Avoid West Coast Hi-Fi Online: Complete Failure of Setup and Shocking ACL Breaches
I am writing this review to warn other consumers about the deceptive practices, hostile communication, and severe disregard for the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) displayed by West Coast Hi-Fi Online.
I purchased a Yamaha RX-V6A receiver ($998.00 AUD) and a Klipsch R-600 5.1 Home Theatre Pack ($2,680.00 AUD) as a promotional bundle totalling $3,678.00 AUD. This setup was explicitly recommended as a compatible match by their sales team.
The Equipment Failure:
After just five hours of use, the underpowered Yamaha receiver suffered a catastrophic power transformer failure under load. Because the receiver's software protection features failed to kick in to mitigate the issue, the severe internal surge traveled down the lines and caused catastrophic voice coil/tweeter failure across all five Klipsch speakers, destroying the entire system. Despite this, the retailer produced a premature technical report blaming "user error" before any qualified independent party had physically inspected the equipment.
The Retailer's Response & ACL Breaches:
Since the catastrophic failure, the retailer has actively tried to avoid their legal obligations under the ACL:
1. Unlawful Conditioning of Refunds (Section 64 & Section 29): The retailer explicitly tried to condition my refund on the removal of my negative online product reviews. Consumer rights cannot be traded for silence, and misrepresenting a legally mandated refund as a "gesture of goodwill" is a breach of the law.
2. Coercive Shipping Terms (Section 259 & Reg 125): Under the ACL, the retailer is responsible for all return freight and courier costs for a major failure. Instead, I was subjected to over 30 aggressive emails trying to force me to pay or take responsibility for upfront shipping. The retailer even threatened to cancel shipping labels entirely because of a one-letter typo in his name from a mobile auto-correct.
3. Denial of Consequential Loss (Section 259(4)): The total destruction of the $2,680.00 AUD speaker package was a direct, foreseeable result of their recommended receiver’s failure. Limiting the remedy to the receiver alone is illegal.
I have flatly refused to waive my rights or accept their conditional terms. Consumer Affairs Victoria has been engaged, and a VCAT hearing is currently lodged to pursue my full, unconditional refund and coverage for all consequential damages.
Do not trust this company's pre-purchase advice, and be prepared for an absolute nightmare if their recommended equipment fails.
