Have stayed for 2 nights ..

Have stayed for 2 nights ..1st night at garden view...garden view we looked over the rooves of another building
The room was very cold and because of a wedding already in the hall we weren't allowed to use bar/ restaurant or breakfast. Instead we had to use a pub 7 minutes walk away on an unlit road in the pouring rain!.
2nd night paying over £350 in ocean road room....no sight of the ocean...supposedly main building ..nope its not.
No bath robes / no heating / no chocolates
Absolutely disgusting ...making money from a wedding venue.
Wedding itself was excellent but definitely not worth staying as its not even close to a 5 star hotel....would be lucky to make it 3!!
Will never be back

Expensive Rip off not waht is sold

The following is from a letter submitted to their CEO (Stuart Bailey) expressing my disgust and intention to pursue this with trading standards. So far no response to my registered letter asking for response in 7 days but will not let this go easily I am that incensed.

We booked a 3 night stay at Newton Hall (7 to10 Aug) on the basis that it looked appealing form the photographs claiming to be charming, romantic and set in idyllic surroundings. As soon as we arrived and walked up to the hall we started to see that It wasn't going to live up to the billing. No matter, we still expected a pleasant stay. We were then told 'you are in a garden room' - sounds nice - a room with a garden view which is clearly what most people would think to be the case. Before I proceed it is worth pointing out that this was over £400 a night.
• After walking up the steps to reception in the hall, we were then guided along a gravel path, through what is laughingly called a garden, and presented with a concrete hut
• At this point I was seething as we had expected a proper hotel room in classy surroundings - not some ugly glamping pod. A garden room to me is a room with a garden view - not a room in a shared concrete hut in the garden
• We instantly complained but it soon became clear nobody had authority to do anything as the hall was totally commandeered by a wedding party. Tried to blame the situation on the fact the booking was made via Booking.com. From memory I think I initially looked on Tripadvisor and probably got directed to booking.com to make the reservation. Not that It should matter anyway - they obviously choose to use them as a booking agent.
• They guy who guided us to this room who normally sits on the entrance in a little hut of his own called 'reception' said he would get the general manager James Martin to come and see us. Not that it would have done any good but waited for over 45 mins and he never showed up. Obviously keeping guests happy is not a high priority.
• Incidentally we went to the wrong reception initially and should have turned into the next entrance for the second-class citizens that are not attending the wedding and are located in the glamping pods instead. Most of the time we went past this 'reception' it was closed anyway
• It gets better - for over £400 a night we have to walk through an overgrown track down a road with no footpath to the pub for breakfast or alternatively we can have a doggie bag in our room. Same story if you want a drink as the bar in the hall is handed over to the wedding guests. Needless to say the road is unlit as well. Luckily it did not rain during our stay
• in the evening, we had to wait till 8.00 pm for a table after initially being told at about 6.00 pm that we could not be accommodated. When we eventually sat down ordered 2 steak and ale pies that arrived 45 minutes later. (£20 each and weren't that great)
• If I had paid maybe £150 a night for a glamping pod (which I wouldn't do anyway) I would have been happy with the room but it was not what we wanted or had been sold although I am sure there is some small print somewhere explaining what a garden room really is.
• The 5 star rating for this place - even the hall is a joke. I can only assume it is self-proclaimed as no independent third party would make this assessment. I have checked since we got back and nearby Doxford Hall and Spa which is rated 4 star by the AA knocks spots off this place and for a 4 night stay is about 70% of the price we paid for 3 nights.

Unfortunately there is no facility to leave photographs as these paint a thousand word but they are on Tripadvisor if you want to take a look

Dirty

We stayed for 1 night room was £150 , on arrival were told breakfast was not included as our room was not in the main hall ! it was £35 to add breakfast on.
The carpet was dirty and the room had a dog smell the occasional chair in room was very grubby, there was a contact lens on the side of the sink that only showed when sink area was wet.
Radiators did not work, kettle did not fit under tap so had to fill with cup. The seal on complimentary water was open .
Overall very dirty and disappointing I did tell reception when handing key back but she did not say anything!

No refund?

