We knew we were buying a used car and did not expect perfection. What we did expect was honesty and transparency. Unfortunately, that is not what we experienced with Driveway.
The biggest issue: Driveway sent us a vehicle with significant front-end damage that was never properly disclosed. The listing photos and a very brief, poor-quality walkaround video failed to show multiple cracks in the front bumper and a broken grill. This is not a minor cosmetic flaw — the entire bumper and grill will need to be replaced, which will likely cost $2,000–$3,000.
To be fair, there were a few positives. Dominique Moungle at the dealership was polite, professional, and very helpful throughout the process. Sean from Driveway was also professional and even called us personally on a Sunday to update us on the vehicle during transport. The car also arrived at the local dealership faster than expected, taking only about five days to ship from Texas to Idaho.
Unfortunately, the rest of the experience raised several serious concerns.
Driveway required a $500 deposit to reserve the vehicle, but their payment portal repeatedly failed and produced security warnings about being an unsecured site. Multiple cards were declined even though our banks confirmed there were no issues. We were eventually told not to worry about it and that the deposit would simply be rolled into the final payment when we wired the full purchase price.
The dealership also promised a 180-point inspection but shipped the vehicle before any inspection took place. Once the car shipped, we were automatically locked into a non-refundable $2,200 shipping fee. Even more concerning, the vehicle was shipped before we had wired payment.
Our Driveway representative, Kierra, made the process far more difficult than it needed to be. She repeatedly sent time-sensitive requests at the end of her shift and then would not respond to our replies for days. Several promises she made were later denied or reversed.
After wiring the full purchase price of the car, we received no confirmation for several days, which was extremely concerning given the amount of money involved. Later, the dealership required additional paperwork with notarized signatures. We completed and returned the paperwork within two hours, but it sat for several days before we were told the vehicle would not be released until we paid the $500 deposit we had previously been told was already included in the purchase price.
Because the payment portal still would not work, we were told to wire another $500 immediately in order to take possession of the car. That deposit was never refunded or credited toward the purchase price as promised.
Driveway also originally told us the vehicle would be delivered to our home, but we were later required to pick it up at the dealership instead.
When we finally saw the vehicle in person, the undisclosed damage was immediately obvious: a cracked front bumper, broken grill, and multiple scratches on the driver’s door — not just the “single scratch” we had been told about. The rear passenger fender also appears to have been re-clear-coated and the rear spoiler replaced, suggesting prior damage that was never disclosed.
We reported the damage immediately. However, the complaint process was repeatedly delayed, and just after Driveway’s 7-day trial period expired our claim was denied because the vehicle was sold “as is.”
There were also issues with the temporary out-of-state tag. By the time we received the vehicle, two weeks had already passed on the temporary tag and we were told registration could take several more weeks.
We do like the car itself and had been searching for this rare model for a long time. However, the overall experience was stressful, disorganized, and far from transparent. Because of the undisclosed damage and the way these issues were handled, we would not purchase another vehicle through Driveway and would not recommend them to others.
