Squarespace charged me significantly more to renew then what was outlined in the quotation email.
Unfortunately I have now learnt that Squarespace are one of these companies that have zero customer service. No response to emails, no live chat service. I can already tell its going to be a nightmare to transfer to a different provider.
Update for other frustrated Square users. To see what your current price will be or to renew your domain: You must click the AUTO RENEW if you don’t it will just expire. I Hate their website!!! First off Square does not work well on Chrome. They have all these buttons and choices, I ALWAYS end up on the road of circles and frustration! If the forwarding loaded right, I could see the whole page, I could also forward the first time I filled everything out. I write customer service and they sound like BOTS. I finally get this one guy who told me I would would have to use incognito on Chrome. WHAT A PITA!! Thank goodness I am smart, I understood quickly that it was a Square glitch, so I went to Safari and it worked. Then I want to pay for my domaines expiring in 7 days, my choice is AUTO PAY. I do not like auto pay for such things. The kicker is, we were told by Google our first year with Square they would honor Google price WHAT A JOKE! They are 2-3 time MORE MONEY! So now I am shopping for a new home to park my domaines, I have 30 of them.
Someone has unscrupulously registered MY OWN NAME, .com and has the unethical behaviour to contact me personally to sell me my own name .com for USD$500 This is unacceptable that someone invades my privacy and intimidates me by trying to demand such ransom for the purchase of my own name. That is attacking my individual privacy. This practice should not be permissible. Why the hell isn't this person acquiring real potential business names instead of preying on people. This is affecting my personal life and my professional life as an Interior Designer. Because this person preyed on me, acquired MY NAME .com on SquareSpace.com platform, indicates that this person is hacking honest individuals who are just trying to make a living for themselves. But if I can't even open an account on their platform without honing my own privacy and personal name, this is not the kind of environment I want to evolve with. I am being scammed out of my own name by some unscrupulous individual and their administration doesn't seem to have any policy for such behaviour. I want to recover my own name from this despicable individual such that I can operate my practice as Interior Designer. I want out of SquareSpace.com and transfer all my domain names to another plateform. SquareSpace.com environment cannot be trusted. I owned the domain name, I owned the domain name at Domains.Google.com but because Google sold all its domains to SquareSpace.com, I got screwed in the transfer. I owned the domain name but I needed to renew it on March 24th 2024. But because Google dols its domains to SquareSpace.com and transferred all domains to them, I have missed the renewal date on March 24th 2024 and this guy snatched my domain name of my personal name and now is contacting me to sell me my own domain name for USD$500. That's crazy and for this reason SquareSpace is unreliable because it allowed immediate resale of my domain name. And now SquareSpace.com is incapable of sorting things out and giving me my domain name of my own personal name back.
Had no issues with the website I built through Squarespace in 2020(?), and when I no longer needed it, I recall no problems cancelling. However, I kept the domain name for an annual payment. I now no longer require that, and trying to cancel auto renew is ridiculously difficult. The website won't let me log in - page just freezes. Eventually found a way to raise the issue via an online form, and the amount of info they want is crazy. I've had to submit Govt documents, bank statements, dates I created my account and last logged on (four years ago maybe - I can't remember!)- all just because I can't log in. Form finally submitted.
Decided to see if anyone else has found this such hard work, and came across these reviews. Now I have no faith that my query will be resolved before next payment is taken. Resorted to phoning my bank and having a block put on Squarespace from taking money from my account. What a ridiculous palava. Seems geared towards making it difficult so you give up, which is exactly what I did last year.
Edit - they did get back to me the same day, and problem sorted. Still doesn't excuse the great lengths I had to go to in simply requesting the communication.
