TIMKO - Avoid them and save your money

Ordered 12mm bungee rope from Timko, bought 16 metres, approximately £38,it arrived in reasonable time, but when I asked them how I could source the bungee cord hooks, to go with the cord, they’ve blanked me. The silence has been deafening. I have emailed them a number of times, without response, so struggling to find 12mm hooks. AVOID this company, going to have to write it off as a bad experience.

Splice, don't cable tie! Unimpressed customer.

I don’t like leaving negative reviews, but sometimes you just have no choice.

I placed an order for 30 metres of 10 mm anchor rope with a thimble spliced at one end on Thursday (17/7) lunchtime. First the good points: Delivery was extremely fast; the order arrived on Saturday.

I am also pleased with the rope itself, but that is where the good points end.
The rope arrived with cable ties around the thimble, which I removed, assuming that they had been put on just to keep everything in place during the splicing. I've had many ropes with spliced thimbles in the past and have never received one held together with cable ties.
When I checked the splicing I saw that the thimble was very loose, so loose that I could easily fit a finger between the thimble and rope. In fact the thimble came out of the rope loop altogether when I was checking the length of the rope. It was obvious at this point that the cable ties were in fact doing the job of holding the rope and thimble together, rather than the rope hugging the thimble snugly, as should have been the case.

As the rope was clearly not fit for purpose I contacted the seller and (politely) explained the situation. I sent 2 photos of the thimble (obviously loosely) within the loop, and another of the thimble sitting next to the rope loop. In my email I asked how we should proceed.

I obviously didn't expect a reply over the weekend (I sent it on Saturday,) but I was very impressed to receive a reply at 9.07 am on Monday.
The seller asked if there had been zip ties connecting the thimble to the rope, and if there had, did I remove them?
This was the point where I stopped being impressed.

At 9.40 am I replied that yes, there were 3 cable ties which I removed, as I assumed they had been put on just to hold everything together while it was being spliced. I mentioned that I have had many ropes with spliced thimbles in the past and none have ever been held together by cable ties. I pointed out that there were no cable ties in the product photos on his website.
I reiterated, how do we proceed?

At 11.50 am I emailed again, as I now seemed to be experiencing 'radio silence'! I apologised for my impatience, asked if he could please let me know what's happening, (as I need the rope soon.) I pointed out that the rope was not fit for purpose and suggested he might have another look at the photos l'd sent. I said that If he was in any doubt he could do an internet search on spliced thimbles and he would see that there was not a single cable tie in sight! I suggested that perhaps a small partial refund may be in order to cover the cost of getting the rope respliced locally, and could he please let me know how he was going to resolve this. I ended my message by requesting that he please email me whatever he decides, even if he wasn't going to do anything, which I think was very reasonable of me since I was virtually giving him an 'out’. At this point just an email saying sorry for the inconvenience would have gone a long way!

It has now been 24 hours since I last emailed him and I've still had no response, and I think it's obvious I'm not going to get one. It's bad enough getting mediocre splicing workmanship, but I find it incredible that some companies think it makes good business sense to just ignore you when you have an issue, (that is their fault.) It’s short sighted as guess who I won’t be buying rope from in the future?! Anyone can pack an item and post it out; the acid test for me is how a company deals with an unhappy customer. Suffice to say this company have absolutely failed that test. I do not, and will not recommend them to anyone, and I will never be buying anything from them again.

6 months ago bought a timkos changing…

6 months ago bought a timkos changing mat. It has only been used 3-4 times as it was for my granddaughter and only used in my house. I was very pleased with the product initially however the first time I took the cover of to wash it the zip broke. It is a long zip and it does not have any stops at the top or bottom so the fastner just came off and it has proved impossible to mend. It's a shame as the cover itself is lovely material. I have looked to just replace the cover but there are no options. Obviously very disappointed without the cover the changer is very slippy as the mat is not non slip. Is there any way to get a replacement over as the mat is unusable.

Have purchased various ropes from this…

Have purchased various ropes from this company over several years and they have all been excellent.
They have a great range, useful information and have always been quick and reliable in fulfilling orders.
Their website includes a useful section on knots.

The only minus I can think of is that you can't login to their site and see past orders, nor do they email you an invoice or detail of the order for your records - so it is good to take a screenshot of it at the time.

I was pleased to notice that the last polypropylene rope I bought from them was made in Britain - and hope that applies to the entire range.

Sent wrong product, not corrected after several weeks

Summary: I was sent the wrong product, but the supplier keeps brushing me off (three times so far) saying that I have the right one. They provided no information to help me verify the product, so eventually I got the advice of a local boat-builder. The rope is the wrong diameter and the wrong material.

I ordered a 220m coil 16mm polyester 3-strand rope (£337 incl. VAT and delivery, 17/12/2019) which is listed as weighing 45Kg on their website. Other suppliers and manufacturing data list 43-45Kg. Polyester is significantly heavier than nylon (1.38 specific gravity versus 1.14 for nylon) and is more expensive. 220m 16mm nylon is only about 32Kg. I don't want nylon, as I have nylon already, and it tends to lift easily in strong tides.

There was no label on the rope, but the delivery ticket said 30Kg. I weighed the coil on scales and it was only 35Kg, but of course the scales could be inaccurate. I got back to Timko and they said it was the right coil and the label sometimes falls off.

There was no information from them how to verify that I have the correct product. I now know that if they had given me the coil dimensions (coil height, outer and inner diameter), the issue could have been cleared up immediately. The difference in weight between polyester and nylon allows no mistaking 32Kg vs 45Kg, assuming the correct rope length and diameter.

Next I found someone to weigh the coil in case my scales were inaccurate, but the result was nearly the same (about 0.5 Kg lower), so 35Kg maximum. I got back to Timko and they repeated that it was the right rope, and as for the delivery ticket, sometimes the wrong weight is put in.

They said the weight difference between 45Kg (their website) and 35Kg (my measurement) was due to manufacturing tolerances and that I shouldn't worry about it. I doubt anyone wants to buy rope where you get nearly one third less rope than indicated for the product on their own website. Try writing 35-45Kg for the product and see how many buyers you get.

Next I took the rope to a boat-builder of 40 years experience in the industry. It turns out it is 18mm rope not 16mm. I don't want to open the coil so when I measured across 5 loops of rope in the coil the estimated diameter is lower than it should be due to the turns being a little interleaved. My boat builder friend released enough length at the end to measure it properly and he says it is 18mm rope and it is nylon. If it was 220m 18mm polyester it would weigh 57Kg, so the rope cannot possibly be polyester, or else the coil is quite a bit shorter than 220m.

I sent this information to Timko, but I have no reply after a week.

This all takes time. I would sooner drive to the other end of the country to collect the right product in person than go through this again.

It is reasonable, given the lack of information from their end to help me, and the time and effort I have put in to identify the rope, that I should get a full refund including all carriage charges.

The coil is no use for my purposes, so I have to keep going.

I would not use this company again - sent wrong product, no help, not corrected after several weeks.
