Thinking of Joining Serco in Dumfries

Thinking of Joining Serco in Dumfries? Here’s a Survival Guide!

I started as a Contract Administrator at Serco a few months ago, and what an experience. From day one, I was treated to a thrilling week of absolutely nothing. No training, no tasks, just me, a chair, and the growing realisation that I had made a mistake. Meanwhile, I listened to someone puffing on an inhaler like it was a vape stick, who later handed in a sick note and went on a generous holiday. Then there was the other Administrator, who seemed to be on a daily mission to manipulate and report back to management behind everyone’s back. By the way, everyone knows she does it.

Let’s start with the Project Management team, a masterclass in how to wing it. Most had only been there for two years, which is impressive given that the contract had been running for seven. Why did the previous staff leave? Well, that remains one of those great workplace mysteries, right up there with why do I clock in and out when they just pay you anyway if you work in the office and it has no inpact on your pay? and does anyone in Project Management actually know what they're doing?

The real brains of the operation are the BSAs, techs, sparks, and joiners, some of whom actually know what they’re doing. They spent a lot of time laughing at the management decisions that came out of a pointless morning meeting. The Project Management team thought they were running the show. In reality, they couldn’t run a bath and had little understanding of the industry they work in.

You will receive no training and minimal support. However, if you so much as misspell a word, fear not the office grammar police (a.k.a. the other Administrator) will run off to report you to the Performance Manager.

So, what’s the best part of the job..... Well that has to be the sick leave system. Some employees who struggled to do their jobs simply went off sick. I mean, why not take six months off with full pay? I suspect they’d all be back in a week with no illness if their payments stopped, funny how that works.

They ignore your suggestions and then act surprised when things go wrong. Honestly, I’m shocked they still have this contract. If taxpayers money were set on fire, it might be a more efficient use of funds, perhaps even better than the hospital’s heating system, which people constantly complain about because it’s too cold.

Not a local? Then look elsewhere.

Worked at Kyle of Lochalsh for six months.
Very high turnover of staff, especially engineers and deck officers due to poor onboard conditions, old vessels, poor shore management, poor pay and leave ratio and generally unwelcoming locals.
Always seem to be advertising the same jobs which should tell you to avoid at all costs

Do Not Apply for a Serco position!

I recently applied for a customer service position with Serco related to the NDIS, and I must say, my experience has been incredibly disappointing. I had to miss the second assessment due to a serious family emergency—specifically, I’ve been providing support for a family friend who is battling stage 4 cancer, which has left him unable to move on one side of his body.
I promptly reached out to Serco to explain my situation, believing that a company hiring for roles that require empathy would understand. However, despite my attempts to communicate and the urgency of my circumstances, I have yet to receive any acknowledgment or response a fortnight ago. This lack of communication speaks volumes about the company's values.
It's ironic that they claim to be seeking empathetic employees when they fail to demonstrate any empathy themselves. The complete absence of support or even a simple acknowledgment from Serco only reaffirms their reputation, which I’ve seen reflected in other reviews. It’s troubling to see that not only did I feel disregarded, but it appears that many others have faced similar issues while working with or applying to this company.
Overall, my experience with Serco has left a lasting negative impression. If they can't show compassion to candidates during difficult times, it makes me question the type of work environment they create for their employees. Based on what I've experienced and read, I would strongly advise others to think twice before engaging with this company.

Servo from a point of view of waste…

Servo from a point of view of waste Refuge, Is an absolute disgrace, They have a council contract, which they don’t even live up to expectation, The streets are messy the bins are always full, The dust cost to go round and do the houses. They don’t even do them properly. They missed most of the time.

Always getting told the same old thing they haven’t got time to do all the rounds that’s funny cause I see a lot of of them sat and lay by doing nothing but eating and being on their phones,

Their employment is ridiculous. All they seem to do is employ people that don’t speak English or know what they’re supposed to be doing. They just employ any old rubbish to fill the hole.

