Poor Customer Service and Unreasonable Compensation

I booked a ticket for my family with United Airlines, and it was clearly stated that the ticket was cancellable. I even added travel insurance for extra protection. However, when I contacted customer service, I was told that the ticket was an “Economy” fare and therefore non-refundable, despite the information I saw during the booking process.

What’s worse is that the proposed compensation was higher than the original ticket price, which makes absolutely no sense. On top of that, the customer service representatives were rude and unhelpful, which only made the situation more frustrating.

This was a very disappointing experience, and I will not be booking with United Airlines again.

An absolute dumpster fire

In December of last year, I bought 2 1-way tickets through United for me and my wife from Belo Horizonte to Québec, a decision I regret deeply.
Because of a family emergency and visa delays, we had to cancel the trip a few days after booking. I requested a refund, but this train wreck of a company denied my request. Instead, they gave me 2 "future flight credits," under our names, to be used later, with the combined value of roughly 1300 USD.

Fine, I took it; the credits are valid for one year. About a week ago, I decided to give these credits to a family member, so United, a 6.55 billion dollar company, would not just pocket my money for nothing. I then discovered these credits are not transferrable, because why would anything ever be in favor of the customer, right? Great, I contacted them to see what could be done, and I was told, BY THEM, I could contact them with yet another refund request, asking to have these credits converted to "travel certificates," which essentially means they'd become transferrable; they just couldn't be used to book flights in another company.

Fast forward to today; I received an email DENYING my conversion request because apparently, "Travel credits are no longer offered." ZERO EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THAT'S THE CASE. So, now I'm stewing in rage while writing this review, because this is the only way I can, maybe, and that's a big maybe, get my money back. I'm a student in the first year of my PhD; there's absolutely no possibility of me being able to make a trip before these credits expire, and even if I could, I obviously don't have the funds to do so. But hey, why would, and I repeat, a 6.55 BILLION dollar company, allow the vast fortune of 1300 USD to be transferrable? I guess I'm the greedy one.

If you ever, for any reason, decide to travel with United, just don't. Take another airline, a train, a bus, a car, a bicycle, a horse, hell, even powerwalk there, but do not give these trash goblins even a single dime. They deserve nothing.

My heart goes out to their low-level employees, who were nothing if not helpful and willing. They are the only glimpse of humanity left in this void of greed they call a corporation.

I upgraded to first class for this…

I upgraded to first class for this overnight 6 hr flight.
I love the little pod with the lie flat chat. Comfy pillow, blanket and overnight bag.
I have never flown first class so I can only compare to economy.
I slept through nearly all of it.
From what I saw the entertainment options were good.
I slept through food options (I was asked if I wanted to be woken, I said no).
Staff friendly and helpful.

NO REFUND from United Airlines

I will avoid United Airlines, no matter what it costs. I booked my previous trip with United Airlines. The flights were all fine and the prices were acceptable. However, something went terribly wrong. Due to uncertainty, I decided to book one flight with a fully refundable ticket which I was glad about because, in the end, I needed to cancel this flight. After cancelling it, my flight was nowhere to be found in my purchase history. Refunds should be transferred within a couple of days but I still have NOT RECEIVED my refund worth of about 500EUR. I tried to request my refund on united.com but because the flight is entirely erased from my account, I can't request anything. This makes me feel SCAMMED and reaching the customer service is very hard and when I do reach them, they tell me they can't help me. I guess there will be no way to get my refund back. Please be warned by my experience, paying extra for a refundable ticket will not pay off.

Shameless conduct for United upper management review

I booked a flight with United Airlines on August 29th. The price for the same itinerary went down within 24 hours from my booking. There was a heavy storm in my area, and I was not able to access my booking online, thus I called the customer service for help. After 45 min waiting for the agent on the phone, the call was disconnected. It was at night/ early morning time, around 2:30 am, and, apparently, the agents did not work, despite the fact that United Airlines misleadingly claimed that the customers can get help 24/7. I contacted the customer service of United in the morning, explained the situation and my unsuccessful attempt to cancel my flight within 24 hours, but ....the customer service manager Ms. Dona Wilson did not listen to me and showed no attempt to help. She sounded like an answering machine and was very cold. Per my opinion, she is taking a wrong position as she does not have any interpersonal skills to hold this position. I feel bad, realizing that United Airlines is losing the customers respect and business by refusing to honor the $46.00 adjustment for the new price of my tickets. However, being a senior citizen, this amount makes a big difference for me and my husband. This is a shame! No respect!