I booked 2 rooms as I was due to attend a wedding in July 2026. Unfortunately the wedding has been cancelled (the couple have split) I telephoned to cancel expecting a full refund of the £50 deposit but was told it is non-refundable! Seriously this is 2 years in advance, I stay in hotels a lot I have NEVER before encountered such a policy. Also I was not informed at the time of booking that this was the policy, the booking was made over the phone, I did not receive any documentation to say that this was the policy.
I do not think that this bodes well for service at this hotel if this is the way they treat prospective customers. If you are considering staying here or getting married here then I would give serious consideration to this. Any business that treats people this way is to be avoided!

On 29th of May we should have stayed at…

On 29th of May we should have stayed at Newton Hall hotel for 1 Night in The Ocean Road Room at a cost of £284.75.
As we were attending a wedding. We didn’t get in our room till 7pm due to the time of the wedding which wasn’t a problem as we had planned to get changed then rejoin the nighttime reception. We were horrified by what we found when we went up to the room there was toilet paper left in the toilet pan, The bedding had black marks on it, the seats were both stained, the table was all scratched and marked, there was an awful smell in one side of the room and the bath had not been cleaned properly as there was what looked like a Tic and dead flys in the bath. Also there was grime in the shower area which was disgusting and they definitely did not put Lux in Luxurious.
I went to reception and asked the young lady to get the manager to come to our room.
My wife explained to the duty manager that there was an awful smell either like a dog or drains. We told him that the reason we had booked Ocean Road room was because it is not one of your dog friendly rooms. He assured us that there had been no dogs allowed in that room.
The duty manager asked us to look at another room but this was one of the Dog friendly rooms in the main hall and not to our taste. We asked for a full refund and he said he wasn’t authorised to do that and by this time it was nearly 8pm our day had been totally ruined and we had no option but to leave.
The Duty manager emailed me at 11pm to ask me if I would send him the photos I had taken so he could add them to his report to the Estate manager who could give a refund and the estate manager would contact me in the next 24hours.
I was not contacted I sent an email I phoned (don’t phone the hall no one ever answers it) after phoning the wedding phone number and saying if I didn’t get a call back I would be driving up to the hall I finally got to speak to the estate manager Andrew Jeffery who said he had been too busy with weddings to call me back.
He said he would look into my complaint and he phoned me on the Monday to say they would offer me a complimentary stay in any of their hotels. I told him I wanted a full refund as they had totally ruined the day for us. I eventually got my money back on the 5th June but no offer of any good will I didn’t even get an email of apology from the Estate manager and he told me he couldn’t authorise a refund absolutely disgusting service from this company please look at the photos and zoom in. I have stayed in hotels all over the world and I have never had such a shoddy room or service.

Disgustingly filthy hottub

We arrived a little early and were told we could sit in the lounges in the hall itself.manager greeted us and was less than helpfull didn't even tell us there was a bar we could get a drink at?
On arrival to our garden room the floors inside the garden rooms are broke and uneven to walk on in the bathroom the floor was so broke it grabbed the back of my shoe and I fell. The hottub was filthy and the manager said it gad bern cleaned that day! He said it was sediment in the pipes thst had got back into the tub after it was refilled, he said he would have the water drained and refilled which would take an hour. This was at 5.30 pm. The hottub should have been cleaned before we arrived he tried telling me it had but I wish i coukd attavh the vids/pics i have of the disgusting dirty hottub
The electric then went out so we demanded our money back and left

What a Joke

We recently visited here for my sisters wedding.
I can't fault the actual wedding, when it finally happened but what a total nightmare the rest of the weekend was.

We arrived on the Thursday
When checking into to the garden rooms, check in was very disjointed which didn't fill us with much hope.

Our plan for booking 2 nights in the garden rooms was to have a relaxing evening before the wedding day,
Go for breakfast the morning after and come back and get ready at our leasure.

When heading to the garden rooms, the paths weren't great, with loose chippings, not great for elderly people or women in heels.

The room seemed nice when entering but we soon realised they weren't great.
We had one room and my mum had the adjoining room.

Upon going to the bathroom we realised that there was no way of shutting the door as it overlapped the frame. There was a strange drain smell and the sink didn't drain well.

There is no way of getting any fresh air into the rooms without opening the massive sliding door. This isn't an option though if you have dogs with you.
The main shock was the outside space, the hot tub had lots of debris floating in it and didn't smell great, the patio was surrounded by and covered in mud and there was a hosepipe just left thrown on the decking.
It wasn't just unsightly, it was dangerous

My mums bathroom had a leek somewhere, so her towels kept getting wet.