I've cancelled my subscription about 6 months ago and I'm still getting charged even after stopping the auto renew. In short, a scam. Reason why I left and gone to someone else was the endless passages you need to perform just to add one item to the e-commerce. Customer service non existent. Much better cheaper & less time consuming alternative around
Squarespace sent me a notification on the 4th Dec that my website would renew at £180 later that month. Come the renewal date they took £244.80 from my account! I’ve emailed them about this and had no reply. They simply don’t care about their customers. All they do is endlessly spam out ads via YouTube ‘influencers’. Their website builder is poor (you can’t even let a customer upload a file via their web forms). The 1 star reviews here should tell you all you need to know. Avoid this company like the plague. It’s too late for me now as they’ve already taken my money, but next year I’ll be cancelling my subscription and moving to one of their competitors. Enough is enough!
Squarespace as far as I can see is basically a money grabber. They seem to be one of these companies that’s excellent at “talking the talk” but offering little no substance thereafter. The website builder is difficult and in no way suitable for beginners.
The main issue I had was with the auto renew. Fortunately they agreed to a prorated refund but only after I threatened legal action.
I’d strongly advise people to avoid Squarespace. Pick any competitor name out a hat and go with them. Guaranteed they won’t be as amateur.
Make sure you turn off auto renew because they won’t refund if you turn it off even the next day. They claim they email you prior. What if you don’t have access to that email account? What if their email goes to spam? Too bad sucker. You pay for a year for nothing.
I put a lot of work into designing a site for my business that I had up for several years and paid my annual fees. Then one day the site dissappeared from the web without warning or explanation. It was bizarre. Who operates like this? I contacted the BBB because they have no customer service phone number and was told they couldn't locate my account. Meanwhile they were sending me emails to pay my annual renewal fee. At least the timimg was right. I just didn't pay to renew and now I have to start from scratch with a dofferent company. Very poor business.
After receiving a bill to renew my site for 144.00. square space deducts 276.00 out of my AMX. they have no customer service and no phone to reach out to other than email, after sending several emails I received no reply; so I had American Express dispute the charges... now I receive an email threatening to delete my site if I go ahead with this dispute. the worst..
I would suggest ignoring the bad reviews. Whenever I have sought help from their online support team they have always been really helpful, even if it is just an online chat function. The website designs and tools are very good and although it does take some getting used to, they are great to work with even for someone as technologically inept as me.
I found that most reviews giving 1-star ratings are from people who have been hit by the auto-renew membership charge at the end of the 14-day trial period. It is VERY CLEAR that you will be charged after 14 days so if you decide not to sign-up but forget to cancel, then why is the company at fault for YOUR idiocy?
Squarespace is a fraudulent company, stay as far away as you can. They had my self designed domain for two years. When I still was able to login, I cancelled my home page buy "stop auto renew". So what happened then? They sold my domain to a company called GoDaddy, and next it was with a Barbados company and I could buy it back for a few thousand USD. Now it is a scam page about people earning millions on bitcoin. They sold my domain and I can not get it back. Still they are rude enough to charge my Master card USD 180 - for what I don't know! I hope the rumour will spread fast and get this company out of business.
really, really hard to manage your account; I have 4 tabs open and still can't work out how to either cancel auto renew or cancel full stop.
I have been using SquareSpace for years mainly because it is easy to copy from Word into their blog and because I'm already there. But I despise this company. They have zero customer service, and no phone service. They have problems with their plans. For instance, the plan that I originally bought looks terrible on mobile, and they have no software to install it into another of their web builders. They'll tell you that you need to renew, and then they'll start a whole new plan instead of renewing the plan you have. I detest companies like SquareSpace that provide no customer service.
Unlike the other reviews listed, I've never had an issue with the auto-renew, and when I started out they even retroactively applied a discount for me which they didn't have to. The customer support have always been super helpful - especially the Dublin office (I'm UK based so I probably get put through to my closest one) and I find the actual builder to be easy to use, maybe not as easy as Wix initially but produces much more aesthetic websites than Wix's approach of drag and drop anywhere and kind of do it all by eye. The setting of header themes and colours across the site helps keep everything fitting together and the selection of fonts are really lovely. Also accessing these all in one panel saves me time when putting it all together.
