Absolutely no need for this rip-off and unethical sales pitch…
Absolutely no need for this rip-off service, especially if you purchase appliances with a decent 3- 5 year warranty. The certificate of insurance will prominently state that you're covered for claims of up to £500 and I was told by sales agents on several occasions that they were covered up to this amount, but you'll have to look for in the terms and conditions (not mentioned in the certificate of insurance) to find that each appliance is depreciated by 20% per year. So If you purchase an appliace for an average of £500 once it's warranty expires after 5 years Big Warranties will only cover repairs up to the value of £163. Given this would barely cover a call out charge in most instances they'll probably just give you that money towards buying a new one.
In my case I had 5 appliances that were all purchased 8 years ago, with a certificate of insurance stating very prominently that they were covered for up to £500 each (a completely meaningless figure) yet because of depreciation they were barely covered up to £100 each, even though at my last renewal they almost doubled the cost of my policy to almost £500!
I made a call as a prospective new customer after finding this out to find out there sales spiel and asked about covering an new appliance purchased for £400 and despite being 3 years old meaning that it would only be covered up to a value of £204 based on their depreciation calculation was repeatedly told it would be covered at "the appliances current market value" (which she was unable to explain to me) "up to the value of £500" which is incredibly misleading. I will be taking this further.
