A down to earth review from a long term member

I see a lot of poor reviews on this site, but one has to ask why these people had a bad experience.

expat.com is a 'no nonesense' site with strict rules.

Free advertising is available in dedicated sections but not allowed on the open forums.

Defamaton gets a post removed, and can trigger a ban. Bans are most common with members who join to defame a company. The site commonly gets accused of being something to do with that company, but never is.

Trolling is looked at in a dim light, but it generally takes a while before a member sees themselved banned.

Anything to do with drugs, prostitution, and/or illegal activities sees an instant ban.

Moving to the positive.

A lot of potential expats ask about job and other scams. The site has an informal team of scambusters who advise on these matters. It also has experienced local expats who help with a lot of handy info for potential and new expats

At the end of the day, if you are looking for a serious site, expat.com is for you

Waste of time

Waste of time! Perfectly normal adverts and posts removed without rhyme or reason. It seems that moderators can't understand English so they just remove things. There is no customer service. Don't bother wasting your time. Use other forums. Much better!

Discrimination at Expat.com Seems Rampant

A friend and I attempted to post simple bike sale ads identical to currently running ads and we both had them rejected several times. As he is a physician and I am an international journalist, we were quite shocked by rather abrupt rude rejections of the ads. This was a first for both of us.

Again, since he is a well known physician and I am a journalist with similar education and we both wrote ads according to Expat guidelines and almost identical to currently running ads on Expat.

I discussed this with my friend who is a former Supreme Court Justice and she suggested I review the organization since these ads were most likely rejected by someone lacking education and experience in both working with the public and advertising. During the past 30 years, of dinners in the homes of Supreme Court Justices worldwide--who have no interest in discrimination of any kind--I have never seen this lack of judgment.

I have been participating in this…

I have been participating in this website for almost 10 years and I think that this website is interesting to exchange information between expats if one goes directly to the point as long as they know and can separate the grain from the chaff.

As in any other website open to the public in general, everyone has space on it and we all know what happens when everyone can participate.

In any case, and although the freedom of speech, (or of the press) should be an inalienable right, there are opinions or advice that should be censored and their authors banned because racism, intolerance, unwanted advertising and illegal or dangerous advice should not be allowed under the protection of freedom of expression.

As some others have pointed out I think that this site has a flaw because allows to join locals who, in some forums, outnumber any real expats (and sometimes pretending to be expats), or foreigners who have nothing of expat since they either do not reside in the country (typical case of those who travel 2 or 22 times for whatever reason) or if they reside in the country, they do so as locals. The info provided by them is often incorrect so we have to take care with some advices althgough by others ways (webs) can be quickly identify theirs rubbish advice. I am surprised by this matter when i often read into these site some dangerous or illegal advices

Moreover some of them are biased or racist and mostly of them often make dodgy offers, using this site as an advertising platform for their services, drawing a false picture of some countries or criticizing and denying the real expat advice.

This website could be awesome for exchanging info between expats if it weren't for these and some other things which I understand are very difficult to keep under control.

Useful tool.

Useful tool.
Nice to look for tips, answers...
The only bad spot for me is most of people is just using it to ask for information but they dont take the time after to answer to anybody, so in certain chats (countries) is just replying always same people.

I find it a useful social network

I find it a useful social network. To highlight the guides for each country and the news magazine. Also the forum section is very practical to get in touch with people in other countries of the world.

It should improve aspects such as design, accessibility and create an app.

As most others have pointed out

As most others have pointed out. The site has been hijacked by a group who are biased, possibly racist or bigoted. They value censorship above free speech and stifle any dissent or people sharing problems or painful experiences. The info provided is mostly incorrect and a quick google to an embassy can quickly identify the rubbish advice. Often times dangerous and illegal. The site has a peculiar and severe flaw. They allow "locals" to join .. who basically outnumber any real expats 15/1 . The locals make strange and dodgy "offers" . The other problem is in some zones they have locals pretending to be expats negating everything the expats say . Lastly there are a few old timers on there that have lost all perspective and can't stand any opinion other than their own and they pressure admins as long standing members to delete everything they don't like. I remember the older my grandma became, the more her stubborness increased and at a certain point you could no longer reason with her. There are a few "gold" members like these enforcing their seniority on the website forums . Often times stuff that is way more useful or coherent from younger members are lost and they keep banging on about their experiences in the 80's.

Avoid. They sanitize the information members provide to fellow members

I was a member of this site for many years, as I have lived in various countries in Europe, the Middle East and America.
However, when they started removing posts critical of issues occurring in the countries I had been staying for years and was warning new prospective retirees about, I cancelled my membership.
They basically draw a false picture of countries with their site sanitizing any criticism of local conditions.

Their excuse (I quote): The comment was not "balanced". So they wanted me to mislead fellow expats. When something is wrong, it is wrong and merits no couching it.

A waste of time.

I subscribed to this site to prepare for my retirement to Brasil (correct spelling). The main contributor on this site is dead and so the posts are very much out of date. Whenever site traffic is down, someone at the management asks a provocative sometimes racist question just to stir things up. There is an active pressure not to post anything that goes against the approved responses, censorship is the rule here. I managed just fine retiring here to Brasil but, it was no thanks to this site. I strongly recommend finding your answers to any questions you may have at the US Embassy via their site or email and for the most up to date information the Brasilian website (yes it is in English too). If you follow the information you receive from these trusted sources, you will be fine. As to social questions, people are people everywhere. I must add that I do not post online in any regular fashion only when I feel strongly that my experience will help.

I am extremely disappointed!

I am extremely disappointed!
I recently found a conversation in which one of the interlocutors attacked in a very rude way and spoke with hatred about two nationalities and accused them of crimes.
The whole conversation was disgusting and insulting to me!
After interfering in the conversation and expressing my opinion, a moderator from the website deleted my comments, but the racist comments of the person who wrote the post remained on the site!
After I sent a request to the moderator, for what reason only my post was deleted, I did not receive a response.
Stay away from this website!

This website could be awesome

This website could be awesome, however for one particular part (Puerto Rico) it become overrun by local people not the actual expats, and in my personal experience, (not just mine btw), those assess control, de facto preventing objectivity based on expats experiences. Only people who sing the song how everything is wonderful - are allowed, others face challenges, or are excluded if they openly describe their personal experience with state of affairs. Those "problematic" people (if they aren't kicked out, they are being told their simple add : "selling this or that..." is being denied after "review" as 'not complying with rules' (of course not explained what specifically was wrong 😂). One can't help, but believe is prevented as revenge from even simple add - when trying to sell their things.. 🤷🏻‍♀️
(I mean the add wouldn't change outcome - cuz as I said - place is kinda haunted dead cuz what I described above).. just a cherry on the cake - unmasking the locals true face and culture and mentality.

As this locals running the page - defy the purpose of this webpage, this website is doomed.
