Very disappointing car rental experience at Frankfurt Airport
I booked an electric vehicle for my trip, but when I arrived at the Frankfurt Airport location, I was given a regular combustion engine car instead – without any explanation or apology. This completely changed my travel plans and added unexpected fuel costs.
To make matters worse, there was no way to contact customer service over the weekend – no phone number available, no one to help at the desk. When I finally reached someone through the hotline during the week, the service was unhelpful and quite rude. I was basically told to “take it or leave it.”
For a large international rental company, I expected better transparency, availability, and customer care. Would not recommend based on this experience.
I had a very disappointing experience…
I had a very disappointing experience with Avis at Marseille Airport.
We booked a car for around €800, but due to a flight delay, we arrived later the same day. Upon arrival, the price had suddenly increased to €3,716, a nearly 5x jump without prior notice. This was completely unreasonable and unmanageable, so we had no choice but to cancel.
The Avis agent on site (code 40410) confirmed the cancellation in writing and assured us we would be refunded. I have now contacted Avis multiple times over more than a week, attaching the signed confirmation, and have received no response at all.
We followed all procedures, arrived on the day of the booking, and had documentation from Avis staff. Yet, Avis has kept our money and is ignoring all communication.
This level of customer service is unacceptable. If I do not receive a response soon, I will be pursuing legal action and reporting this to consumer protection authorities.
Think twice before booking with Avis. If anything goes wrong, you may be left with no support, no accountability, and no refund.
Unresolved €1201. 37 Overcharge by Avis – Trip.com Accountability Required
I booked a car via Trip.com with Avis Germany and fully prepaid for the rental. After the vehicle was exchanged, Avis charged me an extra €1201.37 without any explanation, invoice, or authorization. I contacted both Trip.com and Avis multiple times over two weeks, but no one gave a clear answer or solution.
This is unacceptable and feels like being scammed by two companies passing responsibility between each other. I have filed a complaint to my credit card company and am considering legal action under German and EU consumer protection laws.
If Trip.com or Avis resolves this issue responsibly, I will update this review.

Unfair Charges and No Support – Avoid Avis Germany!
I rented a car from Avis Germany for 4 days, returned it on time, and have all the proof of proper return (photos, documents, timestamped evidence). Despite this, Avis unfairly charged me for 6 days of rental.
I have emailed their customer care team at de.aviscustomercare @ abg.com 5–6 times – no response. I’ve tried calling multiple times – no one ever picks up.
This is absolutely unacceptable for a global company. They are ignoring my complaint and refusing to refund the extra charges.
I’m now preparing to file a formal complaint via the European Consumer Centre and the EU ODR Platform.
Avis Germany – your customer service is terrible, and this feels like a scam. I will never rent from you again. Booking Number: 698670055
Scum of the earth
Scum of the earth. 250 euro for a barely visible scratch on the tire that was almost certainly already there. Never using them again, use EuroCar as they don't rip you off. Better to pay a little bit more upfront than getting ripper off by these con artists
Charged €366 for invisible scratches – never again Avis
Keiner wollte mir seinen Namen nennen.
Dann kam die Rechnung:
366,86 € für zwei kleine Kratzer an den Rädern
– 128,03 € für vorn rechts
– 128,03 € für hinten rechts
– 38,00 € Bearbeitungsgebühr
– 72,80 € „Nutzungsausfall - für WAS???“
(Siehe Bild.)

I rent cars frequently, treat them with great care, and have never had any problems – until this experience with Avis.
I picked up the car at Berlin Airport (BER) in a dark parking garage, no lighting, no staff present, and absolutely no chance to inspect the wheels for scratches. The cars were parked very close together.
When I returned the car, I was told there were two scratches on the wheels – one barely visible, the other almost invisible. I was pressured to sign a damage acknowledgment form, which I thankfully refused to do. The employees checking the car didn’t even work for Avis, but were from a subcontractor. No one would give me their name.
Then came the bill:
€366.86 for two tiny scratches on the wheels:
– €128.03 for the front right
– €128.03 for the rear right
– €38.00 "processing fee"
– €72.80 “loss of use” – for WHAT exactly?!
(See photo.)
They charge you for damage that is barely visible without proper lighting. And the “loss of use” is the cherry on top – as if they’re really going to take the car out of service for this.
Reaching out to Avis support led nowhere – no response, no engagement. Top-notch service, right?
🔴 Never again with Avis.
🔴 Trust destroyed.
🔴 Absolutely no customer care.
Photos and invoice attached – judge for yourself.
UPDATE:
Tried to reach out via social media (Instagram) – no response.
UPDATE 2:
After following up, Avis refunded the “loss of use” charge as a gesture of goodwill.
They haven’t refunded my security…
They haven’t refunded my security deposit, and on top of that, I was overcharged.
Avoid! Overcharged us and had to fight to get back my money
I had booked them via Check24 for 187€. In the end, they charged me 294€ after returning the car. They did not send me a bill and I had to specifically ask to see a cost breakdown. They had charged us for a tank full, claiming that we had not returned it at the same tank level, even though we did. Avoid those scammers at all cost!

