On 11.05.2026, when I picked up my rental vehicle from Sixt Düsseldorf airport office, I was informed that my booked VW Passat had been “upgraded” to a VW Tiguan. However, despite being presented as an upgrade, the vehicle provided was in fact cheaper and below the category and comfort level of the car I originally rented.

I find it unacceptable that this situation was presented to me as a benefit while it was clearly not an actual upgrade.

In addition to this, you had previously promised me a 15% discount due to my earlier negative experience with Sixt, yet this discount was never applied.

Furthermore, despite my previous attempts to contact Sixt headquarters regarding this matter, I have not received any proper response.

At this stage, I can clearly say that my experience with Sixt has been extremely disappointing. Unless this matter is resolved properly and professionally, I will not only share my experience on Trustpilot and other public review platforms, but I will also consider pursuing the matter through legal channels if necessary.

Kind regards,
Berktuğ Akbulut

stay away...

just received a bill for 3400 CHF for damage caused by rental car company negligence to personal safety....

My family (two adults and two children) rented a vehicle from Sixt Zurich Airport location from February 13 to February 22, 2026. The reservation was prepaid on January 15, 2026 and included a VW Passat wagon and a set of snow chains.

Upon arrival on February 13, we were informed that our reserved vehicle was no longer available because “cars are not held more than two hours.” After discussion, we were provided with a different, larger vehicle at the same rate. We informed your representative that we were traveling to Chamonix and Zermatt for a ski trip with children.

At the time of departure, we were given a set of snow chains, which the representative stated were “from another car.” No verification was conducted to ensure compatibility with the vehicle provided to us.

During heavy snowfall on a steep mountain road near our hotel in Chamonix, it became necessary to install the snow chains. After carefully following the instructions, it became apparent that the chains were oversized and did not properly fit the tires. Despite repeated attempts to secure them, they remained loose.
We were stopped on a steep mountain road with no cellular reception, limited visibility, and increasing traffic pressure. The situation became hazardous. Two bystanders eventually assisted and confirmed that the chains were too large for the wheels. With difficulty, we managed to proceed slowly to the hotel. The chain repeatedly loosened during the ascent.

We have now been notified of a scratch on the right front rim, allegedly caused during the rental period. Based on the circumstances described above, this damage is directly attributable to the improperly sized snow chains supplied by SIXT staff.

This situation arose due to negligence in providing incompatible safety equipment. Snow chains are a CRITICAl safety item in alpine conditions. Providing incorrect equipment placed my family inANSOLUTLY UNNECESSARY DANGER.

Upon my complain, they reversed snow chain charges from the original rental bill, but issued a car damage invoice to pay CHF3400 CHF including rim damage... absurd injustice and impunity... it should not be like this... My wife and children still suffer from anxiety episodes related to this incident and our vacation was simply ruined by SIXT safety negligence... they do not care about it...

I'm contacting consumer protection organizations, and individuals in Swizeland, SIXT CEOs in Germany and Swizeland as well as my insurance company. I'm a driver with 30+ clean record driving experience in Europe and North America... Instead of me and my family it can be a single mom with two kids or an eldetly person.... it does not take much a tragedy to happen... but SIXT not thinking this way.... they are "not aware" about heavy snowfalls and number of tragic accidents in Alps this winter... SiXT car rentals invested in bright clean offices, nice expensive cars, state of art AI scanners to boost profits, but failed miserably on elementary due diligence procedures and customer safety... profit first...

Do not come even CLOSE to SiXT car rentals.... any body who wants to get details and help me to exposure unsafe car rental parctices from this SiXt car rental and share my experience in media - more than welcome contact me privately...

Fast and easy customer service

The customer service was very easy to communicate with and find a vehicle that suited my needs. They made it easy to narrow down a vehicle and was very affordable. They are informative on explaining charges and what will be the final cost, they share all the information required. Finding the vehicle is simple. The overall process with them has been fantastic.

Completely unjustified €400 fine

I received a €400 fine from SIXT Share for a parking violation that occurred several days after I had ended my rental, and that I could not possibly have committed. I returned the vehicle properly at a location about 10 km away from where it was later found and towed, so the car must have been moved after my rental. All of this is clearly documented in the app and in my receipts. Despite Sixt having full access to GPS data and detailed rental records, I was still held responsible.

