Charged £135 for a "subscription" I never agreed to — company won't identify itself or provide proof

In June 2026 I topped up a prepaid Tesco mobile SIM with £10 while I was in the UK. Without my knowledge, that transaction apparently enrolled me in a recurring £45/month "subscription" through Prepaid Mobile Recharge (prepaid-mobile-recharge.com, which also emails from topup-mobile.co). I was charged three times — 5 June, 7 July, and 6 August — a total of £135, for a service I never used and don't recall knowingly agreeing to.

For context on why this hit especially hard: I was in the UK because my father had just passed away, and I needed working phone service to organize his funeral and start administering his estate. Untangling a hidden subscription with a company that won't even confirm its legal name was the last thing I had bandwidth for.

Here's how my attempt to resolve it went, in order:

7 Aug: I emailed asking them to cancel the subscription and refund all three charges.
8 Aug: "Chelsea" in Customer Support cancelled the subscription but refused any refund, saying my cancellation came outside the free trial period.
9 Aug: I replied that I never signed up for or authorized a recurring charge. "Margaret," who signs off as "Compliance Officer," responded with a boilerplate explanation of a "3-day free trial" and a "Terms & Conditions checkbox," and offered a 20% partial refund of only the most recent charge as a "goodwill gesture."
9 Aug (same day): I declined the 20% offer and asked Margaret directly for (1) a copy of the actual sign-up page I supposedly agreed to, and (2) the legal name of the company behind the service, since it was reached via what looked like a Tesco top-up flow.
10 Aug: Margaret repeated nearly the same boilerplate and called the 20% offer "final." Neither question was answered.
10 Aug (my reply): I asked again, specifically, for the registered company name and a copy of the sign-up page.
11 Aug: Margaret's reply linked only to the general Terms & Conditions page on their website — not the actual page I would have seen at sign-up — and still gave no company registration details. The refund offer stayed at 20%.

A few things stand out. Their own email footer states the subscription fee is "€49/month," not the £45 I was actually charged — which undercuts their repeated claim that pricing is "clearly outlined" at sign-up. And "Margaret, Compliance Officer" has only ever signed with a first name, with no surname, employee ID, or company registration details provided despite being asked twice — for a role whose whole job is compliance and accountability, that's notable on its own.

I want to be clear that I can't independently verify what happens on their sign-up flow, so I won't say outright that this is fraud — but based on my own experience, and after reading a number of similar complaints from other reviewers here describing the same pattern (small top-up, hidden recurring charge, refusal to refund, a scripted "20%" offer), it's hard to see this as anything other than a deliberate, recurring practice rather than an isolated mistake.

I've already disputed all three charges with my credit card company. I'd encourage anyone else affected to do the same, and to report this to UK Trading Standards. My advice to other readers: if you're topping up a phone in the UK, go directly through your carrier or a recognized retailer — not a third-party link — and check the domain carefully before entering card details.

Charged My elderly mother twice…

Charged My elderly mother twice payments almost £50 after she thought she had just bought a £10 online top up (she never received any phone credit either)
I emailed the company and was told the "subscription" had now been cancelled and no further money would be taken.
My mother has just had another payment go from her account.
This is theft.
Avoid this robbing company who target vulnerable people at all costs.

Total Scam – Subscription Trap!

0 stars if I could. Please avoid this company! I bought a £10 Lebara top-up for a friend and was secretly signed up for a £49/month subscription that I never asked for or agreed to.
When I complained, they refused a full refund even after admitting in an email that their subscription terms "may not have been as clear as they should have been." Absolute scam site.

0 star for this company guys please please don’t buy anything from this company.
Purchase the £30 EE topup for my friend which received after 2 days and this morning they charge me £49 for nonsense subscription which I never ask for, so I complain this morning and got email back and as they mention on email that the subscription terms may not have been as clear as they should have been but they still took from my account £49.
Scam Scam scam.
And I’m going to take legal action on this company as they have clearly mention even in they own email which I have proof that the subscription terms may not have been as clear as they should have.

Deceptive and dishonest platform

This site is exceedingly deceptive in that merely purchasing a top-up one "subscribes" to not merely an entry-level subscription but their premium subscription. I would never have selected a subscription of £49. Trying to resolve this problem is met with a paltry 20% refund offer.

Then, I received an email stating that I'd taken another subscription of €9 which is not the case.

Very infuruating and time-consuming trying to establish that I have been misleadingly billed as no proof can be provided that I selected either of these options.

⚠️ This is a scam

⚠️ This is a scam — please be careful.
⚠️ This is a scam — please be careful.

I tried to top up my O2 Pay As You Go mobile, but the website I found appeared to be part of O2 when it absolutely was not.

Thankfully, Barclays blocked the transaction before any money was taken. I then had to change my details as a precaution and take steps to protect myself.

Please be extremely careful when topping up your mobile. I would strongly recommend avoiding unfamiliar third-party websites and using only the official O2 channels. Check the website address carefully before entering any personal or payment details.
I was lucky that my bank blocked it. Please don’t make the same mistake I did.

Total scam

Total scam. I topped up my mother's account, for what I thought was a one-off. 2 days later I had a subscription payment requested. I had no idea that I had been signed up to any kind of subscription. I am contesting this and they have offered me a partial refund which is completely unacceptable because I apparently had a 3-day free trial and I cancelled the subscription well within this time anyway. I am still fighting to get my money back and reporting this company as fraudulent. Avoid at all costs.

It's a fraud and scam. They sign you up for subscription without your knowledge. I once tried to top up my O2 number as O2 app is super difficult as well. But I didn't get that credit. I disputed it then suddenly I got a transaction of 49 pounds today saying I have subscribed and agreed to their terms and conditions. Avoid, big red flag. It's a scam company. Be very careful before using this…

Be very careful before using this website.

At first glance, it looks like a normal mobile top-up service. The page mainly asks for your mobile number and how much credit you want to buy, so it's easy to assume you're making a one-off purchase.

What I didn't realise was that I had apparently signed up for a £49 per month subscription. The information about the membership is displayed in much smaller text and is easy to miss, especially if you're using the site quickly on a phone.

Even the confirmation emails didn't make it obvious that I had subscribed to a recurring monthly membership, so I only discovered it after seeing the charge.

In my opinion, the website's design is misleading and could easily cause customers to believe they are simply purchasing a mobile top-up rather than enrolling in an ongoing subscription.

My advice is to read every page very carefully before entering your payment details. If you're only looking to top up your mobile, make sure you understand exactly what you're agreeing to before completing the purchase.

Update 10/08/2026

They have charged another £49 today, it is showing as pending.

If first payment they took was an autorised subscription what is the justification for today.

They have kept my bank details and charging it as they please.
