Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 90 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers frequently reported encountering unexpected extra charges and hidden administrative fees that significantly increased the initial booking costs at the rental desk. Many consumers noted that they were heavily pressured into buying costly local insurance policies even though they had already paid for coverage during the online reservation process. Some reviewers were not happy with the strict documentation rules and rigid policies regarding credit cards and designated primary drivers. Travelers also pointed out that customer support was extremely limited, unhelpful, and completely unresponsive when attempting to resolve disputes or secure refunds for canceled services.

Don’t book your car through Ryanair

Don’t book your car through Ryanair, whilst the price looks reasonable when you book, you can’t (for example) add an extra driver until you get to the airport and that added almost 50% onto the original cost. We also wanted to drive over the border from Spain to Portugal - only €24 apparently, what they didn’t mention is the £50 ‘admin fee’ they also charged us.

The car was fine the pick up was on airport and easy - but they rip you off in the way they build up the charges later.

The stupidity of most reviewers is…

The stupidity of most reviewers is astounding... In most cases, when hiring a car, unless you pay for the hire compainies own zero excess insurance, you will need to leave a large deposit on a CREDIT CARD. Please read that again; CREDIT CARD, not a debit card, or cash!!! Secondly, choosing to take out any third party insurance cover will not remove the need to leave a large deposit on a CREDIT CARD because the hire company don't want the grief of claiming through YOUR third party insurance company. so instaead, YOU cover the cost on YOUR CREDIT CARD, then claim it back from YOUR insurance. Please READ the additonal information section for each company when booking to establish how much deposit they will take. One other thing; Whoever makes the booking is the LEAD DRIVER, don't think you can just turn up and randomly change this, because you can't - ever! It will require a new booking.

Avoid Ryanair car rental like plague

Avoid Ryanair car rental like plague! It’s very tempting to book with them when you’re booking your flights as the price is reasonable as is the insurance. However, on arrival at Malaga airport, it’s virtually impossible to find the car rental offices. When you eventually find them, you are forced to buy an addition insurance product ranging in price from £200-£300, rendering the RentalCover policy bought in conjunction with Ryanair, completely worthless. The car hire firm in Malaga, OK Mobility did not accept the policy bought via Ryanair/RentalCover. I did complain to RentalCover and they refunded my original insurance policy.

Ryanair car rental is scam, don't use !

Ryanair air car rental are time and money waster! Don't recommend to use! What happens, I have booked through Ryanair car rental my car from Malaga airport. I just have the invoice from Rentalcover, I didn't have any another information from Ryanair. When attended the car rental provider, the have asked me for voucher or another information to confirm my booking. Because of i couldn't provide any information, what wasn't given to me from Ryanair, I have t make a new booking for car at same place and pay another money!
After that i have connected to Ryanair by chat and they said me I have to raise a complaint after finishing booking period. Now when I have raised a complaint, they said me so it is too late! One man from the online chat said me as he were very rough, so Ryanair don't refund any money!
I am very confused, but really I am keen to believe to online chat so don't expect refund money from Ryanair.
Also Ryanair should don't expect more to use their service!
Guys, make a booking direct to car hire companies as I did at Malaga airport, it wasn't expensive as Ryanair car rental. Just you can avoid big headaches and inconveniences!
Ryanair car rental is a scam, waster of time and money! Ryanair car rental doesn't accept any complaints, they don't pay attention to the customers, you just can waste time and money!

Car Hire Scam

Thought it would be safe to book car hire through Ryanair, it was a very bad decision. Ended up paying more than double as Firefly/Hertz Faro insisted on extra insurance and used fear and misinformation to up sell. Staff in Faro office were mocking our predicament.

I wish I had read the reviews on here first. From other reviews it seems like there is little point complaining to Ryanair - it seems like they just don't care.

Do not use Ryanair car services

I booked a car to collect 4 passengers and baggage at Malaga airport and take us to Nerja. The booking confirmation states ‘Your driver will monitor the flight status for flight delays and adjust pick up time accordingly’. Before departure were told our flight would be delayed by an hour but the driver is monitoring the flight and we’re flying with the company which is providing the car service. On arriving at Malaga there is no driver to meet us. I call the driver several times but he does not pick up so I call the dispatcher number 4 times and am told to wait in the arrivals hall, the driver will be there in 5 minutes, the driver is on his way. On the last call the dispatcher says he can’t get hold of the driver. All this has wasted an hour of our time and we have to take a local taxi at €119 (£80.41 already paid to Ryanair). I am trying to get a refund but Ryanair now say the driver can only wait up to an hour and our flight arrived 90 minutes late. I’ve booked car services before and they monitor the flight status and arrive to meet accordingly. Ryanair can only be bothered to do this for up to 60 minutes. My booking confirmation says

Our service includes:
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before pick-up
Monitor flight delay
Agent support

Do not use Ryanair car services.

Hired car through Ryanair

Hired car through Ryanair. They conned me into buying insurance through another company separate to the car hire company (was prompted as an extra to add on) but didn’t make it clear this wasn’t the car hire company’s insurance so ended up taking out their insurance as well and effectively paying twice for the car hire insurance. Very misleading.
Also because the hire company are obviously associated with Ryan air the ques for the desk were huge whilst other companies had no que.
Will go direct in future.

Hidden charges

Hidden charges.

I do not recommend booking through Ryanair.

We booked a car from Las Palmas airport in Gran Canaria. The car was not at the airport. We had to wait for a mini bus and then we’re taken to the middle of nowhere and then told my husband could not drive the car unless we paid €9 a day extra. We never chose a main driver, it was just assumed I was the main driver as I booked the flights.