When I called customer service, I was told that the location mentioned in the police report was probably the destination the car was towed to. However, the report explicitly states that it is the location where the car was found, and that location is in the absolute center of Munich, which makes their explanation even more ridiculous.

It is hard to believe this could be a simple oversight—unless fines are being issued automatically to recent renters, perhaps even to multiple people for the same incident, in the hope that one (or more) of them will pay without question. This raises serious concerns about how SIXT handles accountability and treats its customers. I filed a dispute, but the fact that I even need to do this is disgraceful.

I'm really disappointed and angry…

I'm really disappointed and angry because first I was enrolled in a SIXT SHARE BLACK campaign where in a very small letter it was written that SIXT charges 89 eur for nothing

SIXT charged me 3 days after the ride with 89 eur and I spent some time to understand what it is about

After that they gave me 89 EUR voucher for 1 ride with SIXT SHARE where the average price is only 6-10 EUR, so the remaining amount is gone and SIXT profit now

THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE

SIXT ref#RA 9408329505

Where do I start?
I have to share this story as it is pretty incredible.
On 22/06/2019 I was driving in a SIXT hire car from Geneva to Bergamo in Italy. A landslide caused the complete closure of the Autostrada and we were directed off the Autostrada by the Italian police at Pont-St.Martin, where the toll booths were raised and we were waved through to then spend 6 hours bumper to bumper on side roads getting to Bergamo.
3 years later, yes, 3 years, I received a debit on my American Express card for $148.82 on 18-04-22 for as it turns out, a fine from the Italian toll road company, NIVI, for not paying the toll, who had sent the fine to SIXT in Germany, who then paid it with out asking me, and added a service fee of $30.
I complained and explained immediately about it, and as to why they had my credit card details still after 3 years, but they did not answer. They told me that I had to get in contact with the toll road company NIVI, and get them to reimburse SIXT who would then reimburse me.
Many months of correspondence occurred and eventually NIVI agreed that I should at best have paid only $24.80, which was the toll amount up to where we were directed off the Autostrada. I paid that amount to them, and then asked them to reimburse SIXT.
They said that they could see my payment now, but could not see the $117 amount which SIXT claimed they had paid for me.
Requests to SIXT to reconfirm the amount paid to NIVI went unanswered, instead SIXT debited my card a second time for $148.82 on 30-08-22!!!
I immediately sent emails to SIXT, and have been sending them ever since, but get no answer from SIXT at all. Reminder after reminder!
So I should have paid at best nothing, as I did nothing wrong, and only followed the directions from the Italian police, but at worst I had to pay $24.80, which I did, but I also paid involuntarily $148.82 twice to SIXT, so a total of $297.64, which they took from my credit card incorrectly after 3 years.
They are criminally negligent, at best, and certifiably
breaking German Law by keeping customer credit card details on their files some 3 years later.
They are unresponsive to customer requests and needs and are a disgrace to the rental car industry.
Avoid at all costs.

Inconsiderate policy - Updated

After my complaint here, they withdraw the fee. I'm keeping the evaluation in order to help other customers but I raised the rating.

----
Terrible customer service and policy for Sixt Share. I parked a shared car on a valid area, but unfortunately I didn't noticed that on the following day the car couldn't remain there. I got a €15 fine, what is fine, but Sixt charged me EXTRA € 29 for "administration fee. € 29 just to send me an email to pay a fine is outrageous. I asked them to withdraw this fee, since it was a very cheap traffic offence, but they didn't agee.
Be careful, better avoid Sixt Share and go with Miles, WeShare or ShareNow. They at least will charge you less, € 20.

Unprofessional Company

I have been a user of Sixt Share for quite a while and always have been happy with their general service. Up until now.

Someone left a scratches in the paint of one of the cars I rented. Of course I look at the cars before driving if there are any major damages but honestly who looks up every scratch?!?!

Just because I did not report one tiny scratch that definitely has been there before my drive, Sixt now made me pay about 300€ for a damage I did not commit just because the person responsible did not report it.

@ SIXT: You should definitely overthink this kind of system.

Letting random people pay for others mistakes is unprofessional and wrong.

Do not book with Sixt Share under any…

Do not book with Sixt Share under any circumstances. Sixt Share tried to attach damages to my name again and again and I did not cause it. The same happened to some of my colleagues multiple times.

