Chantry Vets has been providing veterinary care to the pets of West Yorkshire for more than 60 years. Initially based in Wakefield Town Centre, we have expanded into one of the area’s largest Small Animal practices. We have 7 branches located across West Yorkshire in Wakefield, Middleton, Castleford, Pontefract, Normanton & Great Houghton. Our branches are supported by our main Hospital at Brindley Way in Wakefield. We initially moved from our headquarters at Gills Yard, Wakefield, to Alverthorpe in 2012, but later outgrew this site also. We opened our flagship purpose-built hospital with state-of-the-art facilities in March 2022 to provide greater levels of service to our customers and their beloved pets. Our Gills Yard and Alverthorpe surgeries now provide first-opinion services to the local community in easily accessible locations. The practice gained hospital status in 2013; the highest level of accreditation available from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Every four years the practice undergoes rigorous inspections across all our premises.

Outstanding

Outstanding! Every part of my experience was amazing. From the moment I walked through the doors I was made to feel like my gorgeous dog was the most important animal in the hospital! He was rushed from Warrington where I live with IVDD as no hospital round us had space for him. They were fantastic and told me to get him there asap! From the minute I left him they treated him like their own. He was rushed through and at that point I didn’t know if he would live or walk again, I was a mess. The staff went above and beyond making sure I was reassured through out. The paper work was all the organised and sorted for me ready for signing it was done respectfully and professionally. As I drove away leaving my dog in their hands I felt confident they would do all they could. 4 days later I picked him up and he was wagging his tail and trying to walk already, the nurses all came to say goodbye and wish us well and I could tell my dog loved them all! We had to go for physio sessions and take home lots of exercises for our dog to do which I would definitely say was a huge contributing factor to him walking again and gaining so much strength. Every session he would get excited in the car knowing where he was going and knowing who he was going to see! Every aspect of his journey was impeccable and I couldn’t fault it. If anyone has a dog suffering with IVDD I would 100% recommend making the journey if you don’t live nearby. Unfortunately for us he ended up having a second IVDD issue further down his back 9 months later we rang and they were absolutely amazing again not only telling us to get straight down to them they also remembered him! This cheered me up and made the second time so much easier. They managed expectations saying he could take longer to heal but in true Hugo fashion he bounced back faster than before. I picked him up with tears of happiness, honestly couldn’t believe they had fixed my dog again. I wouldn’t use another veterinary practice ever again. I felt like my dog was given the VIP treatment as well as myself, we were in constant contact with the vet and nursing staff and cannot thank them enough each and every one of them. From the receptionists who made us feel welcome in such a horrendous situation. To the vets and nurses for their care and compassion. The physio who exhausted us with exercise regimes that got him walking, running, and back to health, stronger than before, he wouldn’t be where he is now without that continued care. To the management team who help with the finances and contacting the insurance companies. I will never be able to thank them enough for giving me my gorgeous Hugo back fixed and bouncier than ever!

19 year old cat

The staff at this vet’s are lovely and always put my mind at ease. I know I can call and ask questions and they will advise accordingly, always very promptly and with what’s best in mind for my precious pet. My cat was 19 years old and to have someone on hand to ask questions those last few months was invaluable and something I will always appreciate. Would definitely recommend! 5 starts!

We have used Chantry Vets for the care…

We have used Chantry Vets for the care of our cats. One in particular was Jake who was a rescue cat. We started fostering Jake and then adopted him, he came with a number of health issues and Chantry have always been there for us offering the best advice and treatments. Chantry staff have always shown compassion, are very caring and always consider what is the best option for you and your pet. Jake is now somewhere over that Rainbow Bridge having fun, the care and attention during the month he was very poorly was the best he could have had. I have no hesitation in recommending Chantry Vets for the care of your pets.

Chantry vets helped when my friend had…

Chantry vets helped when my friend had taken on 3 stray cats that needed help. They needed surgery and most private vet practices said it had to be done by a referral practices as it was complex, which would have costs thousands but chantry were able to do the surgery on all 3 cats and help.