The lady at RecordGo was rude, I called Ryanair - also unhelpful!

We had no idea where we were, the people were intimidating, our children were with us. Ryanair are a disgrace. This was a horrible situation, don’t even consider it.

Everyone at the car hire had an issue of some sort. There is a reason it’s cheaper, no many extras needed in typical Ryanair fashion.

At the time of booking I had no idea they would take €1200 insurance deposit plus €85 for fuel deposit! The car had fully comprehensive insurance with no excess - according to the booking.

Sell insurance and when you come to the…

Sell insurance and when you come to the rental firm, they fool you with another insurance. If Ryanair really cared about its customers, it should press the third-party rental to not be able to sell insurance to fool customers. This is not a nice way to do business.

Awful, and has all the olfactory indications of a scam

Hired a car with 'full protection' insurance from Ryanair. The protection is offered by Ryanair subcontracted to Rental Cover, the car itself by Ryanair subcontracted to Record Go in Mallorca.
On picking up the car, the hire company would not recognise the full protection. We called Ryanair on +441616025405 who confirmed that in some 'special circumstances' that the full protection would not be accepted by a hire company. They could not explain why a compact family car was 'special circumstances' nor why this could happen when the whole arrangement was booked via Ryanair.
Result: had to spend 297 Euros at the car hire desk for the equivalent insurance (it was midnight, two kids under 6, no availability with other hirers, punitive cancellation charges with Ryanair).

In short, avoid all three companies; the arrangement benefits them all, and not the customer, you'll get burned.

Fraudulent

On the original rental company's (Drivalia) failure to provide the booked car, Ryanair Car Hire misleadingly advised on refunding the price difference if an alternative provider is used for the car rental. After cancellation of the original booking and contacting customer service, the compensation was denied and the responsibility was shifted onto Drivalia.

CAREFUL NOW....RYANAIR RIPPING YOU OFF

Ryanair app is double charging for car hire. This has been pointed out many times and they continue to ignore the complaints and close them as 'resolved' despite the problems still existing.
PLEASE make people aware. You can get the same car hire from booking.com (and perhaps other sites) without being RIPPED OFF.

NEVER BOOK WITH RYAN. They will rob you. Booked and paid for a car at Luton…

Booked and paid for a car at Luton airport on April 12th 25. Arrived and gave full paperwork. The computer turned down my reservation with no reason. I was given a REFUND voucher with all the details. I booked with Enterprise same papers - no problem. I am still waiting refund three months later. Booked with Ryan - farmed to Europcar - farmed to Keddy. You get lost in the Bombay oriented system. They now say "After carefully reviewing your case, I truly regret to inform you that we are unable to process a refund for this booking. The reason for this is that the booking falls under our cancellation policy, which does not allow for a refund once the scheduled pick-up time has passed. " This is criminal theft. NEVER BOOK WITH RYAN.

I strongly advise others to avoid Autovia

I strongly advise others to avoid this company!!! I rented a car from Autovia in Italy and was forced to pay for full insurance simply because I didn’t have a "credit card", even though I had a valid debit card. What’s worse? they used the same debit card to charge both the full insurance and the refundable deposit — proving that the "credit card" was just an excuse to force me pay the full insurance!

This practice feels like a scam. They claimed that a credit card was required for the deposit, but then processed everything with my debit card anyway!! — just to force me into buying expensive insurance I didn’t want or need. I had no choice at the counter and was told that if i don't pay the full insurance they will cancel my reservation and stay without a car.

This is misleading, unethical, and clearly designed to exploit travelers. Many others have been trapped the same way. I strongly advise others to avoid this company.

Intentional fraud

The company advertizes on the Ryanair page. They promise you a cheap rental directly at the destination airport. No terms and conditions are displaysd.
If you click on the "book" button, they just immediately charge your card.
And two months later, two days before your departure, they send you message that the rental is not at the airport but 20 drive minutes away. And when you still get the local rental compan, it does everything to deny you a car. For example, it doesn't simply copy your credit card data, but urge you to transfer 1300 Euro deposit to their account.
And when you refuse, you don't get your car. And when you try to get your money back from ryanair carhire, you first face no contact data. And if you still manage to get to them, they simply deny want you the full refund and promise you 20% of your payment, arguing that 80% is a "cancellation fee".
It's unbelievable that Ryanair practices this purely fraudulent business model

DON'T book a rental car through Ryanair…

We booked a rental car through Ryanair for our trip to Alicante which we thought looked like a brilliant deal (£30 for four days) plus a 'certificate of protection' from Rentalcover.com (also promoted on the Ryanair linked website) which was a further £27 which we were led to believe covered us for insurance. On arrival at Alicante Airport we went to pick up the car from Gold Car and were told that we owed a further £174.83 for insurance. The Ryanair car rental site is incredibly misleading and nowhere indicates that there will be any further costs from the car rental company on arrival in the country. Even the Gold Car representative said never book one of their cars through Ryanair because they don't give you the full picture of how much it will cost. That they were experiencing similar situations all the time. If you book directly through Gold Car she said you get a more realistic picture of the full cost. So my advice is ....NEVER hire a car via Ryanair. I have complained to Rentalcover.com saying their cover is not worth the paper it's written on but have heard nothing. The whole set up is very confusing because you have three companies - Ryanair, Rentalcover and Gold car who are all going to blame one of the other partners. Just go direct to the car rental companies is my advice.
