Dont use this company

Dont use this company. If you dont want to buy their own insurance, they charge your card 3000EUR instead of just reserving. You get it back when you return the car, but if you are from a non-EUR country huge bank fees apply to the transactions.

Stay away from this car rental company

Stay away from this car rental company; they’re no different from scammers. The moment you first go to pick up the car, they charge extra fees related to the website you used to rent it. If you get fined in France, they share your information to notify you of each fine and charge a separate fee for every time they share it. Even though you got 4 fines and paid them all at once, they charge 55 euros separately for each one. I will immediately file a complaint with consumer protection over this nonsense they’ve put us through.

Awful experience -How is this company allowed to operate? Goldcar=ScamCar

Awful experience - how is this company allowed to operate?

1) Website booking is relatively easy, and you can turn down the excess insurance - this is the only positive bit of my experience with ScamCar.fr

2) Pick up - what a slow and painful process. Like others have said, you have to pay 3500 Euros from a small list of credit / debit cards that they will accept. No online banks, (revolut / wise), no business accounts, no AMEX, so basically you have to use a card that will charge you commission to put on the deposit. Then comes the next problem..

3) Strong and persistent upselling of their insurance. Despite declining the insurance on the web page, on numerous occasions the insurance options are spelled out and even hand written time and time again for you, resulting in a very prolonged and frustrating pick up.

3) Hidden charges. The price that you paid is not the final price. They hide extra charges in their terms and conditions, for me, it was an extra 46 Euro for early drop off. Other companies display this on their website clearly when you book.

4) Car was OK, a little scratched and dented, and none of the scratches were recorded on my contract, they advised me to take a video on pick up - which I did. However, by the time you have argued against the illegal hidden charges, and tried 4 or 5 bank accounts to pay the deposit, the light has decreased, and your video will not be that clear

5) Return the car and find that they charge you for the pre-existing damage - over 950 Euros!!

6) Spend hours fighting this scam claim, sending photos and videos of the pre-existing damage

One star only because the option for…

One star only because the option for zero is not available.

They refused to take my Mastercard credit card because it is a 'neobank' card (aqua). The only solutions they had would have cost me the same price as the rental itself. Absolute crap. As always goldcar you are mediocrity personified.
So left without a car and without a full refund. Managed to get £100 quid back after yelling at some poor bloke on the phone.

Avoid Goldcar, pay extra, it's worth it.

Avoid Goldcar — go with Sixt instead.

Our flight was cancelled, forcing us to travel by multiple trains, buses and then taxi just to reach the airport and collect our hire car. We called and emailed Goldcar to explain the delay, and we arrived within the collection time limit. It didn't matter. Our booking "timed out" one second after the agent opened it — and that was that (proof available as I asked the agent to record it in writing as I was so incredulous). No help. No alternative. No effort. Just a flat "there's nothing we can do."

So there we were: stranded with a small baby after eight hours of exhausting travel.

We walked over to Sixt, and the difference was night and day. They were understanding, kind, and fast — they even gave us a discount because they could see the stress we were under. That's what customer service is supposed to look like.

The lesson? Pay a little extra for a company that treats you like a human being. When something goes wrong — and travel always finds a way to go wrong — no saving is worth being abandoned AND paying for the pleasure. Skip Goldcar. Book Sixt.

Very poor experience with Goldcar…

A very disappointing rental experience. I waited 30 minutes just to reach the counter. Even though I had already provided all information online, the staff then spent another 30 minutes entering the same details again.

They also spent 15 minutes trying to sell me extra insurance that I did not need.
While we were waiting, we noticed staff laughing and joking about customers who had agreed to buy the additional insurance.

To make matters worse, the car I received was worse than the one advertised and promised when I booked online.

Poor service, unnecessary delays, pressure to buy extras, and a car below expectations. I will not use Goldcar again.

I booked a rental via booking.com with Gold car…

I booked a rental via booking.com with goldcar. I regularly book car rentals in EU. On discussion I was told that they did not take my credit card or Revolut for the 2000 euro deposit but they would need it on my debit card with a charge of 214 euro for exchange fees!! In addition they wanted a 144 euro deposit for fuel. All other rentals ever were happy for car returned with full tank. I refused to pay their exorbitant fees and went to Sixt who were happy to provide me with a car with deposit on my credit card and no fuel deposit. Also they would have only charged against a debit card for deposit in the case of a real claim. Booking dot com and Gold car are to be avoided for their rip off tactics.....

Terrible experience - do not be distracted by the low upfront prices

Goldcar has a very aggressive policy on upselling customers. They told us that we would have to pay a deposit of EUR 3,000 (!) unless we purchased an insurance of EUR 200... they warned us that they would charge us EUR 200 even for a small scratch on the car but they refused to write down the state of the car before giving it to us, their strategy is therefore based on trying to charge you for damages that you did not cause. Do not choose Goldcar, just pay a small premium to use an honest car rental company.

Be very careful giving your credit card to these guys.

