Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 68 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers found the pricing to be excessively high, often triple that of competitors, with premiums increasing significantly without clear reasons, leading to a feeling of being overcharged. Reviewers also reported poor customer service, describing staff as unhelpful, rude, and difficult to reach, with some even feeling judged or ignored during interactions. A significant number of people experienced issues with claims, noting that the company often denied claims based on vague reasons like “wear and tear” or “no wind,” even when evidence suggested otherwise, and sometimes failed to cover damages as promised. Conversely, some people also felt that the company went above and beyond to ensure their life wasn't interrupted by an accident, providing good coverage and assistance. A few other people also felt that certain agents provided excellent customer service, saving them money and consistently exceeding expectations.

In 1928, two men shared a dream of providing a quality insurance product at a reasonable price. In the decades that followed we’ve grown and adapted to meet the changing needs of Americans. But one constant has remained: We have an unwavering commitment to uphold our founding ideals to provide industry-leading products and first-rate services to the customers we’re privileged to serve. Different Eras, Same Exceptional Service Farmers not only prides itself on helping you plan wisely for the unexpected, but also on helping restore order when it occurs, so you can keep moving along the road of your life’s plans. In 1959 a Farmers customer wrote us a letter of surprised gratitude when his car battery was replaced just an hour after it was stolen. A letter from a couple in 2002 wrote that their Farmers agent and Claims Adjuster “were exceptional in their handling of our grief, what we needed to do, and helpful in many other ways.” That same year, when Hurricane Rita struck Beaumont, Texas, Farmers sent 300 agents to assess damages while policy holders were evacuated. Farmers also donated $100,000 for the city’s emergency operations center and two megawatt generators that restored power to Beaumont. Whatever year or decade a disaster occurs, you can count on us to be there for you. Today, the companies comprising the Farmers Insurance Group of Companies make up one of the country's largest insurers of vehicles, homes and small businesses and provide a wide range of other insurance and financial services products. Farmers is proud to serve more than 10 million households with more than 19 million individual policies across all 50 states through the efforts of over 48,000 exclusive and independent agents and nearly 21,000 employees. The Farmers Exchanges are three reciprocal insurers (Farmers Insurance Exchange, Fire Insurance Exchange and Truck Insurance Exchange) owned by their policyholders, and together with their subsidiaries and affiliates comprise the Farmers Insurance Group of Companies. Farmers Group, Inc. and its subsidiaries, in their capacity as attorneys-in-fact, provide administrative and management services to the Farmers Exchanges. Absolutely an awful insurance company

Absolutely an awful insurance company. I've had claims in the past from car accidents to hurricanes and the insurance company always did their part but not Farmers Insurance, they don't even show up and only give a run around.I would not want anyone to go through what I had to deal with which is still an ongoing nightmare. AVOID FARMERS INSURANCE AT ANY COST

Ongoing Administrative Errors and Zero Accountability

I’m writing this review after spending over two months trying to correct an issue Farmers admitted was their fault and still being told I must pay for a policy period that was wrongfully canceled due to their internal administrative error.

Despite never missing a payment and having a clean driving record, my policy was canceled behind the scenes, and I wasn’t made aware until other insurers flagged it as a lapse. In fact, my LexisNexis report shows zero lapse in coverage but Farmers refuses to fix the broader record unless I pay for coverage I never had. It’s a clear case of "we messed up, now you pay to fix it."

What’s worse is I’ve since learned multiple others have had this same issue with Farmers all pressured to pay retroactive premiums just to clean up Farmers' reporting mistakes.

I’ve wasted hours on formal complaints, phone calls, and documentation just trying to clear my name so I can get a fair rate from a different provider. I’ve asked, respectfully and repeatedly, for a resolution that reflects the facts and allows me to move on. So far? No accountability.

If you value your time, your money, or your peace of mind... look elsewhere.

Loyal Client Shown the Door!

Between my time with MetLife and, more recently, Farmers (after the acquisition of MetLife’s business 4-5 yrs ago), I’ve had over 30 years of continuous coverage. In all that time, I never filed a claim (other than a few windshields/side window) or was at fault in an accident—neither myself, my wife, nor, more recently, my kids. I was a low-risk, long-term customer—reliable and loyal.
Unfortunately, that didn’t seem to count for much. Here’s what I experienced when my AUTO insurance was canceled. I found out not from Farmers but from the Massachusetts RMV. Incredibly, they NEVER communicated with me. Here's a summary:
- Policy becomes on track for cancelation after a single attempt to charge my card, followed by a vague email about updating autopay settings.
- No meaningful effort to reach me when the payment failed—just a claim that multiple USPS letters were sent, including a required 20-day cancellation notice. I NEVER GOT A SINGLE LETTER, NOT ONE!
- No phone call, no clear emails—just silence, despite the severity of canceling a policy.
- None of these alleged USPS mailed notices appeared in my online account inbox, where policy documents and important correspondence are typically stored. If cancellation notices aren’t posted there, that’s a serious system flaw. I guess they only mail them...really???
- Shockingly, my account was marked “Do Not Call”—not by me. So again, no outreach, just quiet cancellation.

