I recommend this restaurant

I recommend this restaurant. Attentive staff, very sensible prices especially for the area, food very good standard, The wine came in at a reasonable price for the quality. Its a oasis of calm in the area. Its also got a really nice bar area for a glass of something or a cocktail. Will be back. Thanks.

July 2018, I went to Richoux, Piccadilly for afternoon tea with a friend to celebrate my birthday, booked by telephone a couple of days in advance. I stated that one of the traditional afternoon teas needed to be Gluten free. I was told this was fine, and should just tell the waiting staff on arriving that I would need Gluten Free.

We were shown to a table, when we asked about the Gluten free menu the waitress said there was nothing. We asked for the manager (Georges), but after 10 minutes he had not arrived so we had to ask the waitress for him again, eventually he came over. We explained that we were advised on the phone that Gluten free afternoon tea options were readily available and we should just ask for this on arrival. The manager struggled to comprehend the problem and said there were no Gluten-free foods available. He even suggested I eat some of the non-Gluten free food; we explained these would make me ill.

Having previously stated there were no Gluten free foods, the manager then said they might have a bit of gluten-free bread so might be able to make me a cheese sandwich. I enquired why the usual fillings offered on the traditional afternoon tea menu (that I had my voucher for) were not available with Gluten free bread. He did not seem to understand and finally said that they might have a chocolate brownie and suggested I just have non-Gluten free items. Again, we explained that eating gluten would make me ill, but he did not seem to grasp the severity of this suggestion.

He was not willing or able to offer Gluten-free foods that could constitute ‘afternoon tea’. We were very upset as this was supposed to be a special birthday treat so left.

I am extremely concerned that the staff in Richoux had no knowledge of food intolerances and the severity of consequences of eating these foods – for some the result can be fatal.

Don't go to this place if you have any food intolerances.
