Recently opened a Lifetime ISA with Newcastle after a bad experience at Skipton and found the process easy, intuitive and straightforward. Mobile app activated and seems easy to use, deposits accepted quickly and service over the phone has been friendly and knowledgeable. I’d highly recommend Newcastle so far.

You can open an account online but don't walk into Gosforth branch & expect it to happen without an appointment. Even though, the 2 customer service faced staff, had no customers in sight.
Could've been done in a couple of minutes & after all, it's 2025.& not the dark ages.
Their no can do attitude has left me wondering, where should I invest next

If you ever want to experience what banking would've felt like in 1066, look no further than Newcastle Building Society.
All of this chaos — and I mean full-blown sitcom-level chaos — happened over £1.75.
I asked them to reconcile an address issue on my account. They treated this request like I’d asked them to launch a rocket from Gosforth to the moon.
Not only did nothing get fixed, but they somehow made the problem more confusing, which I didn’t think was physically possible.
I requested a simple statement to clarify my £1.75 situation. Apparently that was too much.
Even when I warned them that the next step could involve the finacial ombudsaman, they still couldn’t be bothered. I think the computers went for a lie-down.
Their complaints department? Imagine a medieval castle surrounded by a moat, except instead of archers, it’s staffed by people whose only skill is selective reading.
Letters to the Chief Executive must travel through some sort of complaint-deflecting forcefield because the important points never make it to the other side.
And the best part?
Someone once told me years ago:
"Don’t waste your time with Newcastle Building Society. Their technology is from the Dark Ages and their customer service is worse."
I thought that was an exaggeration.
No. I can now confirm it’s a factual documentary.
So yes — after weeks of hassle, confusion, and technological time travel, all over £1.75, I can proudly say:
This is the most expensive £1.75 laugh I’ve ever had.

I am absolutely fuming at their incompetence. I opened an ISA with them in 2022, as confirmed by emails from them at the time. I have not gone to transfer my ISA to another provider and they have told me it is not an ISA. I've lost all the tax advantages from the last few years, and will be behind on the money in my ISA now for the rest of my life.

Payments into Savings Accounts
Before opening a savings account with Newcastle Building Society, I would strongly recommend you ask whether there are any restrictions on how you pay into the account ie by cash, cheque or debit card. I am currently in dispute with the Society over cash payments I have made into their Six Monthly Account. They need to be more upfront with customers at the point of opening accounts to avoid potential injury to feelings. I am currently raising this with the Financial Services Ombudsman
A word to the wise: As expected, no-one from Newcastle Building Society (alias Beth) ever got back to me. Beware of false promises!

The local branch was very convenient. It was very helpful to be able to actually speak to a real person. The staff were all very accommodating, friendly and helpful. There is a wide range of products available and the staff are able to take the time to discuss personal requirements.

My late father was introduced to the Will Writing Company by this dreadful organisation. A working class man sold down the river to spivs offering unregulated services. It took two years and £4000 for me to sort out the mess that they got him into - no help, no support and certainly nothing to see here - not our fault. Shame on them. My father foolishly trusted them - I have utter contempt for this company.

Local, helpful, friendly and efficient staff served me in this small branch. When banks have closed in the villages, it is wonderful that a member-owned (mutual) building society is so strongly community-minded... demonstrating the ethos, and providing the highest standard of service to customers. Thank you
