Scam artists. Should be criminalised
Atrocious. Complete scam artists. If I was to go in depth to reveal the level of utter disappointment firebrand is, it would take me hundreds of pages. I will give a brief overview of some of the main reasons firebrand training is a poor decision if you want IT training.
1) Fundamentally the concept is flawed. Their USP is 'accelerated training' but this translates to having 12 hour lectures every day. This is not conducive to good learning - most people will learn by doing the thing they are trying to learn. Being talked at for 12 hours just does not work, studies have shown this time and time again. I can't say, after the training I have done, that I learned anything more than what I would have in a traditional environment in the same amount of time - that is to say, I have now less understanding than i would have had, had I gone to a traditional training provider.
2) Their marketing materials are dodgy, and in some ways are outright lies (and to me should be illegal). When you join, they give you a really juvenile questionnaire, that ostensibly is meant to judge what 'kind of learner you are'. I know that I am a hands on learner - i prefer to do things in order to learn them (not simply be told how to do them), however, everyone who took this questionnaire was suspiciously heavily weighted towards 'audio' based learning (convenient, as their teaching method is talking at you for 12 hours because there is no time for practical work). So this is basically a confidence trick to make you think that you're getting the teaching style that is appropriate for you. However - more importantly - and I will put this in caps so it is crystal clear - IF YOU ARE AN APPRENTICE, YOU DO NOT GET THE QUALIFICATIONS THEY PROMISE. On their website you will see it plastered everywhere that you will gain the qualifications if you take a course which has one. However, this is not true for apprentices for some arbitrary reason - however, do you think they mention this ANYWHERE? Do you think anyone knew this before signing a contract with Firebrand? Of course not! A complete scam!
3) Their communication is pitiful. It's difficult for me to put into words the level of incompetence of firebrand in the communication department. It is almost comical how poor it is - on one occasion, they sent us a training date, only for us to arrive after an almost 2 hour journey on this date to be told that they cancelled it - and didn't bother to inform us. Great! Not only that it took us several months just to get the dates in order because they were just completely unclear as to when the training will take place. Their course identifications were wrong, which led to MORE communication issues. This isn't to say you don't get a lot of emails however, in fact, you get so many your eyes begin to glaze over when you receive another. Really, this is only the beginning of frustration you will face dealing with Firebrand.
4) You're just a paycheck to them. Whilst I was there Ofsted was doing an inspection so they take all Apprentices aside into a room and basically threatened us into telling ofsted that everything was okay. I'm not joking, the lady was shouting, quite threateningly, that she could "stop our money" if we didn't tell ofsted that everything was okay. (Although she couldn't stop our money, so I'm not sure what she was talking about).
This only scratches the surface of how bad firebrand is. And trust me when I say these words don't come close to expressing the level of disappointment I have after training with firebrand. It is easily the worst career decision I have ever made.
However, I should mention that I have decided to remain in the process of completing my apprenticeship, so these views are preliminary for now (I have completed 3 of the 5 sets of training). I will of course update this review if my sentiment changes, if not, it shall remain as is.
