My wife and I rented a car as part of a travel package with Expedia travel group and when we arrived in Montego Bay we got picked up in a small Toyota Jolopy it had all the lights on the dash illuminated. It was smelly, dirty and was would not pass an auto safety test in any country. We were alarmed and requested another vehicle they had no vehicles in good condition. They finally cleaned up one of the cars and the brakes and tires were not good we drove it to the hotel and they promised to get us a good car. Half way through our stay they brought us another vehicle had a huge dent and scratches smelled like marijuana but at least the radio worked. They had no business cards and requested a $500 usd security deposit which we gave them along with $120 usd cash for liability insurance. Long story short it’s been 3 weeks and we haven’t received our security deposit back and Expedia haven’t been able to contact them. Warning this Auto Union is a scam it’s not part of the European auto union. Stay clear of this company not sure why a huge publicly traded company such as Expedia would recommend a scam to their clients. My advise is stay clear of Auto Scam Union Jamaica..

BE CAREFUL

BE CAREFUL - ALERT - SCAMMING. This is the worst company I've ever done business with. They will steal your money! They'll claim you returned the car damaged. They'll keep your deposit. They'll unilaterally sign a contract and make you pay for the costs. BEWARE! Take photos, make videos, and check everything in the car: windows, engine, oil, battery, etc. They wrongfully deducted €440.00 from my deposit. When they agreed with me that the scratches were already there, I signed the contract. Then they took me and my girlfriend to the airport. Shortly after, they called me and asked if they could keep half the deposit. Of course, I said no. While I was on the plane, they unilaterally signed a contract and made me pay for the scratches that were already on the car. Bunch of scammers. Go earn your money honestly.

EXTRA charges

I have now received my toll gate charges and although I spent £88 the extra charges on top amount to £143!
Not only did I pay for the actual car rental, not have the extra driver as promised, but have these on top!

EXTREMELY disappointed! These costs are VAT (already added on the actual toll charge) and service charges - not sure I'm responsible for these as a tourist!
Will NEVER use you again!!!!

DONT CHOOSE THIS COMPANY

They did not include on the booking that we need to call them to pick us up from the airport, so we had to wait for an entire hour after to get picked up from the airport. AND THEN, they said that since I chose the insurance through Expedia, we have to pay a deposit of $2500, OR we could get their insurance and pay $300 or $500. NO WHERE ON THE BOOKING DOES IT MENTION THAT WE NEED TO GET THE INSURANCE THROUGH THEM AND NOT EXPEDIA. Worst rental company EVER. Literally scamming their customers.

Time for Expedia to drop this Auto Union branch.

We reserved a car thru Expedia with Auto Union at Orlando airport for Oct. 17-19. We paid Expedia $219 for a two-day rental of a midsize car. Upon arrival at AU's office, we were told that we had to allow a provisional charge of $2500 on our credit card for a "security deposit." We were then advised that the State of Florida required the purchase of "liability insurance" for $119 per day in addition to the damage waiver coverage we had already purchased at the time we made the reservation. The rep. explained that we had to purchase this additional coverage because our own auto insurance company was not among the five or so "approved" insurance providers. At this point we decided that we no longer wished to rent from them and told them to cancel our reservation. They accepted our decision and told us to contact Expedia to request the refund since we had made the booking through Expedia. Another couple had exactly the same experience: they were told they had to pay an additional $700 for a one week rental. They also left for another agency. A review of this particular Auto Union franchise revealed a consistent pattern of misleading advertizing and attempts to extract additional and costly fees. Expedia should remove the Orlando Airport AutoUnion from its car rental offerings.

Left stranded

I had a confirmed reservation with Autounion for July 30th, with pickup scheduled at 22:30 from Krakow Airport. I arrived early at 22:15 and waited at the rental desk until 22:50, but no one showed up. The office shutters were down, and there was no representative in sight.

I attempted to contact the number provided on the voucher multiple times, but no one answered. I was left stranded at the airport with young children, late at night, and with no transportation or support. Absolutely disgraceful.

In the end, I had to book a last-minute rental from another company at a significantly higher cost just to get my family safely to our destination.

Autounion’s complete lack of professionalism and customer support ruined the beginning of our trip. Based on this experience, I strongly advise against using Autounion, especially if you're arriving during late hours. Unreliable, unresponsive, and unacceptable.

The company operates within not far

I rented a car from Auto Union in Portugal Lisbon and had some unexpected issues. I drove just one kilometer into Spain to visit a shopping mall and got charged a €150 penalty for crossing the border, which wasn’t clearly explained. The contract -rental agreement doesn’t provide a clarity about cross border at EU it just talked about some islands etc which is understandable and risk to company to loose the car it’s clear 😅, however to go on the road without clear signs to Spain ( 1km from virtual border ) it’s call scam !!? Plus, the insurance they provided didn’t cover theft, and the fine print mentioned charges that were way above the car’s value. Overall, it felt like unfair trading practices. Just sharing my experience so others can be aware!

