintegrated. They no longer have the small ear pieces, so they can’t be repaired. (Why would they not keep these parts in stock? I’m sure we aren’t the only ones.) We were offered a 50% off coupons, but we do not want to pay $150 for a pair of sunglasses that will only last 5 years.

A perfect company

I do not think there is another American company like MJ, offering top quality, numerous styles and top customer service. Not only do they constantly create amazing new styles but they stand behind their product to a degree I have never seen before. Everyone ( and I mean EVERYONE) looking for sunglasses will find a pair which matches her/his needs and style. I have two pairs and I plan on buying another one…

Low quality products

They sell plain sunglasses worth $200 but don't bother to maintain the quality even worth $10. Hinges have gone loose within 1st year of purchase, so please stay away from this brand.

Great Repair Experience

Just wanted to share a great repair experience with Maui Jim, supported by Tony.B

I had a pair of sunglasses from 10 years ago, it's badly scratched. I recently discovered Maui have an after sales service to repair lens, after submitting this request, I was assigned Tony whom has been super responsive to helping me throughout the entire process. He has even gone above and beyond to ensure my repair is going to be returned as if they are a brand new pair.

Super impressed with the entire process, will be buying more MJ's in the future.
