Goldcar are scammers. If you book through a broker such as Ryanair you can't get a refund and have the choice when you pick up of paying 300 euro deposit per day or paying 30 euro per day insurance.... See more

Goldcar is a scam!!!

This company is a scam!!!
Refused to give me my booked car and was left stranded as a result. Because on one of the 3 required documents my first name was in short form. Refused to to not only give me the car, but also refused to give me a refund.
Outrageous behaviour. Avoid! This is a scam!!!

Seriously-avoid at all costs

Seriously-avoid at all costs. Malaga Airport- pay £425 extra( in addition to cost of hire) or accept a 3000 euro policy excess in case of damage( and believe me, they’ll find some) and also pay £125 for a full tank of petrol( it won’t hold that much). To be refunded if car is returned full. Return car full to the brim- tank topped up 2 km away. No refund. Albeit lots of people telling me the same story. Absolute rogues

Terrible experience

Terrible experience, I've experienced the Spanish car hire additional insurance hard sell plenty of times but this lot take it to another level. Deposit on my voucher (carrentals) was 1.5k euro, high but bearable with my own arranged insurance. At the desk they insisted I needed to pay an additional 239euro for 'super relax' cover for 4 days, plus 128 euro fuel deposit. When I refused to go ahead, the deposit then suddenly grew to 3.5k euro plus 180 euro fuel deposit, when I was going to go ahead with that it suddenly needed an additional 1.5k euro. As it was near closing and I didn't fancy transferring over 5k euro to this sorry excuse for a company I was forced into their extra cover.
Do yourself a favour, don't even consider hiring from this company.

Terrible Experience – Untrustworthy and Unresponsive

Two months ago, I returned my rental car to Goldcar and was supposed to get my €1200 deposit refunded within the agreed timeframe stated in the contract. While my earlier emails were answered, my last two emails have been completely ignored.

I have sent a total of 10 emails and called them 5 times. Every time I call, I’m told the issue has been “escalated,” but nothing happens. They keep giving me excuses, push me off the phone, and promise follow-ups that never come.

Goldcar says one thing but does the opposite. Even with clear contracts and terms, they are unreliable and make you wonder if you’ll ever see your money again. At this point, I’m considering legal action just to get back what’s mine.

I strongly recommend avoiding Goldcar. Don’t make the same mistake—choose a trustworthy agency that actually delivers on its promises. This company is an absolute disaster to deal with!

I’ve used Goldcar for the first and the last time

I’ve used Goldcar for the first and the last time. When we arrived to pick up our reserved car at Alicante Airport, we were offered a wreck of a car with dents and scratches all over the car. We were of course forced to pay extra taxes upon pickup which was not informed about or included in our reservation. After redelivery of the car, I get an e-mail where Goldcar claim to have found a minor scratch impossible to see without a bright light on one of the door handles and claim EUR 172 for the damages. I took pictures of the car at pickup, but it is impossible to have pictures on such a detailed level and I consider scratches like this to be consistent with normal use and age of the vehicle. My conclusion is that I will never use Goldcar again and urge others not to use this unserious car rental agency either. Stay away from Goldcar!

WARNING

WARNING! Here you will be robbed of your money! We booked a car, paid rent, an extra charge of €40 for picking up outside office hours and €37 for priority to avoid queuing. Then it is very strange that the desk is closed when we arrive and when we return the next day they say they rented our car to another customer?! They say that we should get in touch in writing and then get our money back minus the first day. Strange, but we do that, then get the answer that because we didn't pick up within opening hours, we won't get any money back?!? Then why did we pay extra? Lying thieves!

Goldcar og Ryanair

I have rented many cars over the years and in various countries, but this experience with renting a car from Goldcar through Ryanair at Mallorca Palma Airport is the worst I have ever had in my 51 years.

I booked the car through Ryanair on my personal profile, where I had just purchased flight tickets for my family and me. Ryanair has all my information, from passport number to account details. When we arrived at Mallorca Palma Airport, two hours late due to our flight, there were two lines for Goldcar, each about 100 meters long. There was a lot of confusion about which line to stand in, so my wife and I stood in separate lines. After 1.5 hours, I finally reached the counter.

I had booked and paid for full insurance, but when I got to the counter, the lady at Goldcar told me that I had only written one of my surnames in my booking and therefore could not get the car. I showed her that it was the same name I had booked my flight tickets with and that Ryanair, the company I booked the car through, had all my information. She replied that it is what is in my passport, which includes all my surnames. Ryanair's instructions said nothing about needing a passport, just a driver's license and credit card for pickup. She told me I had to leave the line since it was long and try calling the company I booked the car through. It was 10:45 PM, and everything was closed.