Exceptional Service

One of my cats recently passed away as a result of congenital heart disease, at the age of 4. Chantry were fantastic throughout the whole process:

From rushing him into the Out of Hours emergency service, the on duty vet was very clear communicating what issues he was facing at that moment in time, prognosis moving forward and the expected cost. Everyone was extremely compassionate and thoughtful throughout the whole process in a time of shock, when as a pet parent, you most definitely aren't thinking clearly.

Unfortunately we had to make the decision to let him go after a stay overnight, and again, nothing but love for the team for the care and sensitivity that was shown.

They offer a direct insurance claim service which was very helpful during such a traumatic time, allowing you the option of not having to deal with (I'm sure in most people's experiences) what can be challenging insurance companies.

We took them up on their cremation service and received our boy back very timely.

His legacy lives on though, as due to recent advances in the industry, they now offer a blood test to all clients to check for his condition. Which as he has a sister was very welcome in putting my mind at ease, when faced with the prospect of potentially going through this again.

Rest in peace Kuma, and thank you Chantry.

Brilliant Vets

I recently had to bring my dog Bruce in for an appointment due to his skin issues. The Vet I saw was brilliant, very knowledgeable and discussed all possible options. The nurses handled Bruce with care as he can be an anxious boy! Very happy customer will definitely return.

I’ve taken almost all the pets I’ve had over the years to Chantry and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. I’ve always found the staff to be helpful, friendly and knowledgable and, above all else, have never doubted their genuine love and compassion for the animals they treat. I went through a particularly tough time with my cat, who I sadly lost to an incurable tumour, very recently, and they were fantastic throughout. Thank you Team Chantry

Cat friendly practice

Brought my cat for microchipping. She was treated kindly and the staff made sure she was not stressed. She was given some treats to distract her whilst the chip was implanted. They allowed Luna to relax before starting and I felt at ease.

Best vets in Yorkshire

I have been taking my pets to Chantry for a long time and have recently registered a new pet with them. The vets I take my dogs to see are always very kind, compassionate and thorough with their investigations and treatment plans. I wouldn't want to take my animals anywhere else.

Took my dog to chantry vets in…

Took my dog to chantry vets in Wakefield the brindley way hospital. My dog had unfortunately reached the end of her life. That were all so compassionate and everyone was very helpful and so so caring I can not fault these at all. Received a beautiful card with their condolences and some flowers seeds to plant in remembrance of my Jess. I choose to have her cremated and on the day she was ready to collect I was absolutely outstanded by the item I received I was only expecting her ashes. I opted to a scatter tube due to cost but the tube is nicely designed I also received a small bottle with some of my pooches fur in and plaster of Paris paw print and a certificate. I am very happy with the service that they had been provided. They really took care of my pooch which I can not be more grateful for. I would 💯 recommend these. Thank you chantry vets your service is very much appreciated.

Diabetes Misdiagnosis

My recent experience of Chantry Vets.

Just before Christmas, Chantry misdiagnosed my 7 year old Maine Coon with diabetes and started a course of insulin injections. This was based on a single blood test from a machine which was later found to be faulty, luckily only two days into insulin injections. Once the vet discovered his error, he and the nurses acted quickly to stop my cat receiving any further dangerous injections. I followed the Practice's complaints procedure via Emily, and taking out the Christmas break, I received a response three weeks later which confirmed they had misdiagnosed based on a single faulty reading. I understand they are now going to change their diabetes protocol to do additional tests before confirming diabetes. The only real communications, aside from complaint receipt acknowledgement, from the 16th December (diagnosis) to the 16th January (complaint response) was with the vet who very sadly had to put my cat down on boxing day (possibly heart failure related). I did get a cold text message asking for payment (insulin treatment was refunded) before cremation services and complaint response had been completed. Given this was in the last two weeks of my cats life, we could have all done without the extra stress of the misdiagnosis.

This is just my experience which was pretty awful to be honest. My complaint has been responded to by Chantry and so is concluded as far as I'm concerned.
If and when I do get another pet, I'm not sure I would trust Chantry again.
