Serious hygiene issue – bed bug infestation and health impact

We stayed one night at D’Amelia Hotel in Fátima (7–8 February) and experienced a serious hygiene issue.

We were initially placed in Room 201, next to the elevator. While waiting for a room change due to noise, I noticed insects on the bed. We were then moved to Room 207.

At approximately 3am, I woke up with insects crawling over me. Upon inspection, it was clear the room was infested with bed bugs, visible on the mattress and bedding. We were moved again, this time to Room 515, as it was the middle of the night.

As a result of the exposure, I sustained multiple bed bug bites and developed a severe allergic reaction, requiring medical treatment with cortisone and antihistamines.

When we asked hotel staff whether other guests had complained, we were told the situation was “complicated” and that there had previously been an issue on the second floor, which they said had been “sorted”. This suggests prior awareness of pest problems.

This was not an isolated issue and raises serious concerns about hygiene, pest control, and guest safety. The incident has been reported through Booking.com and to the relevant tourism authorities.

I am sharing this to ensure transparency and to protect future guests.
