Fraudulent trading

As the Chairman of a small registered charity, we needed to purchase a copy of Microsoft Office 2021 and Tekgia offered a special deal for charities. We purchased the software for £169.98 on 15th January 2026 and I was told that, after downloading the software, I would receive an activation code from Microsoft, after registering with their nonprofit portal. No code has been received either from Microsoft or from Tekgia and the software no longer works.
I had numerous email exchanges with Mr Robert Wilkins (aka Tekgia) and was given a variety of excuses but none of these involved chasing Microsoft for my access code. Here is an example of the long-winded waffle provided in one of these emails from Mr Wilkins:

"I have laid out the options. If there was a legal option of our creating a key for you software, I would have told you about it.
"There are two aspects to consider here.
The first aspect is to look at this from Microsoft's point of view.
"Look at the huge financial advantage that Microsoft is providing you. We'll use Microsoft Office 2021 Standard as an example. The full price is £567.60. The current discounted price for a charity is £169.98. That is a saving of £397.62.
"Obviously, Microsoft wants to make sure that such a discount only goes to those that are eligible, hence the Microsoft Online Eligibility Form.
"It probably takes most people about 15 minutes to complete the Microsoft Online Eligibility Form. So 15 minutes spent to save £397.62. That is a good deal.
"Look it another way. If you were on the National Minimum Wage of £12.21 per hour, you would have to work over 32 hours to earn £397.62.
"So if someone, in order to gain £397.62, had to choose between 15 minutes and 32 hours, I think most people would choose the 15 minutes.
"Unfortunately your experience has not been a smooth one.
"However, if you spend less than 32 hours you would still gain financially. Now, I am not suggesting you spend 32 hours on it. But I am saying that you have the option of spending another 15 minutes or so on it by making a second submission.
"The second apsect to look at is the legal aspect. You will see that once you have gone through the eligibility process that this is legitimate.
"There is plenty of illegal Microsoft software for sale. It is sold very cheaply. How can you tell that they it is illegal?
"Like Apple and Adobe, Microsoft does not do cheap. That is why Microsoft is one of the richest companies on the planet. Microsoft is currently worth $2.968 trillion.
Best,
Bob"

As you can see, none of this was helpful or intended to provide the activation code required by the software. As far as I can tell, Tekgia is simply one person, Mr Robert Wilkins.
I have reported this trader to Trading Standards and a scam web site and opened a dispute with PayPal.
He is clearly operating a scam, so my advice is to give his business a wide birth.
Reply to Mr Wilkins:
His long-winded diatribe is irrelevant. None of these caveats were visible on his web site, or made clear at the time of purchase. My contract was with him, not with Microsoft, so it is his responsibility to ensure that the contract is fulfilled. He has failed to do that.

Most of what Mr Quayle says is correct. But his understanding of how Microsoft operates is incomplete.

Allow me to make things clear.

1. If you buy from us on behalf of a charity and you are seeking a charity discount, you have to fill in a form so that can Microsoft can evaluate your eligibility.

This is the form:

https://signup.nonprofit.microsoft.com/en-us/welcome-policies

2. We answer questions and offer advice.

3. It doesn't take long to fill in the non-profit eligibility form. Mr Quayle has probably spent more time on his Trustpilot review than he has done filling in the form.

4. There is no law that says that Microsoft has to provide a discount on their software to non-profits. It is a philanthropic policy initiative, not a legal obligation. Microsoft offers these discounts at their "sole discretion" to organizations that meet Microsoft's specific, internal criteria for charitable status.

5. Over the years, the rules have become stricter. For example, we used to be able to offer these non-profit discounts to trade unions. We no longer can.

6. Microsoft may sometimes ask questions and ask for evidence of the charitable nature of the organisation. We can provide advice on that when they do.

7. We don't make the rules. Microsoft does. But we do obey them.

8. Once Microsoft has decided that the charity is eligible, along with some other admin stuff, Microsoft will generate the keys in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal.

9. The customer then goes to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal, signs in, and gets his keys.

10. Microsoft will provide the charity with 3 keys. In Mr Quayle's case, he would have gotten one for Office 2024 Standard, another key for Office 2021 Standard, and a third for Office 2019 Standard. This means the charity can choose which version of Office they want to use.

