Our First Salsa Experience

My girlfriend booked a surprise date for us to do salsa lessons, and without any prior knowledge of what we were about to do, it’s safe to say I wasn’t prepared. It was our first time ever salsa dancing and we had a great time. As beginners, our instructor Virginia made us feel very comfortable. We had lots of fun, plenty of dancing and laughter which we have to give again, give credit to our teacher Virginia for. We even stayed for Bachata lessons! Safe to say, we will be back for more soon. Tia and Aji x

I love Salsa and Salsateca

I decided to learn Salsa early last year and came across Salsateca in Bromley. In my very first class I fell in love with Salsa. I hardly miss a lesson. The instructors are so talented and the students are so friendly and warm. Even if you attend on your own, you will be made to feel welcome.

A great way to dive into Salsa

I'm writing from the perspective of a beginner that has taken four Salsa and Bachata classes in Warren Street.

I'd say it's a great place if you want to dive straight into the action and build up confidence in an iterative way. The beginner classes always start with the basics, but the instructor manages to throw in something fresh and challenging each time. The daily lessons are delivered in a way that allows people to join from any session without prior experience, so it might not be the best fit for people looking for a linear curriculum with a rigid structure. That said, I've enjoyed it so far even though I'm generally a methodical person.

The instructor can be quite direct in their feedback, but it's clear that they care about your progression. It also helps that the fellow dancers support each other with encouragement and advice. Everyone is there to learn and have fun, so it's a great way to end the day after a long day at work.

No more blue Monday since i joined Salsateca!
Love their salsa & bachata classes! The atmosphere is super friendly and instructors -at any level- give you the right attentions to improve!
I am now in the improvers level and looking forward to get better and better.
I also met lots of people which was one of the reason why I joined!

Fun and friendly salsa classes

Very welcoming, sympathetic and warm teachers who are genuinely passionate about what they do. Fun and friendly classes for all levels with a great vibe where you learn quickly (even if you are a terrible dancer like me).. I’ve been doing these for several weeks, having started as an absolute beginner and am now hooked.

Great teachers and vibes

I've been learning salsa (crossbody) & bachata with salsateca for about 4-5 months now. The teachers are great and bring a great energy from the start with a fun warm up. The socials after the classes are a great opportunity to practice with other students and also the teachers are happy to give useful tips and feedback.

Literally Life Changing (If You Stick With It)

I've been going to Salsateca classes all over the city for 10 months now, and they have literally changed my life.

I moved back to London with no friends, no community, and zero dance skill. In attending the classes, I've now found/developed all three. By going to 3-4 classes per week, I've gone from complete beginner with no appreciable dance experience to (relatively) comfortable intermediate.

It's not been an easy process, and sometimes a given class or warmup feels too much.

But that's kind of the point.

Learning any new skill is an inherently uncomfortable process, and there have been many classes where I've felt completely out of my depth, or not understood the purpose of what I'm doing. But I've trusted the process, and the instructors, and I'm glad I have.

Every one of the instructors is fantastic, and each has their own distinct style.

They're knowledgeable, patient, and will test you.

That testing is not always a "pleasant" experience. There have been many occasions where I've wanted to walk away in frustration. But if you're looking to learn and develop the skill of dancing, it's necessary.

This has meant that I've also learnt a huge amount about myself at the same time as learning to dance.

I'm more comfortable in my own skin, confident in my ability to do hard things, and better able to regulate my own emotional state when I'm struggling.

Those things alone are worth the price of admission, never mind the fact a whole new world of self expression is now available to me.

Cuban salsa. Son. Cha cha. Rumba. Cross body. Bachata moderna. Sensual. Dominican.

I can now do (with massively varying degrees of skill) all of these, and as a white guy from a non musical middle class background, that's something I never thought would be possible for someone like me.

To that end I can't recommend the classes enough.

Just go in with an open mind and the understanding that it's going to be hard, and that there's something amazing on the other side of the hard bit.

Not for true beginners

I went to the Waterloo centre for my first class which was billed as Beginners-Improvers, thinking that they would accommodate beginners. Turned out everyone else there was clearly at a higher level and there was no basic instruction for a true beginner. I was also expecting some instruction in basic salsa steps (given that it was billed as a salsa class) but the instructor immediately went into a cha-cha and then into partners, with way too much assumed knowledge. I was told that the class would split after an hour into higher and lower levels but I didn't fancy waiting that long when the moves were way above my level. I'd strongly advise avoiding classes labelled Beginner-Improver if you're a real beginner and look for something for Absolute Beginners if you need to build your confidence and to avoid getting frustrated and demotivated. Not a great experience!

I've been going to salsateca for over a year now. I can honestly say it's the most joyful part of my week. The staff and teachers are all lovely and super welcoming. The dance steps are easy to get but hard to master which means there's always more to learn. Sometimes the complicated steps are a bit beyond me, but so long as you keep to the beat and keep smiling, it's all good. The people are friendly and the dancing feels great when you get into the groove. I fully recommend!

Amazing Salsa and Bachata Classes

My partner and I went together to Salsateca in Elephant and Castle a few times and have really loved it. Our beginner level was taught by Virginia who is an amazing dancer and teacher. We love that you get to learn both salsa and bachata, and you can stay dancing and practicing afterwards which is really helpful. We also contacted them for private lessons for the first dance at our wedding, and Virginia helped us put something great together. We just had our wedding and our first dance was a success! We really enjoyed the lessons and knowing that we can now use the steps and moves whenever we are dancing.

Nice salsa experience due to quality of teachers, students and class frequency

Learning salsa at salsateca has been a really nice experience. This is because of the quality of teachers, the students as well as class frequency.

General atmosphere in the classes is quite chill, with teachers willing to put in an effort to see you improve your techniques. Additionally, as you dance with more experienced students at times, they are able to help you out as well, especially when it comes to leading. This creates an amazing environment to learn this dance.

Dance classes are held everyday, and you can pick and choose which classes you can come. This ensures that during my busy weeks when I am unable to attend a class, I compensate it by attending 2 classes.

Overall, an amazing environment to dance, learn and grow. Really like it here.