All of this feels like a quiet effort to wind down legacy MetLife accounts and show me a much, much more expensive policy (50% HIGHER)….or the DOOR (I chose the latter).

I was a model policyholder for decades and expected far better treatment. Very disappointing.

Fight for clients and be an advocate for change is a good/great business culture but not when there’s a quietly understood mantra of don’t rock the boat or you could be “shown the exit”. Feels like Farmers has that attitude. Nobody and I mean nobody wanted to help me; a new biz rep was the closest to understanding the situation but that’s not her responsiblity so she couldn't do much.

My advice when considering Farmers...DON'T, RUN AWAY!!!!

Horrible customer service

Horrible customer service, rates are out of control for no reason and overall I don't recommend ANYONE ever going with this company. I've had nothing but billing problems, the agents can barely speak proper english or understand what you say, and they hang up on you when you are questioning and asking about the policies. Stay clear from this nightmare of a company!!!!

Absolutely horrible customer service

Absolutely horrible customer service. As a contractor I deal with 10 to 15 claims a week. This entire company from the agents to the adjuster are beyond unprofessional and rude.
Anyone shopping around for insurance please use someone else. They will deny your claims, give you the run around, low ball your claim amount. I highly recommend anyone other then this company.

TERRIBLE CLAIM SERVICE

A Farmers insurance insured client hit our vehicle - her fault documented fully by police report. Farmer claim took almost a week to get back with us - we have a high end luxury SUV - they told me their body shops didn't like to repair luxury cars to call the dealer and see what body shop they use - I did and took the car to the body shop and was informed it wasn't safe to drive so I had to leave the car and get the rental car which was a big hassle with Farmers trying to put us in a cheap sedan when we have medical issues as well and require a SUV - finally got that done - inferior car to ours but an SUV. Then they rejected the body repair amount and the body shop said they were asking them to repair the car at substandard to the Genesis policy for repair and they (the body shop) refused to agree to that. Then Farmers started notifying me they would just send me a check for the lower amount and I'm stuck with the balance and all the stress. TERRIBLE SERVICE and TERRIBLE POLICY - could care less about doing what is right. It's all about money and this is why the insurance industry is so disrespected. Our claim agent was Hilary Ward but they're all probably the same. We turned this over to our insurance carrier who will pay for everything and go after farmers for the money so I don't have to deal with Farmers again. If I could give them a negative rating I would.

Horrible

Horrible. I called in to cancel my account because I want to go with another company since I did not like their service and mistreatment. They told me I don’t need to make any official cancellation which was a lied and they sent my account to collections. They are so rude and have horrible communication skills. They lied and tried to overcharge me. I absolutely hate them.

Astronomically high rates for auto and…

Astronomically high rates for auto and home owners insurance when we have not had a claim on over 30 years for any insurance companies, but premiums went up every 6 months. Just got the same coverage and a bit more for about $2200 less per year! Stay away from Farmers insurance!

Read before you choose Farmers for your insurance

If I could leave negative stars I would. My house caught on fire January 2, 2025 here we are 3 months later and I am still trying to get my money back from Farmers. They left me in a cold dark house and would not return my phone calls or texts. I had to clean up my own fire damage and call an emergency contractor to come out and board up the hole in the house. I wasn’t even offered a hotel. I had to continue to call and text the adjuster to get a hotel as I had to sleep on somebody’s couch the first night. Their initial offer to fix my fire damaged home that was caused by GE repairman was to offer me $1500 plus a possible recovery
Of another 2300 once I proved I paid for all the repairs. I had to hire a public adjuster which then turned into Farmers adjuster Matt Craft, calling and threatening me and trying to use strong arm tactics to get me to settle immediately. Now here we are over two months later and Farmers is refusing to subrogate with GE, they’re refusing to pay me back any of my out-of-pocket expenses or time . Even After they refused to help with any cleanup, but yet said they were going to kick me out of the hotel if I didn’t get back in the house so I had to spend 49 of my own personal hours cleaning fire damaged walls, furniture, floors, ceilings, and I had to arrange all the contractors to come out and give bids and make repairs and pay all of that out of my own pocket. Delay , defer, deny that is absolutely Farmers method. They did not for one second care about me, my animals, or my daughter and they absolutely just use strong arm tactics to pay as little as possible. Matt Craft the adjuster is a flat out liar and I continue to have to provide text and phone conversations to prove that he’s lying to try to get my money back after I’ve paid a policy and this fire was no cause of my own. Pretty bad when GE‘s insurance company is calling me weekly to let me know that Farmers still won’t contact them to subgrogate the claim.
I would never recommend Farmers to anyone , they will lie and deny to save every penny they can.

