It was a normal rental experience until…

It was a normal rental experience until the company made aggressive damage claims on the car.

After returning the vehicle, a representative said they had discovered damages on the vehicle and sent an invoice for over 100 euros. I disputed this charge, which prompted them to increase the charges to over 950 euros. The vehicle was returned in October and I received an invoice for the newly "discovered" damages in January.

For my work I routinely rent cars for travel, and in over 6 years of renting vehicles this is the only company that has behaved this way.

If you do choose to rent with this company, be sure to photograph even the undercarriage of the vehicle to protect yourself from claims of damage.

Not so nice

all good with the people, the car, the pick-up and drop off. even the invoices for toll road went very well. BUT for some magic reasons I managed to miss one parking payment for 150NOK in Bergen airport. They should just forward the email with the invoice to me like all the other invoices. But no: they choose to pay that on my behalf and invoice me almost 1000NOK. There are a lot of good well behaving people there but this is a sh**ty COMPANY behavior. This was my last car with them.

A racist company that well treat you and give you service according to your skin color.

This experience happened in the summer of 2016, however, it has stuck with me till this day and I keep thinking about it.

Note: I have had a much more pleasant experience with other car rental businesses, however, this one left me with an experience that made me feel less worth as a human being so I finally have decided to leave a review of my experience.

I hope you avoid this company at all cost since all customers are not treated equally and treated according to their skin colour ( based on my experience)

I saw Europcar Oslo had cars available on their website but due to me already being in the city center I decided to walk to their counter and ask if they had cars available for the fallowing day, I received a very rude no so I left the counter feeling a bit uncomfortable and slightly confused since their website had cars available for renting between the days I was interested in.

I decided instead to book a car through their website the same day for next day pickup. (keep in mind that I really needed a car to rent for a small last minute trip so I was desperate)
When I arrived the fallowing day (with different and formal clothes the same guys were at the counter and of course they had cars available . I was told the car I booked online (an Audi A3) was not available and that I had to settle for a car that was of less quality (typical tactic when they don't want you to have a their quality cars)

I kindly agreed since I did not want to argue and be the bigger person. Nevertheless, while waiting for my car I had a chat with one of the staff and we became friendly and after a few laughs he suddenly sad the car I initially booked was available. I received the car and thanked him.
I work with human rights issues so if was very easy for me to identify why they in the first place lied to me and when I booked the car through their website they offered me another car from the one I initially booked.

In conclusion, and based in my experience, this company is racist and I truly believe the staff acted on orders so I do not blame them.

I needed to get this out of my chest since it stuck with me for all this time and I still feel ashamed and bad from the experience.

This is in response to the review below…

This is in response to the review below UPDATE 23.03.20
So I have received a response from ECRCS that they can't do anything about it and it is our responsibility to check the car in detail.
First of all the car was frozen and we did not see any damage , secondly the dent is smaller than a water droplet so they should have provided a magnifying glass !
Europcar Tromso has never sent us an Invoice by post or email and now we have received a letter from Kredinorn ( I guess they sold it to debt collectors ) asking for money with interests.

How can this be allowed for a company to extort money in this way, can we report to a police in Norway or something ?
I am not sure where to go with this anymore... this company should be investigated and shut down.

PC ( review below ) Please contact me via moniaolo on instagram ( balloon icon) , I am based in UK and wondered if we could hire perhaps someone to resolve this matter.

Your insurers are involved but they are not getting anywhere with this !!

Unscrupulous Scammers - Avoid at all cost!!!

AVOID EUROPCAR NORWAY (TROMSO) AT ALL COSTS, DONT USE EVEN IF THEY OFFER YOU A FREE RENTAL.

I rented a car with this company in Tromso in FEb 2020 and I wish I had read the recent posts in here before using them.

Poor experience started from point of arrival in Tromso. Despite having informed the pickup desk of delay with flight, the attendant had locked the place away and calls to the on-call number kept going to voicemail. This despite charging me extra for out of hours pickup. Ultimately after almost 30 mins of waiting someone picked the VM and turned up at the pickup desk. Rest of the check-in was smooth but I was given a diagram of the car showing no damage which I took to mean that no major or obvious damage.

