Do not recommend Schmiedmann

I had a very disappointing experience with Schmiedmann. I purchased both upper and lower radiator shutters from them, expecting decent quality given how they present their products. Unfortunately, both parts failed after just 3 months of normal use, which is completely unacceptable for components like these.

What makes this worse is that the parts were sold as OE (Original Equipment), but they were clearly not Genuine BMW parts, even though I paid for Genuine ones. There’s a big difference, and it feels misleading to market them in a way that suggests they are equivalent to genuine components when they clearly are not.

When I reached out about the issue, there was zero accountability/communication. No meaningful support, no proper resolution—just a complete lack of responsibility for what they sold. That kind of customer service is frustrating and reflects poorly on the company.

Based on my experience, I would not recommend Schmiedmann at all. Be very cautious when purchasing from them, as the quality may not match expectations and you may not get any support if something goes wrong.

The parts we sold you are original BMW parts. There is a stamp on the wrapping telling this.

Customer service was great

Customer service was great. I had a question regarding a part for our BMW and I tried to dig up some information myself regarding the part I was looking for, but I was not satisfied. My Experience with Schmiedmann & Quaife…

My Experience with Schmiedmann & Quaife LSD (BMW M235i – Ohio, USA)

Three months ago I ordered a Quaife QDF17N LSD for my 2016 BMW M235i from Schmiedmann in Denmark.
I paid $1,400 for the differential.

As many BMW owners know, the OEM ring gear on the M235i is welded to the carrier and must be machined off and transferred to the Quaife unit. I followed the official instructions exactly and had a machine shop properly machine and fit the ring gear.

When we attempted installation, we immediately ran into a serious issue:

• The left-side bearing would not seat fully
• The carrier measured approximately 0.3–0.5mm taller
• The diff would not sit correctly in the housing

I documented everything:
• Measurements
• Photos
• Bearing/shim verification
• Part number confirmation (7599411 stamped)
• Bearing journal measurement (~6.063” per spec)

Schmiedmann insisted the product could not be wrong and suggested installation error.

For context: I have 20 years of mechanical experience.

To eliminate doubt, I sent the entire differential to a BMW-certified shop here in Ohio.

They had the exact same issue.

Schmiedmann’s position remained:
If I believed there was a defect, I could ship it back to Europe at my expense (around $600+ shipping), and only if they later approved it would anything be considered.



The Fix

The BMW shop suggested installing a RacingDiff BMW backlash adjustment snap clips kit.

I purchased:
• Snap clips kit – $390
• Assembly labor – $480

After installing the kit, the differential seated correctly.
Backlash was properly measured and confirmed.
I’ve driven 1,500+ miles with zero issues.

The diff now works perfectly.

This means additional compensation was required that was never disclosed on the product page. It is advertised as a direct-fit replacement.

Nowhere does it state that an additional $400 kit may be required.



Request for Compensation

I asked Schmiedmann only to reimburse the $390 snap clips kit (I did NOT request the $480 labor).

They refused, stating they are “only the seller” and cannot cover additional expenses.



Warranty Concern

After I informed them that I would be sharing my experience publicly, I was told that because the repair was done without their approval, my warranty may be revoked.

To be clear:

• I attempted to resolve this directly with them for months
• I provided documentation and measurements
• A BMW-certified shop confirmed the issue
• Shipping it overseas was financially unreasonable

The only way to make the differential usable was to purchase the adjustment kit.

Now I’m being told that fixing the issue locally — after they declined responsibility — may void my warranty.



Why I’m Sharing This

This is not about attacking a company.

It’s about transparency and accountability.

If a product sometimes requires additional components to function properly, that should be clearly stated before purchase.

Instead, I experienced:
• Months of delay
• Nearly $900 in additional expense
• Repeated suggestions that I installed it incorrectly
• Refusal to assist beyond “ship it back at your cost”
• And now possible warranty revocation for making it work

The differential performs great now.

But the customer service experience was extremely disappointing.

BMW owners deserve full transparency before spending $1,400+ on drivetrain components.