After I tried to solve everything on a legal basis I am still in negotiations 3 months later.
Presumably the very low Sixt Share fees compared to the competition should be compensated with this kind of actions.

It is an absolute catastrophe and can no longer be recommended. I have now finally logged off and after several reminders they eventually agreed to delete my personal data.

Sixt Share App in Germany

Used The Sixt Share App in Germany - had previously been happy, but - CAREFUL! the advertised daily cap is misleading!

Also terrible customer service - told me to check the website T&Cs again (buried in small print within the 3rd page you have to click links to arrive at).

THEN just stopped replying to my emails where I asked them to rectify the clarity of their website.

It's clearly stated what the maximum daily limit is (e.g. in my case €59). But if you click e.g. the 6 hour package it's not as you would expect that the price would be capped at the daily maximum if we went over 6 hours.
You end up paying the hourly amount PLUS the daily cap, so I've now ended up with almost double the price of the daily cap - I would have made a very different choice if the pricing were clearly stated.

Actively misleading customers and unfairly drawing people in on the app with a low headline price on the app, but detailed and complex T&Cs hidden in the depths of the website.

I read the pricing in detail on the app before hiring, but in order to find the small print regarding the tariff pricing on the website you have to read two full pages of details & click on multiple links within these pages.

This is very poor treatment of your customers & I will be reluctant to use your services in the future given this treatment.

I have been using Sixt Share

I have been using Sixt Share - the car sharing app in Germany. In practice, their cars are cheap and of good standard.

But be aware of the SCAM! They randomly accuse you of "creating a scratch" or "damage" during your short rental, which supposedly the next customer has reported. They have no evidence but send you an invoice for around €900, attach a bill of the car repair and photos of the car (from a random date / place) and tell you to pay. They threaten to take you to court to scare customers into paying. Several people have reported this issue and most of us have been accused for the same 'damage' (scratch to the rims and tires and for more or less the same amount! - that's convenient isn't it?!). When you tell them it wasn't you, they offer a 'compromise' by reducing the fee you're supposed to pay them. If it wasn't you, do NOT PAY ANYTHING! They have no legal standing and are just trying their luck to make money off innocent customers. Their customer service is also TERRIBLE. I emailed them about the issue 5 months ago, telling them it wasn't me and got no reply but just an invoice sent to me.

If it had been me, I would have been happy to let my insurance pay but it wasn't. They have no proof and I'm happy to take them to court. I'm writing this review to inform others - DO NOT FALL FOR THEIR SCAM OF PAYING FEES FOR SOMETHING YOU DID NOT DO.

Perhaps the worst service i've ever had.

I just wrote Sixt an Email, concerning this matter. But i wanted to share it here aswell.

I called the German Call center to rent a Mercedes C class. The price the operator could quote me, was a bit higher than the price shown online.

However the price i was reffering to was a special "weekend" only offer, and therefore i couldnt get it at that price.

We have a minor chit chat about it, and i descide not to rent the car. And as i am about to hang up, he tells me. " I can do a special offer for you" - which i consider a good way to keep costumers, who where about to leave your store :)

However, the initial price was around 290 euro for 3 days. But he quoted me 220 Euro for 3 days. And i accepted - asking offcourse, if all the terms where the same.

Drove from Copenhagen to Harislee - and when i pick up the car, i get told that the price he quoted me was with NO insurance at all. Which means, that i was basically self responsible for any damage costs to the car.

I then ask, "well whats the price including the insurance?", and i get quoted the 290 euro again.

So here i am, at 16:45 in Harislee, with the possibility of going 900 km'ers in my own car, or my rented car. Cause the clerk at the desk isnt going to change the price or try and fix it.

I end up paying, the full amount, and leaving with the car.

They upgraded me to a more expensive car, which btw wasnt cleaned inside really well.

So i guess, that if you pay close to 300 euro to borrow a car 3 days - be carefull you get what you order.

I aint using Sixt again.

*********************** UPDATE ***************************

I was contacted by Sixt after my complaint written here on trustpilot.

They excused the mistake, and refunded me the difference from the price i ordered at and the price i paid.

My main concern wasnt really the money, it was the fact that i fealt wrongfully treated by their company.
But a full appolegy and a refund is as much as you can ask for in a situation like this.

Thumbs up for putting things right! :)

best regads.

Michael
