I am extremely disappointed in Code Kingdoms. I do not believe any of the positive reviews at this point. We purchased a full year subscription, then nothing on the website worked for us on any device or operating system (iPad, Android phone, Windows PC). I have attempted 4 times to get in contact with the support team over 4 days and there has been no response. I have requested a refund of which there has been no response. Do not purchase this!

Good tutorials, but prepare to get frustrated

The actual coding tutorials and format is great. However trying to link the roblox studio with the Code Kingdoms website is an utter nightmare. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. No rhyme nor reason. Infuriating. Each time I sit my kids down to do a module it's pot luck whether Roblox Studio will link with the website tutorial or not. If I have to spend 15 minutes logging in and out, constantly re-downloading the rbxl file and hoping it will link it really loses its shine and the kids tune out and go and do something else. Pretty much given up as it's so infuriating.

If that could be fixed then this might be a great bit of kit.

Hi there, thanks for getting in touch - sorry to hear you're having trouble!

If you message our customer support team they will work with you to solve your coding problem.

Here are some of our top tips for debugging your code so you can get back to the fun.

Checking With Lara 👩. Watch the videos again to see how Lara writes the code. Sometimes the code can be tricky and checking it over often solves the problem. You can use the hints to see what code changes are expected. If you’re really stuck, there is a skip button you can use. It is set to the current step and will set the code to exactly what it is within the video.

Tick Off the Chapter. Code differences can sometimes mean that your code won’t run correctly. The chapter will only tick off if everything has been completed the same as the video, so if the editor says you’re still on a previous chapter, click the hint button to check and see what you need to add or change to complete it 😎.

Minor Differences. Sometimes the steps don’t tick off if there are minor differences that don’t affect the behaviour of the code - for example, spelling or punctuation differences when naming variables. We’re working to resolve these so the steps always tick off correctly - check out the hints to see if there’s anything you need to change.

Read Your Error Messages. Getting any error messages in your project? Don't panic - the code editor will tell you which file is to blame, and can highlight lines that might be wrong. Make sure you check the file very carefully for anything that might be different to the video. Read the error message carefully - it'll usually be able to tell you what exactly is wrong (for instance, using the wrong type in a function). If you don't understand your error messages at all and you're completely stuck, do send it over to us as a screenshot and we can help you work out what's up 😀

You have to know how to code AND sit with your kid 100% of the time for this to maybe work.

Unless you know code and you have time to sit with your kid, this is probably not for you. I'm in the PST and "support" only happens around 3am. Unlike what other reviews claimed, their support is not live. I spent 3 hours from 3am to 6am to try to troubleshoot connection issues 2 days ago, and now it's still not resolved, which means my kid had been working with a broken platform that doesn't connect reliably to Roblox Studio. The CK platform is a mess. "Code blocks" don't work the way they show on the videos, and support staff just told my kid to hard code stuff in. Kids are also expected to debug like a high schooler with an instructor, otherwise none of their games would work if they make a tiny mistake and you don't have time to sit with them and debug with them. The Code Kingdoms UI is a mess, too--the video control overlay covers up the PnP button and only if you are using certain browser and know how to resize windows can you barely reach the PnP button. Anyway, your kid may give up coding altogether because it's impossible for a beginner to get games to works on Code Kingdoms... unless, of course, you sit with them every step of the way to make it work--which is not why I tried to use a platform like Code Kingdoms.

Our kids used CK for over a year and dis quite a lot of the projects.
When they found some other interests I contacted them to cancel that were fantastic. They are a really customer focused company and will be the first place I turn when our kids want to code again (which they undoubtedly will).

Zero help

I am extremely disappointed with the customer service and lack of communication from Code Kingdoms. My son spends lots of time trying to get an answer during the coding process but got zero answer. He worked on 10+ projects in total but only one works. When he get stuck, he could not get any help to help me continue. The representative, Ross, that I have been trying to communicate with has been ZERO help in getting this simple problem fixed. Waste of kid's time and making parents stressful.

I read reviews before purchase now I doubt if those good reviews are real.

Hello Ling,

Sorry to hear about your experience. If you could reach out to our support services I can see what the status of your tickets are and help resolve them. I couldn't find any tickets with the details provided to Trustpilot.

We would be happy to refund your account and provide a free credit to continue coding without cost.

As for receiving no reply, can you login to his account and check the Intercom support system messages. You may already have your response there. We have no unanswered tickets on the system and the median response time is currently 18 minutes.