11. The keys that Microsoft supplies are MAK product keys. MAK stands for Multiple Activation Key. Such a key allows you to activate your Microsoft Office many times. For example if you replace your computer and install Microsoft Office on your new one, you can use the same MAK key to activate it.

By the way, you don’t get a MAK product key with consumer versions of Microsoft Office.

12. Is it worth filling in the form? Well, the full price of Microsoft Office 2021 Standard that Mr Quayle mentions is £567.60. The discounted price that Mr Quayle is getting Microsoft Office 2021 Standard for is £169.98. You decide if that is worth it.

13. Some people have disagreements with the rules. They believe that they are somehow above the rules. That we can somehow bypass the Microsoft system and somehow magic up a key for them. But that is not the way the Microsoft system works.

14. There are businesses out there that sell Microsoft Office very cheaply and will supply the keys directly to their customers rather than through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal. But that is a bypass of the Microsoft system and such keys are not legitimate.

15. Mr Quayle is not the first person to write a 1-star review complaining about our sticking to the rules. It goes with the territory.

16. We sell legal Microsoft software. And we do so by the book.

17. One other thing. It is worth noting that Mr Quayle had the option of paying full price for Office 2021 Standard. If he had done that, there would have been no need for him to fill in the Microsoft form and wait for Microsoft to approve his eligibility status. As they say, "you pays your money and takes your choice."

Tekgia isn't always out to sell

Bob at Tekgia is brilliant at giving fair advice. I've used Tekgia a number of times for charities I'm involved in and am always impressed, as recently, when Bob suggests a free program if it does what we need and saves money. He understands the constraints charities face.

Easy ordering but patience is required.

Software ordering and initial online delivery was straightforward. Activation, however, was a long and drawnout process. Support was good, however, with helpful tips and comprehensive instructions on the many steps to go through to prove your organisation is bone fide. Once this is done and your organisation has a Microsoft Account your software can be verified and activated.

Exceptional Help and Support

My purchase of the Microsoft software for a charity appeared straightforward but M/soft want you to jump through so many hoops I nearly gave up. Bob at Tekgia patiently steered me through every step and encouraged me all the way. It was exceptional support that many other "Help"desks fail to achieve.

I have used Tekgia for several years.. BUT!

I have used Tekgia for several years quite successfully, but on February 1st this year I decided to upgrade my Office software to Office 21. It was fine for about two weeks, but then it was blocked because it hadn't been activated. I have lost count of the emails I have sent to Bob and also separately to their Customer Services, over the last three months, all of which have gone unanswered, apart from an automated response from Customer Services promising a reply soon! I have reinstalled Office 19 which is working perfectly, and have asked for my money back. I have even offered for them to sign into my computer remotely so they can verify that I am not running Office 21. But no response at all, other than their regular marketing emails!
Out of interest, I discovered yesterday that somehow I had managed to purchase two versions of Norton. A simple on-line chat with them resulted in them refunding my money which was in my bank account within 24 hours! That's Customer Service!

There are a number of things I like…

There are a number of things I like about Tekgia.

First is the discount on Microsoft software for chariites.

Second is the lengevity of product keys. I know that illegal keys can have short lifetimes and need replacing. Tekgia tell me that their keys are genuine and that they have never had to replace a key.

Number 3 is that the software they provide is legal.

4. is the ease of installing software. Before getting my software from Tekgia I used to have battle with the "Office Deployment Tool" to download and install Microsoft Office. If you don't know what the Office Deplyment Tools is, I suggest you keep well away from it. For those that have delved into the mysteries of the Office Deplyment Tools, you will know what I'm talking about, LOL. Anyway, with the Microsoft Office software from Tekgia, it just takes a couple of clicks to install - and that's the way I like it.

I bought a copy of MS Office LTSC standard 2021 from this company, no keys supplied, my emails and phone calls are unanswered. Previously they were good, but now alas they take money for that which they can not supply. There is a term for taking money under false pretences.

No product keys supplied

I purchased Microsoft 2021 in December for our charity, which was downloaded after some difficulty. No product keys have been supplied, in spite of several exchanges of emails and phone calls with Microsoft and Tekgia. The software is unusable in spite of assurances that Tekgia would handle it all.

Excellent

Excellent. Bought software for the charity that I work for in 2019, and needed to reinstall it on acquiring a new computer. I had lost the original instructions but spoke to Bob who guided me through the process, and resent me the instructions. Could not have been nicer. Many thanks.