First and foremost, we are pleased to hear that your Quaife differential is now installed correctly and performing well. We fully understand how frustrating and time-consuming installation complications can be, especially when additional parts and costs become necessary.

At Schmiedmann, we act as an authorized distributor of Quaife products. These differentials are manufactured by Quaife Engineering and supplied as vehicle-specific performance upgrades. While they are designed to fit the intended applications, installation tolerances, carrier housings, ring gear transfer machining, shim stacks, and bearing seating can vary slightly between individual vehicles and machining processes. For this reason, final fitment and adjustment procedures may sometimes require additional setup components or adjustments, which are part of the professional installation process rather than the differential unit itself.

When a potential defect is suspected, the standard procedure—both from our side and from the manufacturer—is to inspect the component physically. This requires returning the unit so it can be evaluated and verified under warranty conditions. We fully understand that international shipping can be costly, but this process is necessary to determine whether a manufacturing defect is present and to authorize any compensation or replacement through the manufacturer.

Because the differential was modified and finalized locally using additional components and without manufacturer inspection or approval, we are unfortunately unable to retroactively confirm or classify the original condition of the unit under warranty guidelines. This is not intended as a penalty, but rather reflects the standard requirements set by the manufacturer to ensure fair and consistent warranty handling.

We regret that this situation did not meet your expectations, particularly regarding the time involved and the additional costs you incurred. Your feedback regarding clearer communication about installation variables is valuable, and we will review how product information can be presented even more clearly to help customers and installers prepare appropriately.

Very rough and hard to deal with guys

First thing very rough and hard to deal with this guys. Do not recommend. Schmiedmann RHS manifold exhaust including sports catalic converter not fit correctly. Need to be modified to fit in to my 330ci RHS. Speed extra time and money to be 100%

Ordered Euro spec tail lights for my…

Ordered Euro spec tail lights for my E36 in the US on April 25th. Today, almost a month later, I get an email saying I need to pay more for shipping because their site is incomplete and didn't calculate the shipping costs correctly at check out. On top of that, they say I'm being charged another fee for using a Visa card but don't give any other option for payment. IF they screwed up, they need to eat it. Doubt I'll order from them again.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience you had.
But we clearly state on our website that it can happen that freight charges can be higher than first quoted and expected.
In these rare cases you are of course completely free to cancel your order and get your payment back.
How can this be unfair?
BMW doesn´t provide any of their parts with measures so we have to manually measure and weigh all parts and add it to our database.
But as said in rare cases like yours we unfortunately don´t have the correct measurements so our freight quote isn´t correct – if that´s the case we will ask the customer if he wants to pay the additional freight costs or cancel the order and get his payment back. Since we guarentee our customers the world lowest prices on BMW & MINI parts there is no space in our profit to take part in the freight costs.

Once again sorry for the inconvenience and I hope for your understanding.

Overrated BMW company name

I have received reply for my order since month ago , where said that it was canceled.
This is no professional way to do , for such a great named company.

I am really sorry that BMW isn´t able to deliver the BMW E39 M5 doorsill you ordered at the moment. Actually we normally keep these in stock to prevent to get in a situation where we can´t deliver. But we have 2 pcs in backorder from BMW for months now and the latest message we got from BMW was "no delivery time for this item" so we had to cancel your order unfortunately )-: But we hope for your understanding that there is nothing we want more than supply you the part you ordered - but if BMW can´t deliver there is nothing we can do. We hope you will reconsider the rating you gave us based on this. On our website we have a stockagent if you activate that function you will be automatically notified once BMW can supply and we got them in stock again.

Ordered and paid for 29 BMW parts on the 30th November, heard nothing for 7 weeks, emailed to find out the status of of order to be informed they had not actioned it. This is the third order placed with Schmiedmann and the third time they have let me down! I’m amazed they are still in business. Zero proactive customer service, avoid this company

Order ID 3303402 Shockingly Poor service

Ordered and paid for BMW parts on the 25/11/22 (order id 3303402) just received a notification today 19/01/23 (8 weeks later) to say the parts are not available.Whilst I understand parts are sometimes unavailable, for it to take 8 weeks to inform a customer is shockingly poor customer service.