Horrible website and Customer Service

Horrible website! Doesn't save flight information previously entered. after doing it a second time I gave up. System generates a "cart" number for a reservation. Unfortunately there is no input screen for a cart number. Customer support is almost as bad as their website. They hire non English speaking people that are impossible to understand. Spent 5 minutes ti get the confirmation number. Unfortunately, they are the only airline that flies non -stop from Newark to Key West.. Used to fly with them many years ago but switched to Continental which was way better all around. Unfortunately, Continental was absorbed by guess who and they are even worse than they used to be,

Vintage experience

Thank you United for this Vintage experience… a direct jump to 30years back travel standard. I’m speaking about first class experience. United do not provide lounge for domestic flight, old aircraft, worse first - business class ever experienced. Food: you have to select in advance otherwise is not guaranteed onboard and you have to accept what they have. Quality is very very low. On the return we experienced 2 hours delay: after boarding, the aircraft had a technical problem. We were kept sitting: no water no food no drinks during the waiting time was offered, for 2 hours… I felt I was in third world not in US…. A good word is about the flight assistants: always very nice.
I don’t recommend and I will avoid this airline company in the future.

A Nightmare Experience with United…

A Nightmare Experience with United Airlines: Lost Luggage, Canceled Flights, and Zero Assistance

Confirmation Number: LS7XX4

I recently had the most horrendous experience with United Airlines during my trip from Charlotte to Sacramento, and I feel compelled to share my ordeal. From start to finish, United Airlines' customer service failed me at every turn, leaving me exhausted, frustrated, and out of pocket.

My troubles began when my flight from Charlotte (UA3440) to Chicago was on January 6 at 5:49 pm. Upon arriving in Chicago, I was informed that my connecting flight (UA2317) to Sacramento had been canceled. Shockingly, the airline provided no assistance or guidance, leaving me to fend for myself. I had to pay for my own hotel accommodations and meals, which was an unexpected and unnecessary expense.

To make matters worse, United Airlines lost my luggage during this chaotic ordeal. Despite assuring me that they had sent it to Sacramento, they failed to consult with me about my preference. Consequently, I found myself stranded in Chicago without any personal belongings or essentials to take care of myself.

The following morning, I arrived at the airport at 7 AM for my rescheduled flight (UA711) at 8:45 am. However, after boarding the plane, we were kept seated for nearly two hours due to a navigation problem. Eventually, we were informed that the flight was being returned to the gate. Seeking assistance, I approached customer service, only to be told that there were no available flights to Sacramento or the surrounding area, except for Reno, NV. Frustrated and desperate, I reluctantly booked flight UA2305 at 7:51 PM.

Throughout the entire day, United Airlines provided absolutely no support or assistance. I was left stranded at the airport, with no compensation or provisions to alleviate the situation. This lack of care and concern for their passengers is simply unacceptable.

Finally, after a long and exhausting journey, I arrived in Reno at 10:20 PM. To reach Sacramento, I had to rent a car, incurring additional expenses and further delays. The entire trip took me almost two days, causing me to lose money and miss work. As a result, I am now facing potential repercussions at my job and may even have to resort to legal action to address the damages caused by United Airlines' negligence.

In conclusion, my experience with United Airlines was an absolute nightmare. From canceled flights and lost luggage to zero assistance and a complete lack of empathy, their customer service was abysmal. I strongly advise against relying on United Airlines for any travel needs, as they have proven to prioritize profit over the well-being and satisfaction of their passengers.

Twice as long and bad for more money

I booked a round-trip ticked from SFO to ATL. The app for Mac crashed immediately before even being able to login to check in, so I downloaded the phone app, which said I had no current or past flights even though it said I had 555 Mileage points. The web version said I had 2,227 Mileage points but still not flights ever. I Chatted with an agent who quickly got and emailed my boarding pass. Once aboard, I sat on the tarmac for 3 hours before takeoff (UA277 on 12/20/2023). The following issues were notable: 1. Site not working - had to call to get boarding pass
2. when I login on the phone app, it says it doesn’t recognize me. Even though it’s prepopulated . #RG089958
3. Flight delayed by hours.
4. UA offered us nothing for our suffering- no WiFi
5. No charging on plan
6. No videos/screen at all
7. Not even music to listen to
8. App crashes when you try to buy WiFi during flight
9. Brought a book, but overhead light was very dim and shines on the back of one's neck and is immobile.
10. Kid behind watching kid shows loudly without earphones; attendant said nothing.
11. Most food on menu unavailable; just a box of snacks.
12. In flight Information doesn’t tell you how long you have left on the flight or even a map showing the plane route. Can’t tell what time zone. Useless.
13. No music / headphones
14. Some rows have charging near the front only.
15. Headrests on rows ahead of me a bigger. very inconsistent even though all coach class.