Refusing to Cover Full Cost of Drywall Repair Despite 10 Years of Premiums

# Review: Farmers/Foremost Insurance - Claim Experience

## 1-Star Rating ★☆☆☆☆

After 10 years as a Farmers/Foremost policyholder with consistent on-time premium payments, I am documenting my recent experience with an interior drywall damage claim.

The facts of the situation are as follows:

1. Farmers/Foremost has acknowledged that my interior drywall damage is covered under my policy.

2. The insurance company has issued payment of approximately $700 for the covered damage.

3. I have obtained three separate professional contractor quotes for the necessary repairs. The lowest quote is $3,500, and this does not include all required materials.

4. When presented with these three independent professional quotes, Farmers/Foremost representatives stated that all three quotes were "unreasonable" and suggested I continue searching for lower-cost options.

5. Upon inquiry, the claims representative, Kevin Moser, explained that the $700 payment amount was determined by inputting data into a spreadsheet program that calculated the payment, without apparent consideration for actual repair costs in my area.

6. My premium payments to Farmers/Foremost over my 10-year history as a policyholder exceed the amount of this claim. When I inquired about this fact, the representative declined to address the question.

7. This matter has remained unresolved for one month despite multiple communications with my broker, contractors, and Farmers/Foremost representatives.

8. Communications with Farmers/Foremost have been consistently one-sided; representatives do not return calls unless repeatedly contacted.

The end result is that I must pay over $2,800 out of pocket for repairs that Farmers/Foremost has acknowledged are covered under my policy.

I am providing this information so that other consumers can make informed decisions regarding their insurance provider selection.

Farmers don’t stand behind you, if you file a personal home claim

On feb10th 2024, I suffered water damage to some of my personal items damaged by water in my home, the first step was filing a claim with farmers insurance, that process was easy, the next step became a dance of multiple steps, in which farmers sent a third party to my home to take away the less than 10 damaged items. After no follow up with my adjuster I started making calls , which was unanswered, next step I reach out to a supervisor, with farmers and more dancing around with reimbursement and numerous of failed emails sent by farmers with the list of contents, we are now more thsn s month into my claim, and I still don’t have any resolve to my claim filing or status, I’m so disappointed with farmers

Deeply disappointing Experience

We had a deeply disappointing experience with Farmers Insurance. As long-time policyholders in California, we insured both our home and vehicles with them for many years. When we purchased a new home, Farmers initially agreed to insure the property, only to drop us after we had closed escrow. Their reasoning? The plumbing was “too old” — despite the fact that they were fully aware of the home's age when they provided a quote and accepted our payment.

To make matters worse, they assured us that our auto policies would remain unaffected. Yet, just a few months later, we received a notice from the DMV informing us that Farmers had also canceled our car insurance—without any prior communication. The entire experience left us scrambling to secure new coverage on short notice.

I strongly caution anyone considering Farmers Insurance to think twice before entrusting them with their coverage.

Don’t use Farmers for your insurance.

We had a horrible issue with farmers insurance. My husband got a bundle deal through work. After he retired we didn’t get notified of having to pay out of our checking instead of payroll deduct. So they fixed it and they emailed an auto-deduct form for our checking. He signed it and emailed it back. Then this year rolls around and we cannot renew our plates by mail bc they say we have no insurance. I called Farmers. They said they never got the form and now want thousands of dollars to “start” a new policy. Why didn’t anyone inform us that they didn’t get the form? Our homeowners insurance is through them and we thought it was for our cars too. This is a total racket!

I had an absolutely terrible experience with Foremost Insurance/Farmers and their bad faith claim denial tactics. I filed a claim for vandalism and burglary at my insured rental property on November 6, 2024. Despite providing clear documentation of ongoing repairs and security upgrades, they wrongfully denied my claim on January 29, 2025, falsely stating that my property was "vacant" for over 30 days.

🚩 Major Issues with Foremost Insurance:
❌ False Claim of Vacancy – My policy clearly states that a property under repair is NOT considered vacant, yet Foremost ignored invoices proving repairs through November 2024 and denied my claim anyway.
❌ Delayed & Unprofessional Handling – It took weeks to even get a response from an adjuster, and my claim was transferred without notice multiple times. When I finally got to speak with a manager, they admitted their team was slow but did nothing to fix it.
❌ Serious Financial Losses – Because of their refusal to pay, I am losing over $2,000 per month in mortgage payments, taxes, utilities, and maintenance because I can’t rent the property in its damaged state.
❌ Ignored Key Evidence – I submitted contractor invoices, security system records, and emails documenting their delays, and Foremost still refused to reconsider.

💡 If you are thinking of using Foremost for home or rental property insurance, DON’T. They will find any excuse to deny your claim and make you jump through hoops while you lose money.

I have already filed formal complaints with the Illinois Department of Insurance, the Attorney General, and the Better Business Bureau. If you’ve had a similar experience, I suggest you do the same.

Foremost Insurance is the definition of bad faith insurance practices—stay away! 🚨
