Autounion is a scam

Autounion is a scam. They charged me €610 for a small scratch on a wheel disc — damage that was already there and even dismissed by their own staff at pickup as “normal wear.” They gave no proof, took the money without consent, and acted dishonestly. Avoid this company at all costs.

Unfortunately there is no zero stars…

Unfortunately there is no zero stars options. Terrible service, scammers from A to Z throughout the experience. Hidden terms/ exorbitant deposits, old dirty cars, very painful experience. Cherry on top, very rude and unprofessional customer service trained to argue back and defend deceiving practices and refuse to admit any of their malpractices and offer no solutions nor apology. In short, do not use them.

Very bad experience

Very bad experience. I got a flat tire – they were completely uncooperative and arbitrarily charged an unreasonably high and unjustified amount – almost €300. They provided no documentation related to the tire replacement, which not only prevented me from claiming the expenses through insurance, but also from verifying whether such costs were actually incurred. I will never use their services again and I absolutely do NOT recommend them to anyone! Avoid this company – dishonest and profiting off people!!!

Nice staff, car tires poor condition

During the two-week rental period, 3 out of 4 tires on the vehicle had to be replaced. One tire failed during driving (posing a genuine life-threatening situation), and two additional tires were replaced during an inspection conducted by the rental company itself. This fact demonstrates severe negligence in the maintenance of the vehicle.
Equally concerning - during this emergency situation, I received no response from the local branch.

Do not rent a car from them

This was, without doubt, the worst rental pickup experience I have ever had.

The rental wasn't in the airport with the other rental counters. I had to phone to get instructions for how to get to the rental counter. I waited in the hot sun next to the smoking area to take our young family to a baking hot parking lot box.

- And then they wouldn't accept my credit card that had enough funds and I have used without issue for everything for the last 10 years or more.
- And they point to a bizarre requirement I have never seen anywhere of having to have a credit card from a physical bank with raised numbers on the card.
- And then they wouldn't accept any debit cards, even though we could have had funds on them to cover the entire cost of the car.
- And then they wouldn't accept Easyjet (who we rented through) changing the name on the booking to my wife's (so we could use her credit card) because it wouldn't reflect on your system because it was now after the start of the booking even though we didn't even wait to collect checked bags but came straight off the plane to the counter.
- And then they wouldn't accept an official email from Easyjet with the new paperwork for no apparent reason.
- And then no one at their head office would pick up the phone when Easyjet tried to contact them and they wouldn't help them further.
- And then the only solution they offered us was to pay for "their insurance" which you gave us no details or paperwork about.
- And the insurance came to 1.5x the total cost of the car rental, which we'd already paid booking through Easyjet which had already included insurance.
- And we couldn't change any aspects of that insurance, even though when we later received the contract it was broken down into separate parts.
- And then they wouldn't hold the car for longer than 1 hour while we tried to figure out what to do.
- And it wasn't easy to check other car rentals because the office wasn't next to other rental counters as it wasn't in the terminal, and to check I'd have to wait for a shuttle back to the terminal either taking all bags and young kids or leaving them to wait in a parking lot while you held our car only for an hour.
- And then they wouldn't let us rebook the same car in my wife's name because apparently they had 15 other people waiting for that car even though we were standing at the rental counter with my family and the car was already booked for us and we have the same family name.
- And so I finally agreed to just pay the extra for their insurance—which felt like a total scam.
- And then once that was paid they said the car wasn't ready and was just going in for a wash.

They said they will return the deposit of 700 euros anywhere from 1 week to 1 month!

We started a complaint process through Easyjet for them to refund us and suggested they stop working with them.

Charges in full but no rental to use

Landed in Orlando for our family Disney trip. Flight in was delayed 1hr due to a thunder storm in the area. Had a van rented from auto union and when I called them to pick me up they told me my car rental had been cancelled and my credit card was charged in full. They told me if I had a dispute to take it up with my credit card company.

Worst way to begin a vacation and from the reviews it looks like I am one of many who have been scammed by this company. Please don’t rent from these scammers.

Charged 650 euros plus AWFUL drop off experience

I reserve a car to pick up in Rome. When I arrived, I was told they would not give me the car because I didn’t have an international drivers permit. However, I’ve been to Italy over 30 times and have rented with various Car Rental companies and no one has ever asked me for an international drivers permit.
Instead, I was charged €650 which is almost $800 to get Kasco insurance added to the car. This is way over what I was planning to spend and didn’t have those funds available. I asked if there was anything else I could do and they said no, that they would not give me the car without paying this hefty sum.
Upon returning the car 12 days later, I was told if I arrived after the drop off time even by four minutes that I would be charged €400! My husband and I drove rather recklessly to avoid this fine and when we arrived at the Car Rental return nobody was there!! I called the number and explain no one was there and that we had rushed to get there in time and I was told that someone was on the way. Almost 20 minutes later, nobody was still there. I then called back and was told to leave the key in the dropbox.
This is the absolute worst Car Rental experience I have ever had. I am a season traveler and nothing like this has ever happened to me! Do not rent from this company!!! I saw the poor reviews before renting from them and I should’ve listened because the whole experience was a nightmare!!