On return flight UA1259 on 12/29, yet another one hour delay. I will never fly United again after this gruelling experience for which I paid nearly $800 to avoid Frontier and Spirit. I see now that United has the lowest possible Trustpilot.com rating. I can tell you that in my case, this rating is justified.

Notably, the pilot and flight attendants were good. The pilot seemed sympathetic, but they kept us on the plane three hours without offering anything like free WiFi or a beverage.
Addition: It is now 8:47pm and not one person has boarded the flight that was supposed to leave at 7:30pm and the airport is nearly empty, at least in this section. It does not give one confidence to say the least and I paid up for this.

United's Policy on purchasing a ticket…

United's Policy on purchasing a ticket for someone and then they cancel the flight with in a day is terrible. A ticket was purchased for a recipient and the flight was cancelled almost immediately. Instead of sending a flight credit to the credit card owner, they sent it to the recipient instead. Since when do they make fraudulant decisions for a stranger to have control of the purchaser's credit card charge that was made. The recipiant cancelled flight reservation and the credit card holder has no way of claiming the cancelled as a flight credit, even though it was purchased off the owners credit card fraudulantly.

Fraud of Refund Voucher

Around 6 months ago, I was forced to cancel a family flight and received a voucher number to get a discount to book a new flight.

The new flight booking is not accepting the voucher code. The costumer support made the booking manually and received the same error and requested to change the voucher into a discount code.

The answer from the CS team is that a refund is impossible. I corrected them saying the other CS requested a discount code, not a refund.
The Email bounces back. No answer given.
I was in 49 countries in around 200 flights globally with endless of flying companies. But united was one out of two (Turcish Airlines second) which is involved in unfunctional service that causes fraud.

United is costing me $244 I won't forget

On my way back from a business travel from Denver CO to London UK I had to pay a fortune to select one of the few row seats still available, because I like to be able to stand up and go to the toilet without bothering anybody to let me through. When I try to locate the past trip and get the receipt for the seat selection, United website simply throws a series of schizophrenic errors.

Finding past trips? Impossible to do so using the confirmation number and last name. It doesn't matter if confirmation number meets criteria, or if I enter the last name exactly the way it is spelled in the ticket, it doesn't find it.

Finding receipts? The website finds none, not even of the entire flight ticket.

I nightmare

I choose United because of the time schedule. It was the fastest option among many others from Rome to San Diego and from Washington to Rome for my return flight. 15 days before departure they changed the connecting flight of my return trip (from Munich to Rome) so that I would have been waiting 10 hours at the airport on August 26th. So, despite struggling to get an earlier flight with their customer call center, I was able to reschedule earlier my connection flight on August 26th but had to renounce to my business class ticket since there were no seats available and travel economy. When arrived in Munich I thought it was my contractual right to access the Lufthansa business lounge where I could have been waiting the earlier flight I booked with you. Lufthansa denied me and my family access to the lounge because of my economy class ticket on their flight. The trip to US on August 5th was if possible even worst. We lost the connection to San Diego at Newark because its departure time was too close to the arrival time of the preceding flight considering the long line at the passport control at the US border petrol. We finally (after many attempts) were able to find someone helping us but again, no business class seats available, then we traveled in economy catching a later flight to San Diego. To sum up, I paid more than 14 thousand dollars for my flights with United and chose them because of the apparent fastest time schedule. Instead I spent 24 hours and 18 hours for may trip to US and return to Italy respectively being not even able to access a lounge room to rest with may family after a never ending nightmare. I’m expecting United to reimburse me with the difference between the business class and the economy fare both for the connecting flight in the US and the one in Europe. In any case I have something to tell them: “If you are not able to do your job, close the airline business and open a bus transportation company, although I do believe you would be able not even to run a family shop.
