Miserable Stay — Avoid This Hotel

I stayed at The Carlton Hotel and it was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had in the UK.

The room was humid, cramped, and uncomfortable. The lock on the door was dodgy and felt insecure. There was no room service, and I was expected to use the same towels and bed sheets for the entire week. No rubbish collection either — everything just sat in the bin.

The reception staff were rough and rude throughout my stay. The elevator was out of service with no plan to repair it, which meant navigating threadbare, trip‑hazard carpets on the stairwell. The fan provided was not fit for purpose, the windows didn’t open or close properly, and there was no fridge in the room.

The only thing that worked reliably was the WiFi.

Despite all of this, when I asked for a late checkout, they still wanted £15 for just a couple of extra hours. Considering the conditions, that request was insulting.

This hotel should not be marketed as a proper hotel. Avoid.

Stay Away..dont bother

We have just got back from our hotel stay at the Carlton Hotel Great Yarmouth. We were waiting to check in for a few minutes when a man appeared from the side of us and went behind the desk, no name badge he could have been anyone. He then said to take a seat for a couple of minutes as he was just checking, after about 15 mins he then handed over a room key and said it has a king size. We were not quite sure what he meant by this. We got in the lift which jolted, made really odd noises and shot us up then later down, quite scary. We had paid for a sea view, well we were on the side of the building with sort of a seat view but not what we had expected or paid extra for. We tried to run a bath and the shower came on too so had both running, could not change this, the toilet roll holders were missing so this was just on the counter, the window would not stay open so we had to use a drink can to hold the window open. We had no free toiletries as noted on the website. The curtains in the bedroom would not pull properly so had a big gap all night. Also there was a big gap at the bottom of the window and this caused the window to bang all night. The TV was so small, was this an after thought, a laptop screen is bigger. I had 2 very flat pillows in one pillow case instead of a nice puffy pillow. The room door did not close properly, you could move the door when it was locked. I honestly cannot see how they can justify the price charged, it was a nightmare. I dont think we were given the room we had paid for but we're given some rubbish one instead. Also we did not have a walk in shower (my partner recently boke his hip and found getting in the bath very difficult) just an oldy worldy bathroom.
The whole hotel needs alot of TLC and renovation.
I have pictures and video evidence if required. The pictures on the website are not a true reflection on the actual hotel. Surely this is miss selling by the hotel.
This was a last minute booking and surprise birthday treat and the pictures on the website made it look lovely WELL THIS WAS NOT THE CASE.....HOW DISAPPOINTED AND OUT OF POCKET WE FEEL. LIKE WE HAVE BEEN VICTIMS OF A SCAM.

Turkey & Tinsel break - Avoid at all costs!

Recently stayed at this hotel in December on a Turkey & Tinsel break. What can I say except avoid at all costs. The food is dreadful and overcooked or not cooked at all! Under new owners who don't care about quality, only about lining their own pockets. This hotel no longer serves pork products, and no longer serves alcohol. They are still using an out of date website which makes their property look 4 star - it isn't. More like 1 star. The food is mostly inedible - overcooked turkey rashers, and anaemic looking "beef" sausages at breakfast. Chicken breast with BBQ sauce which had dried out and adhered to the chicken. The same "Macedonia" vegetables served up 2 nights running, even stating it was seasonal vegetables! The Christmas dinner was absolutely appalling! No stuffing as advertised. Small cheap shop bought Yorkshire Pudding, cheap cut of Turkey, previously frozen roast potatoes and parsnips, and sloppy broccoli. NO Christmas pudding on the Christmas menu either!! Some of the waiting staff were clueless about who had ordered what, and bringing plates out one at a time. One guest's apple pie with custard was served cold, despite the waitress saying it had been in the microwave. A few weeks prior to our stay, some meals were served up still frozen! This hotel was inspected by the Food Standards Agency in September 2024 receiving a 3 star rating of generally satisfactory - how on earth they achieved this rating is beyond me!
The ground floor to first floor staircase had threadbare carpets creating a slip hazard. No heating in bedrooms except an electric heater which stopped working. Stains on the back of the door in the bathroom. Walk in shower with a narrow access of 431mm. No phones in bedrooms, despite their website showing phones! Receptionist didn't even know the direct dial phone number of the hotel!! Website also shows a well stocked bar - not anymore it isn't!
A very loud banging noise at 0518am one morning lasting 20 minutes waking guests up.
Rooms are no longer serviced during your stay, so if you run out of loo roll then you have to ask reception and carry it to your room yourself! The loo roll was cheap thin rubbish too.
Please don't stay here. It really is a dreadful place.