Scam

Stay away from this scam company. I rented a car through my Chase travel agency and paid. Shame also on Chase to work with such a company.
At the Istanbul Airport I tried to get the car, but they required the actual passport which I didn't have with me at the time. This might be a policy (but still I have all the other multiple IDs with me) which could be understood for a certain level. I told them I will go get my passport from the hotel which is in the center of the city. They told me that I have to get the car within 1 hour of booking time and I cannot make it by then. So long story short, they took my money, told me that they will re-rent the car someone else, didn't refund me at least prorated, and worst of all left me there without any help or any decent offer to make it work. how is that a good service or a good intention. horrible company, horrible people

I was coerced into paying for insurance I didn't want

My experience with Autounion (via DiscoverCars) at Milan Malpensa Airport was extremely disappointing.

When I arrived to collect the car, the staff told me that my credit card was not acceptable (despite meeting all the requirements), unless I paid an additional €240 for their local insurance. If I refused, they would not give me the car and I would lose my €200 prepaid booking.

This was not a choice — it was coercion.
To make things worse, I asked them to show me the Terms & Conditions that state dual cards are treated as debit cards. They refused to provide any written documentation to support this claim.

I ended up paying the €240 just to avoid being stranded — and ironically, the same card was accepted immediately after the insurance was paid.

DiscoverCars refused to help, saying the insurance was "optional" — but it's not optional if you’re told you can’t get the car otherwise.
This company uses unethical tactics to push extra charges on customers, and I will never rent with them again.

AVOID AT ALL COST

This place doesn’t deserve even a one star. First, they had a lot of hidden fees and want you to have their insurance only unless you have over a 500k policy on your own. Second, the paper work was all in Spanish and prices were in euros when I refused to sign it they ripped the paper out of my hands and said “we don’t provide you service, we take you back to the airport” and that they did lol. Third, they slide through pictures really fast on a little iPad and say here’s the damages now sign the they keypad without actually letting you look at the damages. To top it off when I got back to the airport and booked through an actual rental company at the airport the agent advised us that “autounion” is actually a car dealership that tries to rent out their cars as they are trying to sell them and that’s why they surprise you with a lot of hidden fees.

I highly recommend NOT to book with this company, it’s a scam

SCAM

The payment terminal at the rental shop did not accept my Mastercard - I called my bank who confirmed the card was active and enough funds available. My Mastercard was accepted at all other payment terminals on my 2 weeks trip both before and after.

This trick forced me to pay full insurance at a much higher price than the rental. Completely scam - stay away!

I was really upset about this treatment…

I was really upset about this treatment from the supplier , they were forcing me to take another smaller car and when I refused, they told me the problem with my credit cards which nonsense because they shock when I understand their way, I when back to the airport and get another car from AVIS rental car without any problems on my credit card as they mentioned earlier, another point to the help center which they shall give me alternative options with the same price as my booking was before 4 months but they leave me with no options or pay more than 50% extra and it wasn’t my problem it was from the supplier but they still not believing me, find the attached picture for open the complain as no problem with my credit card as promised from the help center which.

I am sorry to say that, your options from me will not be at my future booking as loosing trust your application and other broker gives better options with more benefits.

as I understood from them they will cancel my booking and they will get benefits. Directly when I left their office I had an WhatsApp SMS as attached below, they will solve my issue but I need to pay the difference which is like fraud and deception amount around 3,800 Euros!

Avoid the company

Avoid at all costs. I booked for a car rental for family holiday to florida (via discover cars). They never honoured the booking which was made month ago and a deposit was paid. I was left stranded with no help (no refund, no alternative). Spoiled my vacation. Very unprofessional. Use a reputatable big name, yes it more expensive but now I have had to pay double because of this company. Do not use.

If I could give a negative score I…

If I could give a negative score I would. I booked Autounion through Expedia as a package deal offered by the company. A few red flags: The rental office is off property housed in a trailer. The shuttle van driver showed up at the airport in a sweaty t-shirt (he is also a mechanic/maintenance guy on the lot). One customer was walking out of the office curing out the staff. I was asked to show proof of insurance which I did (State Farm) with my proof of insurance card. They said they could not accept that card without a review of my insurance policy (who carries their insurance policy with them) and since it was a Saturday my home office was closed. They said I had to purchase their supplemental insurance for $280. I told them to cancel my reservation and Ubered to my hotel and then used the hotel shuttle service for transportation. Avoid Autounion in Orlando at all costs.

⭐ Less than one star

⭐ Less than one star — they don’t deserve even that.
I booked through Expedia with unlimited mileage, but when I arrived to pick up the car, the staff claimed I’d be charged extra just because I have a Florida driver’s license. I showed them my reservation clearly included unlimited mileage, but they refused to honor it. They ruined my vacation and charged whatever they wanted.
Terrible service. Avoid this company at all costs — it’s better to rent from a reputable, big-name rental company than get trapped by this shady, scammy operation. They hide their policies to trick people and force them into paying more.
Shame on you, Auto Union. Be transparent. Respect your customers.