It’s An absolute disgrace they’re just a money grabbing

Bad training, Poor management, No support

Serco Belfast/ NI Direct / Customer Service Advisor

My line manager: My experience was not positive. She never came to talk to us, never introduced herself, never opened her mouth to give us support. Never gave me feedback on my work, never explained anything, The only thing she knows how to do is walk around the office with a sullen face. It's unbelievable the way she dresses, gym clothes and tracksuits, she doesn't convey confidence, she sits at the table and puts her feet up as if she were at home, she has no respect for the work environment. It's unbelievable how Serco allows this attitude with a person who holds the position of manager.

About the work:
Low moral inadequate management, no direction , Training wasn't the best, didn't get enough time to learn everything and didn't get shown how everything worked, Training was rushed!! They Expect you to learn a lot in a short space of time, managers wear tracksuits and gym clothes, 30 min lunch means you dont have time enough of heating your food in the microwave, You will answer calls from 70+ work lines business, The documentation to support you in your work day is completely messy and it is difficult to find information, The coaches laugh and make fun of you when you ask a question, to many tech issues while working, There is no place to park your car and you are forced to pay for a daily parking fee of 8 pounds.

London

London: Unprofessional, inexperienced Base & Court Managers 'manage' over people who's role they are incapable of doing themselves ...They're people who've been promoted well above their capabilities.
Due to incompetence and an inability to 'manage', many Serco managers resort to being disingenuous and will do or say anything to save their own backsides ...work environments are toxic.
Endless Disciplines & Appeals are not impartial ...these meetings are carried out by managers covering for one another ...dishonest, unfair and with pre-determined outcomes.
The bar to become a Serco manager is extremely low. Many are guilty of routine gross misconduct, conduct they accuse others of, leading to endless undeserved disciplines & dismissals.
The organisation cannot retain decent staff, this is again, due to weak management and has lead to the current low morale along with high levels of sickness and resignation.
AVOID Prisoner Custody Officer or Court Staff roles In fact, avoid Serco entirely.

they just like a nice fat government contract

the company is not interested in improving, just in maximizing profits.
they run the catering at Southampton General hospital where i have been since 19th dec 24. missing (a la carte) menus, missing dishes, every dish has an excess of carbs (dangerous for type-2 diabetics), one dish i ordered was cauliflour cheese, brocolli and potato but all i got was a child's portion of cauliflour cheese. hot soup served in cold bowls.
terminate the serco contract, they can't do the job.

White SERCO van BX20DDE. I was cycling on Argyle Road Ealing about 13.20. The van passed me very close at speed, well above speed limit which is 20mph. Please send this driver on a road safety course before he/she kills someone.

I was given a disability DWP assessment…

I was given a disability DWP assessment over the phone from an alleged Health Professional working for this company. I was given no appointment they just rang me out of the blue giving me no time to have a support worker with me. I was too scared to refuse. I have a serious Phychiatric Condition which has a high mortality rate and have just had a Mental Health crisis. They have lied on the assessment ,and because I did not have support with me they are saying this shows my condition has improved. Though I had no choice. They are merciless and cruel. Vunerable people will end up dying from this bullying behaviour.

I totally agree with Kelly

I totally agree with Kelly. After 2 years, my face did not fit with the very much younger staff. A witch hunt with fabricated stories & utter lies about me led to me losing my job. I was not given a chance to defend myself & my appeal was a joke. I did nothing wrong. Yes, the gross misconduct of other employees is totally glossed over. Once they decide to get rid of you, the decision is already made, even by upper management. I was warned not to transfer to this particular court due to it being toxic, but I thought I would make up my own mind. I so wish I had listened! I'm 59 years old & have never been treated like this my whole life! I have always been valued by my employers; not serco though. This is not sour grapes; I said at my appeal that if it was overturned that I would resign. I now have "gross misconduct" on my work record for something I did not do. For your own sanity, stay away.