I did a visual check all around the car and since I didnt spot any obvious damage, I drove off. After dropping the car off after my trip and arriving home I got a damage report from them showing a 2mm or smaller paint chip on the front bumper. They provided me with an invoice of NOK9351 (approx £775) which was 90% in norwegian. When I asked them to provide the same in english, there was no response. When I challenged them on the damage itself as the images provided in the damage report are not from the drop-off location but from a well lit garage after a wash. This implies the car was moved after drop-off, given a wash and then closely scrutinized to locate damage points which can be put on a damage report to claim exorbitant repair charges.

When I appealed the charge and refused to accept the damage report and hence the charge, I was offered a 20% discount on the claimed repair charge which has been flatly refused.

I have now informed them that the matter will be taken up with the ECRCS and if required with a suitable small claims court and any charge will be rigourously defended. While the decision of ECRCS is pending, I feel I should warn anyone searching for car hire in Norway and especially in Tromso, to avoid this company like the plague. Whatever few pennies you save on the rental compared with some other rental company will cost you in stress and repair charges while dealing with this scam of a company that has a primary goal of making twice the amount of the rental charge through unscrupulous repair charges.

I shall update this post in due course with the result of the ECRCS appeal.

EUROPCAR TROMSO - shame on you SCAMMERS!!!

I wish I have read the reviews here before renting with Europcar Tromso, they are trying to charge us 9500 NOK for a 5mm (not cm) dent that we have not made on already damaged door at the bottom by someone else!
Nobody at the car park on pick up or drop off and we got an email when we landed back home with pictures from a car wash of a hardly visible dent marked with blue pen and good lighting.
We had some pictures too but they claim it is not the same place, ours are from a slightly different angle and at approx 1pm in December. The last 2months we must have dealt with 10different people each one just pushing standard forms and emails !
Firstly they claimed it was the dent and scratch and after few more emails with detailed photos and no sign of scratch they admitted it was dent only.
The attached letter sent on original email was with a description of a different damage , scratch on a front bumper! It must have been from a previous customer. They are so busy with all these scams they can’t be bothered to change the descriptions anymore. They admitted it was an oversight !
I think they receive some sort of commissions for all these scams !
They did not charge the card but will be sending an invoice, at some point they offered 25% and day later 35% discount !!! I told them this matter will go further and we are not bartering with dishonest company that is trying to extort money from us for something we haven’t done.
We had full insurance in this instance and they are dealing with this now, this matter is under dispute.
We rent cars 4-5 times a year around the World and this is our first issue with car hire company.
Out of all the places in the World , in Norway , who would have thought !!
Do not use Europcar in Tromso! You have been warned ! There are many people who have been conned by this dishonest company. They should be investigated and shut down!

EUROPCAR IMOPLITE OBSESSED IRANIAN…

EUROPCAR IMOPLITE OBSESSED IRANIAN MANAGER
Had a 3 days business trip to Noeway. Arrived and headed to the ..... Europcar office to get my reserved car in Oslo Gardermoen airport.
At first everything seemed to be OK, a Norwegian blond young girl was attending me with smile and patience, we came to the payment and I had only Google Pay and not the creditcard fisically on me. The girl then started to type my credit card and solve the issue that suddenly a dark haired girl next to her said NO, we don't accept it. I asked how come and she on a very arrogant tone answered " I'm the manager and I decide " with my broncky voice which I could bearly speak, tired to have a dialog and tell her that G pay is the safest number one in the world etc. But she arrogantly was so OBSESSED of repeating that she is the manager . She went bach behind the office and bach again in a second asking me to show her the photo of the creditcard and then my passport etc. At once she saw my Iranian nationality started to speak our mother tongue, as she was rough and rude, I told her to speak the common Norwegian language due to let everyone in the office know what she says and her rudely tone. But she kept talking in Farsi and in about 1 min., more than 4 times repeated that she is the manager and she decides. Well, congratulations to her and her bosses who have hired her. I am now on my way back to the airport and got time to read other's reviews, obviously noticed that it was not only me, My psychological experience is that the ugly people at least try to be nice but this time was an exception.

The worst renting experience of my life

My best advice: you should never rented a car from this company!

When I brought the car back there was no damage. Nobody looked to my car and I left. Then, I received an email after the car has been moved and they send me a picture of a scratch that I am NOT responsible of. The insurance with extra coverage didn't want to pay for it because I already give back the car.

I lost 600$ CAN because of them!

The service was awful. They interrupted me when I was talking, they told me they will end the conversation without listening to me. They were stuberned to not help me.

