I went to AMS with a puncture in a rear…

I went to AMS with a puncture in a rear tyre, after keeping me 15 mins, they called me in to say I needed 2 back tyres as they had perished and cracked, I’d only owned the car for 2 weeks, and before purchasing I’d checked the car myself, I told them I’d and said I would take the car back to the main dealer I had purchased it from as they had sold me a car with unsafe tyres, however in the meantime could they just fix the puncture. They advised against it but agreed, 5 mins later they then inform me they can’t repair the tyre as it already had a puncture and needed to replace the tyre, I agreed to this it was in work time and I needed to get back to work. Since this I’ve taken the car back to the place of purchase who have inspected all tyres and said there is nothing wrong with any of them, no cracks or perishing. I’m now wondering if I really needed a new tyre? Or could the puncture have been fixed? Was this just a way of getting more money out of me. It’s not the first time AMS have tried to sell me something that isn’t needed, and in future I’ll be taking my business elsewhere

Backstreet trading garage

You will see many fake reviews for this tyre centre and so please be aware that a tyre centre is okay for having tyres replaced and not for fixing vehicles.

We took the car for an MOT and service and upon paying for the basics, were told that the car would require hundreds of pounds worth of work. We didn't wish to pay huge amounts for problems which had not been experienced as-of-yet and so just paid for the MOT test and basic service. When driving the car away, the gearbox was from that point unusable.

I recently took a phone-call from the garage over this matter and they made excuses and even lied, saying they are an accredited garage when they aren't - I checked with the Motoring Ombudsman.

Our requirement of a new gearbox can be verified, obviously because we paid for a new one at a different garage and it can be verified that we didn't need one before because I hadn't mentioned it in any previous conversations with the garage.

--- As an aside ---

Small businesses like this start up and are successful to some degree because their pals all use their services from the outset and so they have enough custom to obtain work in enough amount to roll over into further years business until they are established. Word of mouth companies are not worth the paper they are written on, or in this case their advertising literature masks a backstreet trader level reality.

I am a working professional and so understand what a high level of output is, and these types of unaccredited businesses are not professional in terms of standards. The work is shoddy and they break your vehicle because they don't know what they're doing. They're not qualified mechanics.

Anyone can 'have a go' at a car. I 'had a go' at fixing a Peugeot diesel 1.9's engine, the major and very large part deep into the heart of the vehicle and had to take loads of elements out of the engine and put them back and did this with use of a YouTube video. I had bought the part and which costed about one-hundred-and-fifty pounds from eBay. The actual fitting of this part would probably have cost around a further four-hundred-pounds (plus VAT). The car was fine after that. I expect garages on the high-street to be more advanced than consisting of staff-members who just 'have a go'.

As for the situation in hand and the gearbox, they most evidently broke it and undertook this because we didn't want to pay for imaginary problems and they managed to successfully break the gearbox by reversing the car off the ramp in such a way that sometimes damages gearboxes.

Either way, do yourselves a favour and stay away from dodgy mechanics. The difficulty is, they get a nice-looking website together and so you have no way of knowing...except that is if you find out first whether they are accredited or not. And I would personally advise that you take the time to do this in the saving of much hassle and expense.