Another point to Squarespace is you can do more without the need for premium widgets. Want to send form information to MailChimp? No widget required. Want to add limited edition products? No widget there too. I've only found I've needed one widget for my site so far and it's only $60 for a year. The most expensive plan is a little more pricey than other options, but you generally need less add-ons.
I use this for Ecommerce which isn't even the main use, generally Squarespace is used by bloggers, photographers and those in creative fields due to the stylish templates, but it still works great for online sales if you pick the right template.
The reason this isn't a 5* is that it can be a little limiting. Subscriptions are very set and you don't have much flexibility in them, as are customer accounts as the customer has no ability to change their email or delete the account. Also from a personal standpoint I can't delete a customer's data myself which is a serious issue when it comes to GDPR, but if you inform their team they will delete the information for you in a timely manor so it isn't too bad. You can ask for requests but they never let you know if they'll look into adding it or if it gets rejected as an idea, so it just feels like you submit a request and it gets forgotten about but I've found that to be the case for Wix too.
I used this service for 3 years, and in those 3 years I have been charged for things that I didn't want twice. The most recent was when they charged me to renew the site after I had canceled my website and removed my payment method from the website, and they proceeded to reinstate my autopay, causing an overdraft on my unused card and incurring me fees. I contacted customer service (which by the way you can only do through email no phone or chat) And they basically told me there's no possible way they could have charged me if my card hadn't been on file, Even though I sent them screenshots showing where my payment section was completely empty. they then proceeded to tell me that there's no way those slots could be empty because if you remove a card it has to be replaced with one, even though they're looking at a photo of proof that that's not the case.
They then told me that the only time auto-renew had been closed was when I had emailed them, Even though I had canceled two months prior and removed my payment info (which they claimed was impossible despite looking at proof).
They are very good at charging you for things and then claiming that you wanted them, when you canceled them. They will say you're at fault, and that they can do whatever they want. they don't care if they've caused you a ton of money in fees by charging a credit card that you removed and is no longer usable.
There's no phone for contact so you're stuck emailing back and forth. very horrible and underhanded company and I will not work with them in the future. Sure the site is easy to work with, but being scammed out of your money constantly and being called a liar by customer service is not worth it.
Billed for auto renewal for website for "my comfort" and dont offer any chance of refund after they have charged your card. Siting their "refund policy" that you have been sent an e-mail that "warns" you that they are about to renew the subscription, 15 days before they do so. That email is off-course buried amongst the hundreds of other e-mails from them trying to inform you on other offers or settings ect...
I was planning on mooving to wordpress because of the terrible customer service, limited options, terrible e-commerce...ect.
It looks like they are just getting away with robbing me of an annual fee. because you have to cancel, to even be able to contact them, with out any assurance of a refund. Pretty terrible customer service.
Im literally Fuming over this.
One of the most limiting website-building platforms there is.
Not only that but the auto-renew feature is extremely annoying. Particularly if you're in the habit of purchasing multiple domains at once.
I was charged for a renewal the I was assured would not automatically renew.
When writing my complaint to them, i had to check a box "confirming I’ve cancelled this website subscription and acknowledge that my request won’t be reviewed if the website subscription is still active” But I followed the "Learn how to cancel” link months ago and the steps weren’t coherent with the available options on the website! So how am I supposed to follow a guide that doesn’t ring true on the actual website? I am infuriated.
I was thinking about designing another website with Squarespace, but now I am going to move to Wordpress as I feel cheated. I still haven’t got a refund or am I able to cancel subscription.
I have never used the domain. What a waste of time and money.
It is impossible to cancel their auto-renew, BEWARE.
I am going to have to dispute this charge with my credit card company. I foolishly signed up for this a year ago and did not use it at all. I had a reminder on my calendar to cancel my subscription 2 weeks before the 1 year mark and I did so. I even got an email saying my subscription has expired. (There was NO email saying my subscription had renewed.) Thank goodness I checked my credit card because I saw a charge for the next year.
They are a scam. It's virtually impossible to cancel this auto-renew.