In conclusion, they were rude, impolite and they stoled me 600$ !

Last advice: take a lot of pictures before and after giving back the car.

The worst rental experience I had

The worst rental experience I had
I rented a car for our family trip in Norway. The car was fine and the staff was nice. However, I had a small scratch that I told them about and when I got home I received a hefty fine of 19,000 NOK. I had other issues with parking ticket that I couldn't pay because I didn't have Norwegian address. The 600 NOK fine turns out to be 1460 NOK after administration fees and the letter already arrived with an invoice past due date. I rented cars in many places but never saw such penalties.

Europcar (Interrent): a frustrating experience

The car I hired last June for a 12-days trip of over 1500km was brandnew. Shortly after driving away from the Gardermoen airport (Norway) there was an alarm "Loss of pressure detected". I checked the tyres, they looked OK. I phoned the Gardermoen office. "The alarm could indicate that a tyre was punctured. But if the car was driving fine, nothing to worry about, most probably a false alarm, just needs a reset, often happens with brandnew cars" I was told. Although the tyres showed no signs of whatever damage, this alarm kept coming up during the rest of the trip.

When I returned the car I again mentioned the alarm. No apologies were made for the inconvenience caused by the alarm. I expected the staff to come and establish that the alarm indeed was a false one  and not caused by anything else. Much to my surprise the staff in the office was not inclined to make an end-of-hire control. Till today I am angry with myself for not having been more assertive and less trustful then. I should not have accepted this attitude, but I did... unfortunately. And so no control was made in my presence.

The next day I received a mail from Europcar informing that "a new damage was found being a punctured tire(sic) ". Was added to the mail: pictures taken in another place than where I left the car. One (it is a pity I cannot insert the picture here) showed only the head of a bolt (?) protruding from a groove of a frontwheel tyre. According to Europcar this object triggered the alarm (so on the first day of the rental!). If that is the case this object has been over a million times in contact with the road. Why then does this object not show the wear-and-tear one normally might expect?

That the provided evidence is questionable because not showing an actual damage, that I had driven about 1500 km without seeing or hearing any problem related to the tyres gave me the  unpleasant feeling of having been treated in an unfair way.

A discussion started: I declined the claim again and again. They maintained it, waving the contract I signed.

In August I filed a complaint against Europcar at ECRCS (European Car Rental Conciliation Service) because Europcar: "1) was not complying  with the ECRCS charter that Europcar subscribes namely “provide to its customers  the opportunity to inspect the car when it is returned at the end of the rental and agree on the condition", and 2. for initiating a claim for a damage based on evidence established  after the car was moved under their responsability").Their answer to 1) "We are of the view that it is the customers responsibility to ensure the vehicle is inspected in their presence and that if there is any pre-existing damage it is noted on the rental agreement before the rental takes place."and to 2):"Whilst we appreciate the cause of the damage cannot be confirmed the documented evidence provided shows that there was new damage identified when the vehicle was returned which had not been marked as pre-existing. Europcar do (sic) not take any position on when, how, or by whom the damage was inflicted."

I was very disappointed with this reaction of ECRCS.

A few days later I got an invoice (for NOK905) without justifying attachments (!) for the "repair charge". Which I declined once more.

Beginning of October I received a letter from Kredinor, a collection agency. To avoid further escalation I gave in and paid the bill mentioning that this did not mean that I accepted the liability.

If Europcar (Interrent) would have had the same damage policy as Europcar (Belgium) I believe above discussions would not have taken place.

Next time I will look for a rental company that does its best to avoid that a customer will get the feeling of having been framed, a company that strives for a good reputation rather than for a quickwin at the expense of a customer, a company that does not initiate claims on questionable evidence, a company that uses an "end of hire" definition that is not detrimental to the consumer.

I plan to file a complaint with the EEC (European Consumer Centre Belgium) for the inconsistencies in Europcar's contracts and for unfair treatment.

Additional charge

I hired a car in Gardermoen airport - prepaid. The car was returned a few minutes too late according to europcar timestamp. There was some waiting time in the office, no europcar staff at the parking place. So I was back in the airport in time, but the key was returned a few minutes too late - and I was charged for one additional day. Even though europcar might be right in this additional charge due to the contract, I think it’s a very bad way to treat customers. I will not use europcar again and I can’t recommend europcar to anyone.