Sleeping wasn't easy as the room was stuffy, the heat was immense coming from the bathroom and the door made an awful noise when my partner whent through it.

Fast forward to the morning of the wedding.
I was awoken by my mum calling from her room at 7.15 to say the power had gone off whilst she was in the shower, we presumed something had fused but couldn't find anything.

We had a nock on the door at 8 from my brother in law to say the hole power was off in the area and was due to come back on at 9 am.
This wasn't ideal but wasn't the end of the world. We were due to go to the joiners for breakfast, but the power was off there. Nobody came the the room to see of everything was OK or to offer us an alternative breakfast.
9 am came, the power didn't come back on and the time for reconnection moved to 12.
Baring in mind my sisters wedding was at 1pm, this caused some panic.
My mum was sat with wet hair, my sister had no shower or power to get ready.
The next update was the power was due to come back on at 6pm, this would be after the wedding.
After speaking with various staff members, no solutions were being offered.
Luckily we had family members staying within 10 miles and they had power.
Many of the guests had to get in cars and rush to various places to get washed and ready.
The wedding went ahead in the dark and Luckily Northern power grid got a generator, to power the whole area. If they hadn't, who knows what would of happened.
The hall and staff had no contingency plans what so ever.
The wedding and evening do did go ahead but the stress and upset did ruin the weekend.

I must point out that there is no emergency lighting in the rooms.
I would of thought this would be a minimal requirement.

I have waited to write this review as my sister wanted to speak with the venue first and negotiate some compensation.

Their response has been a joke.
Their third and final offer was a 45% refund of our first night's stay.

I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and I certainly would want anyone else to risk their big day being spoilt as apparently its happened before.
There is a terrible smell of sewage throughout the whole complex.

So many people paid so much money to stay at in the garden rooms that were at my sisters wedding and Newton hall don't care in the slightest about people's terrible stays.

Price and service?

We recently stayed at Newton Hall for a family wedding which the ceremony was absolutely beautiful, we could not fault 1 thing with how everything was handled so smoothly. However, we stayed at the venue for the night and had nothing but problems with our room. We paid £150 for 1 night (DISCOUNTED) and the room did not live up to the price at all. As I tried to shower on the night time, when the shower got cut off freezing cold then off fully. They then went on to explain the shower broke the week before yet they still put us in that room to stay! They allowed us to use another rooms shower which was on the very top floor which they expected me to walk up to in my towel as I hadn’t finished my shower yet. The heating was also broke in our room so as you can imagine it being in October it was very very cold. The prices of the drinks were unbelievable and much more expensive than London where the rates are higher. When we mentioned at checkout about all of the issues, which we had raised before, they just said the room had a plumbing issue which is just not acceptable for the price people are paying!! Overall I would not be rushing back to stay again!

Punching above it’s weight.

Garden room was lovely except for:
Hot tub not working on day of arrival.
Raised complaint nothing done.
Came back the next evening - still not sorted, also found the room had been left unlocked from both the front AND back doors!!
Dirty robes we had placed in shower for exchange had simply been rehung on the bathroom door.
No top up of tea or milk.
One small can of water on arrival. No water left on second night.
All in all I can get a better service from a simple Marriott bonvoy! To say this is 5 star is an mis-advert. 3*+ maybe 4* on a good day but not 5*. Not at all.
All the numbers in the room phone are pointless because no one answers. The garden room pod reception is not staffed after 6pm, so good luck finding anyone to help with your enquiry and hope you don’t have an emergency.
Not the best stay by a long long stretch.

Above and beyond

We were fortunate enough to be invited to wedding at Newton Hall recently. The wedding itself was a fantastic occasion, the staff looked after the guests very well and very professionally - I can only imagine the wedding party had even better attention! I would have given the venue a 4 or 5 star review based solely on that but a hard 5 was ensured by Bekka, one of the ladies they had on reception.

We were unfortunate to have one of our party injure themselves during a ceilidh dance (not an uncommon occurrence at a good ceilidh!). Anyway, this meant trying to secure a taxi at short notice and of course, no taxi firm were willing or able to accomodate us after 2300 on a Friday night. On hearing this, Bekka offered us, all 4 of us, a lift home herself. Wonderful generosity and hugely appreciated! 5 stars for Bekka alone. :-)

Next day, off to Alnwick minor injuries unit - who also get high marks!