Booked a car via rentalcars.com because it has always been good. Especially when traveling to Cyprus. This time was the first with Autounion - and the last. Had the car booked for 20.00 on Oct. 6th. Prepaid for 12 days.
Arrived later than scheduled to the airport and called for a shuttle pick up. Answer from Autounion was that the booking had been cancelled due to no show.
SO, never book with them if there are other alternatives.

Autounion Orlando was a terrible experience, once we arrived at their site they tried to charge me $800 to $1000 dollars more than I already paid with my credit card points.I declined and had to make last minute alternate plans for transportation, Beware of using them.

Clear Scam! Do not rent a car from this company!!

We rented a car from Sabiha Gökçen Airport in july, Istanbul, Turkey. The company charged us 16,000 TL(approximately 400 Euro) as a deposit, promising to refund it within 21 days. However, months have passed and they never returned the money. Despite many calls and messages, they kept delaying and eventually blocked us on WhatsApp.
This is a clear scam – the deposit was never refunded.
It seems they especially target foreign tourists, assuming they won’t pursue their rights.
I strongly warn everyone: Do NOT rent a car from this company.
We are taking legal action and will continue to report this fraud on every platform possible.

Recommend!

Was hesitant due to bad reviews here, but everything went smooth. Got two cans of iced tea for free because it was very hot, both when picking up the car and upon return!
Did book full insurance online, so maybe that's the key ;) Didn't try to sell me any extra insurance either! Recommend!

Catania airport car rental scam

Catania airport. Differental Autounion is a scam. They knew I had excess insurance, so they charged 710 Euros for a tiny scratch on the wheel. Didn't even clean the wheels to take photos. Car has parking sensor and camera, unlikely I had caused this damage anyway. Didn't take photos before rental as I couldn't find any damage in the dark at 11pm, didn't check the wheels. Make sure you take photos and have excess insurance, or avoid them. I read they could take months to return deposit...

A real scam

Car rented at Krakow airport, booked on discovercars.com
They forced me to take their full insurance, so I paid about 3 TIMES the initial price.
They told me they required the credit card used to book the car to be valid at least for 6 months after the rental, but the limitation was not mentioned anywhere in the voucher nor mentioned during the rental procedure. They refused any other offered payment method for the deposit - note that I also had my own car hire excess insurance.
I would have paid a lot LESS with a major car rental company.
Moreover, the car had an engine issue and I discovered it on the first trip out of Krakow two days after I collected the car, so I had to rearrange my plans. I got the replacement car about 24 hours after calling their customer support - at first they even asked me to bring the broken car by myself to the airport.

This company is a scam

This company is a scam! I had a paid voucher for a rental car addressed to Autounion at Bucharest airport at a very good price. This good price is a trap! if you do not agree to add at the counter, alot of money for an extra insurance that they demand, you will not get any car! They can not reject the voucher, so they tell you that your credit card for the safety deposit is rejected. I called my credit card company to find out what the problem is about and they have told me that my card is ok and they dont even see any request from this car rental company to block any amount for deposit, so oviously the card rejection was a lie. I rented a car from another company, using the same card without any problem.

Perfectly ok, at least in Greece

Cannot really understand all the bad reviews. I have been using them for decades in Greece and there was never a problem. Well, sometimes you have to be flexible and accept that the car you get is old and not in top condition, but never had serious issues. They never tried to sell me unnecessary insurance, and never took money from my card (instead of just blocking it). Will rent from them again.

⚠️ Avoid Auto Union Car Rental – 104 Montgomerie Road, Māngere, Auckland 2022, New Zealand ⚠️

I booked and paid for an intermediate SUV (Toyota RAV4 or similar). When I arrived at their Auckland Airport branch (104 Montgomerie Road, Māngere), I was told no such vehicles were available. Instead, I was handed a very old Nissan Serena that was rusty, dirty, and even had spider webs inside. It felt unsafe to drive and was clearly not part of a proper rental fleet. I accepted it only because I was stranded with no alternative, but I received no refund or adjustment for this massive downgrade.

Months later, Auto Union charged me $33.46 NZD for a $2.30 toll, which is more than 1,350% higher than the actual toll amount. Even worse, they waited over seven months to notify me. When I complained, they ignored the issue of the unsafe, unsuitable car and gave me generic excuses about “admin fees.”

This was the worst rental experience I have ever had:
• False advertising (booked an SUV, got an old van)
• Unsafe vehicle (rust, dirt, spider webs inside)
• Outrageous hidden fees (1,350% markup on a toll)
• Poor customer service (no accountability, no apology)

For peace of mind, transparency, and safety, I strongly recommend renting from a more reputable company in Auckland.

Rogue local operators used

The Autounion rental desk was not easy to find at Catania airport. The rental itself was "fulfilled" by a local operator called DIFFERENTAL. They scammed us out of an extra €385 for a made-up reason about not having an international drivers license. In contradiction to their T&C. They claimed those were updated two weeks earlier and were disinterested in my questions why those changes (if that's even true) were not notified such that I could cancel and book with another operator.

Although Autounion later refunded my money when I raised a formal complaint and threatened to escalate to the European ombudsman, it calls into question their judgement / choice of rogue local operators