Brilliant portal with great customer service

My child learnt a huge amount about coding through Code Kingdoms. I also really valued the humans behind the portal who were really quick to respond when my child needed support and equally were very helpful at sorting a billing issue I had. Great customer service and an incredibly educational product. Well done

Very Beginner Friendly

TD;DR at the end.

The videos are well put together and very easy to understand for young new programmers. The block coding structure is very beginner friendly, but not very useful for learning syntax. I recommend turning on 'Epic Mode' and taking a look at the actual structure of java code and using epic mode as much as possible.
I found coding with code kingdoms a lot of fun, but it was hard to get good support when things went wrong. Things didn't normally go wrong but I found it difficult to get help when they did.
TL;DR - Very good and beginner friendly. Lots of fun. Mediocre support team. Overall would recommend :)

I have just bought this for my son

I have just bought this for my son. I'm no computer expert and so I'm relying on Code Kingdoms to give us support. I have followed the instructions, downloaded the Java version of Minecraft and then splat. Doesn't work - because they don't support the most recent version of minecraft. So you have to use a previous version - fine - swapped to the previous version and splat - I get 'Unable to locate the Java runtime'. So the net result is that we haven't even been able to start the first lesson and the amazing support advertised has a response turnaround of about 12 hours. Perhaps its my fault, I don't know but please have the support in place for learners. If you're going to do this guys, do it properly. If we don't get the support we need then I'm going to get my money back.

Hello James.

I hope you could reconsider your review in this case. I looked up your support query and you received a response to your first request within 30 minutes. Later that day you submitted several other messages to support where the median response time was less than 60 seconds.

It turns out the issue you had was with Minecraft itself and not our product. Although another company (Microsoft) is responsible for that support, our team member did attempt to help resolve the issue with your computer. In the end we issued a refund as requested and gave you free access to our Roblox product as we hoped that would not have the same technical issues you faced launching Minecraft.

No risk, give it a try

I liked the product and thought the learning style was really good. Unfortunately it wasn't for my son so we took advantage of the money back guarantee which was processed without an issue.

Great Idea Poor Implementation

Context: I am a CTO and have been developing Java for over 20 years. My son is a massive minecraft fan and rather than me teach him raw java i thought this would be a great way to get him coding. However there are too many issues with this to make it truly effective. The objective would be to get from block coding to raw Java and to mod minecraft alone. Here is why this is not possible
1. There are too many bugs - time and time again the chapters fail to update the XP scores or report that the code is correct - means that you cannot carry on even though the code is correct - simple answer would be is to highlight whats wrong - easily done in Java but they have not done that leaving you hanging
2. Contact support (mostly on a weekend or evening outside working / school hours) - support is very slow and really really useless - sure they are happy, polite and pleasant but I want support that actually solves the problem, so far 3 issues raised none solved
3. The server specs are clearly not applicable for the games - they advertise upto 25 people or even 12 on a server, try and get more than 6 and you will a heavy lag on the Minecraft client simply indicating the hardware (or virtual machines) in the background are no where near powerful enough to support the advertised spec.
4. Continued problems with the themes and mods not loading.
5. Slow updates - reload the code up to the server and it reports its done, attempt to connect and its clear the server is still loading, even sometimes the server button remains red and not green - refresh the browser and the button goes green - buggy front end - which just adds to the issues that make this experience not a great one for children who take one step forward and a step back and after so many issue just end up disengaged.
At the end of the day its a great idea and the videos and engagement are great but unless you get to the final stage of raw java then the journey is pointless in the opinion of a CTO who hires java developers.
The reason I am writing this is because 3 times I have asked for help and 3 times they have failed to sort the problem out promptly - children will do extra work on evenings and weekends - have support at those times - its no good waiting hours for a response.
What could have been a great experience is not and for anyone who doesnt know coding I get that this would be so frustrating. A shame.

Thank you for your feedback here.

I understand your frustrations with the coding experience and why your child was becoming disengaged with the incorrect code for their project. We will work on improving the system to hopefully make things clearer so difficult courses can be better understood.

On the support response times, I looked into this and your median response time was less than 5 minutes for each ticket you raised. Our team did their best to respond quickly to you and this was on a weekend with a software engineer who provided technical support for your child.

It's OK that you didn't cancel in time, although we send a reminder email 7 days before renewal these emails often go to spam and we don't think our customers should pay for something they don't see.