On return of my vehicle to BVA airport Paris there was no one present so the key was left in the drop box as instructed. I received an email a few hours later to say I'd been charged for damages. I asked for evidence and was supplied a video and photo. I made them aware I also have a video taken when the car was dropped which shows there was no damage. It also shows the vehicle has been mpved since being dropped. Since pointing thos out I have not had any response. I've emailed asking for a response. I would say this is bordering on fraud. Avoid Paris BVA Goldcar. Once they have your card details they're happy to use them ...

Terrible experience at Toulouse

Terrible experience with the agency of Toulouse Airport. No contactless and card machine did not work with my debit card. Did not accept then AMEX and Monzo... They were pushing customers to take their insurance in order to avoid the 2500EUR deposit (I had already taken the insurance with Easy Car when booking...). At the end, I could not get my car and lost 500£!! terrible

No Gold here, folks

I reserved and paid for a GoldCar SUV at the Nice airport through another company. Arriving at the Nice airport from Amsterdam I went to the GoldCar counter. They had my prepaid reservation but would not accept my Mastercard or my AMEX card that were physically in my hand. They would also not accept the Visa card in my iPhone wallet. My family and I now had no rental car for our vacation. Enterprise, fortunately, was more professional. A pox on all Goldcar’s houses.

AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS!

Goldcar is without question the worst car rental experience I have ever had...

I rented a vehicle from Goldcar in France for three days and drove approximately 140km in total. Before leaving the airport, I inspected the vehicle and photographed multiple scratches, scuffs and areas of existing damage because the car was already far from new.

The collection experience should have been a warning sign. The branch was severely understaffed, with only two employees attempting to deal with a large number of customers and ongoing complaints. The atmosphere was chaotic, stressful and completely disorganised.

A few days after returning home, I received a damage claim for €744 relating to two minor scratches.

I formally disputed the claim within the timeframe Goldcar specified and supplied photographic evidence taken at the point of collection. The damage on the bonnet was not only visible at collection as highlighted in my photographs, but was also already recorded on the vehicle condition report provided when I collected the car.

Yet despite my dispute and an open ongoing investigation into the evidence provided, Goldcar proceeded to action the charge on my credit card.

What has been most frustrating is the complete lack of engagement with the evidence provided. Their non-existent customer service has for the most part been completely silent on the matter, despite multiple follow-up communications requesting any form of response. The photographs, the existing damage report, and the specific points raised in my dispute were never properly addressed.

Even more concerning is the cost being claimed. Goldcar charged €364 for one minor scratch and €325 for another. For superficial insignificant cosmetic marks on a vehicle that already had numerous scratches and blemishes across its bodywork. How on earth they can justify these costs is beyond me.

I have now been left with no option but to escalate the matter through my credit card provider.

I rarely leave reviews, but I feel I need to warn people about this scam. Please don't make the same mistake I made. Stay as far away as humanly possible from this abysmal company.

Do NOT use Goldcar

The wait at CDG was long, the back gate of our rental wouldn't open, and then they charged me over $500 for what they said was a scratch on a wheel. They never told me about it, just charged my card. They have no proof that the scratch came from me. At one point, they sent me pictures of a damaged car that was a completely different make and model than the one I rented.
It all appears to be a scam and I will go out of my way to make sure no one uses them.

Terrible company, avoid.

Terrible company. We were never offered the refundable security deposit, they just assumed we wanted the extra insurance. Contract was all in French so didn’t realise till the English language version came through later on email. Tried to complain several times but they just insisted we had “made a choice”. Avoid at all costs

Great value, great staff and the car was fine

Great staff and the car was fine. The slight downside for me was the hard sell on insurance when I already had great excess coverage bought at the time of my booking. A little confusing too was the recording of some car marks on initial inspection which were barely there which created great uncertainty around what other marks could be construed as damage. These can be near impossible to record unless you captured them from one particular angle. The member of staff who dealt with me was very reassuring but having once been taken for an expensive ride by a different car hire company I was left feeling very nervous for my entire trip if I was going to encounter problems when returning the car. Some Goldcar reviews from other offices only increased my stress as it appears others have fallen foul of this issue. Nothing at all happened during my hire and the same member of staff was fine on everything and more than helpful on the return so all was well. I can say nothing but good things about the staff member involved but some clarification around damage and less of a hard sell on excess insurance would improve the experience. Nevertheless, in hindsight, I was very happy with the overall experience and it was very good value and I will definitely use the company again.

Again got scammed by Goldcar

I hire cars quite often. And this is the third time i got scammed by Goldcar. This time in Marseille, at the check in I got a car with 33 damages labeled on the check-in form. Which makes it like impossible to check the form with the actual damages. When returning the car their was nobody at the drop-off and a long line at the office. There was a drop-off box for keys we used. After two weeks the deposit was still blocked. After I gave a call to Goldcar they told me their were damages and we returned to late. Ending up in €700 costs. We shared the proof that we refueled the car at the airport gasoline station in time. And we shared the video we made before departure. But Goldcar is keep saying we are to late and we made damages. Unbelievable.