I have also first time in my life any issue and conflict with a third company. Namely, with AVIS Germany.
From SIXT I got sometimes even better car than reserved. From AVIS we got Toyota Aygo therefore it made really difficult to reach the desired location on time. I can tell you the whole story if you want.
Very disappointing - not what I am used to from Avis
I am an avid AVIS PREFERRED customer (USA, New Zealand, RSA) and was always very satisfied with everything. But this time in RSA was inacceptable. I arrived at Capetown airport and went straight to Avis. I had reserved a midsize car 11 month in advance. As preferred customer I normally get a free upgrade, this time not. They gave me a polo sedan, and I recognized that this car hasn't had a cruise control, which I need. So I asked for another one, but the staff did not even know what a cruise control is. They let me check their whole fleet (took me almost 2 hours), but all the cars where the same. Since my last visit in november 2024 they had changed their fleet, so no choice anymore. No other well equipped car. I had to accept this polo, which at least had automatic transmission, air condition and power windows. But that was it. No cruise control, no middle arm rest, no parking cameras, no autohold, just manual handbreak. And whenever we opened the trunk, the lid came back and hit me and my wife several times on our heads. Everything was just uncomfortable.
So I had to accept this car, and after 30 minutes of driving I got the message "tire pressure loss". Check at the gas station, message deleted. Next day, same message again. I called the Avis emergency number, where they told me I should immediately come to Avis Stellenbosch, where they will exchange my car. But at the adress they gave me there was no Avis. So with the help of Google and one hour of searching (no Avis sign at the entrance) we finally found the office. But there they said that they are not prepared to exchange my car; they just wanted to delete the error message, which I already did. So they had no car for me. I was told that I should come back in 3 hours; then they will have organized a car from capetown. So in total they stole me half a day of my precious holiday time. And guess what: I did get the exact same poorly equipped car than before. So I gave up, and for the rest of my holidays everytime I entered that car I said to myself: what a sh**** car. And all this despite the fact that I am (correction: was) an Avis Preferred customer. That was the worst experience I ever had with a car rental and the worst car I ever did get.
I got a not required extra charge
I got a not required extra charge, and terrible customer service
I rented a car for almost 2 weeks. The car that I got had an issue with the soap windshield. The reception on the Kansas airport told me that the right person to fix it had left, so he proposed another car. I got another car with the soap. The issue is that, now that I got the bill, it has an added charge of $170. I just called today 21/2/2025 around 8:20, and the person who answered me just told me: check it with the bank, I don't help with that. I asked for a more detailed explanation, and the person just hanged out.

Beware of this happen to you. We will be indirect pay more.
I recently rented a car from the Frankfurt AVIS location in Germany. I was quoted a price of €1718. However, when I made the payment, the amount was converted to a different currency at a high exchange rate.
I am dissatisfied with this practice and would like an explanation. I specifically inquired about paying in Euros at the time of rental and was not given a clear reason why this was not possible.
Please investigate this matter and provide a prompt response

135 Days to refund my deposit
Unacceptable Customer Service – Deposit Refunded After 135 Days!
I rented a car from Avis in Abu Dhabi on August 4th, returned it with no issues, and was assured by their representative that my deposit would be refunded within 40 business days. Instead, I waited a staggering 135 days to receive my money!
This is outrageous and unprofessional for a global car rental company. Despite numerous calls and follow-ups, I was repeatedly met with empty promises and excuses. Avis failed to honor their commitment, causing unnecessary frustration and financial inconvenience for months.
This experience shows a blatant disregard for customers’ time and trust. Such poor service is unacceptable, and I wouldn’t recommend Avis to anyone who values transparency and reliability.
I expect an explanation and a formal apology from Avis for this ordeal. A company of this scale must do better!
My very first time in 55 years of life…
My very first time in 55 years of life posting a negative comment! Horrible Service! They kept my checking account frozen and would charge me 350.00 on Monday. AND ON TUESDAY THEY WOULD FREEZE MY CHECKING ACCOUNT FOR ANOTHER 350.00. WAS NOT ABLE TO GET ANY MONEY. THE WHOLE TIME I RENTED THE CAR. THEN WHEN I TURNED THE CAR IN THEY CHARGE ME 65O.OO BECAUSE THEY CHARGE A WEEK LATE! UNBELIEVABLE SCAMMERS! I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE COMMENT LEFT ABOUT THEM BEING AVIS SCAMMING THEIR CUSTOMER! I WILL WALK TO ETERNITY BEFORE I EVER USED THEM AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One more Avis/Budget car rental fraud !
I just wonder how long this (Avis and Budget) criminal behavior will be tolerated in Norway. After 3 weeks they send you photos, made 2 days after you returned the car, that show you small scratches you should have made and of course you should pay for them. Bad luck for them we made the same photos when we started the rental. Of course they do not check the car at the time you rent the car and they also do not check the car the moment you return the car. The photos they have taken are made 2 days after the return, so a lot could have happend meanwhile. So I think all that proofes that all of this is just a way of defraud and getting to peoples money. Please Avis do not respond to this rating with another one of your lies. No one believes them anymore anyway.
Additional charges and poor customer service
Booked a rental car through their German homepage for Sicily. The offer itself was quite attractive and the car I received matched what I expected. Unfortunately that's where the positive part ends.
The return address for the vehicle was misleading, which caused unnecessary delay and the invoice I received was significantly higher than what Avis initially quoted. Following E-mails were ignored and once I reached someone via phone, they said they would get back to me within a few days, which of course they never did.
TL;DR: Stay away from Avis and stick to more reputable service providers.
Just to say the service I received from…
Just to say the service I received from the operative john queen was excellent. He managed my problem efficiently and got me the car I required.