We got back in line and told her that everything was closed. She then said we had to book a new car for 4600,- instead of the 1475,- I had already paid. She claimed the price I had paid through Ryanair was incorrect and that I had not prepaid, even though I showed her the receipt. She told us we could just go and take a taxi!

Never buy a rental car through Ryanair and never rent a car from Goldcar. It was a terrible experience from start to finish.

Made up damage

11 days after the rental ended we received a bill claiming we had damaged a tyre. We were offered the chance to dispute but they charged the card straight away regardless.
The car damaged was a different type to the one we hired. They are ignoring all our points proving we did not damage it. They cannot prove that we did, first and foremost because we didn't.
They had sent us confirmation of the vehicle, final settlement saying no charges, no damage was listed at the time of handing the car back, all dated and time stamped by them. Yet 11 days later there was suddenly damage always there????
Having used them many times before, we will NEVER use them again and will avoid their parent company too.
We are not letting this go. Are now moving towards legal action against them.

I rented in malaga

I rented in malaga, through rentalcarholidays.com, everything was supposed to be paid upfront, however they then took a deposit on the day, at the airport, which they said was to return the car full of petrol. I returned it full and they only returned half the money, claiming I had a mandatory insurance policy i needed to pay for

Stay away from Goldcar Pisa

Stay totally away from Goldcar Pisa office. They stole three times from my daughters Visa after leaving Italy. 1000 Eur in total . My daughter rented a car last summer paying extra insurance priced 400 Eur extra for the week. The car Had a sudden motor breakdown day 2. A new car was provided the day after, and Goldcar promised paying back extra costs/losses later. Instead they started ripping her visa off at 3 occasions . So in sum: faulty expensive cars, bad service and worst of all: burglars. Trying to reach them on phone from Norway always ends with a hardly English speaking person claiming: sorry mam , losing connection.. cannot hear you etc.. STAY Away!!

PEOPLE BEWARE

PEOPLE BEWARE, THEY ARE CRIMINALS!

I rented a car via doyouitaly, (DYI-65101790) which has a partnership with Goldcar, more than two months before my arrival. On the website, it does not mention that you have to write the full first names. I wrote my name as it appeared on the credit card, as you were supposed to block a deposit, and I had it in my hand while booking.

At the counter, the first thing the staff said was, "You have a problem! You won't get the car (truly unhelpful and not customer-oriented)!" I booked a non-refundable ticket, hotel, and car because I was certain about going on vacation to Sardinia!

Please don't try to deceive and STEAL from customers!!! Try to help them! Provide the car rental as per the contract! I wasn't the only one who didn't get a car because they don't accept American Express.

I rented this car via doyouitaly for 9 days at €550, writing my name with first initials and last name. However, I couldn't get the car, and I had to rent the same car again for €800 for 9 days, eventually renting it for 2 days at €240 because I had no choice. I was with my wife and two young children, waiting for five hours, but Goldcar did not respond to doyouitaly's request to make the necessary adjustments.

According to Visa, they were not allowed to do this, and I will dispute this transaction!!

NEVER AGAIN GOLDCAR for me.

Complete scammers who deserve a zero

I hired a car with this company at Lisbon airport and then was told that my credit card wasn’t working to use as a booking deposit , I phoned my bank and he told me my card was working fine and I asked the person to turn the screen around and show me he panicked and said that if i don’t pay by debit card that I couldn’t get my deposit back so went across to hertz car hire and funny enough my credit card was working and I had no problems at all so you’re better off going to a reputable company and avoid these scammers

Wish I had read reviews before I booked…

Wish I had read reviews before I booked and paid.
Booked true AutoEurope( used before and always good for price comparison)the issue is with Goldcar Portugal not AutoEurope.
We picked the car up in Lisbon at the airport ( one of the reasons I picked Goldcar was they have the office at the airport terminal, but looking back that’s just crazy busy and not good at all) . Prefer the puck up rentals outside the airport.
We arrived at 1pm but car was booked for 2pm so we had to wait an hour. Told to come back and queue again in their ticket system..
I had an issue with my credit card so we tried to use my husbands but they wouldn’t allow that as his name was not in the rental. I used another credit card ( which you would want to have as they hold near enough to €2k for the whole retal time plus a few extra days.
I have my own car hire excess insurance but was told they will hold €1600+€75+€150 on my credit card. The €75 is a toll activation device they say you have to have and don’t get refunded. They charge this to every customer. Such a scam. I felt like telling them take it out of the car and I pay my tolls in the post office.
We got the contract, went to the garage to pick up the car to find chaos. We got a Fiat estate packed it up with cases and golf clubs and two kids. I couldn’t raise the seat to see the bonnet so I went into the office to ask if they had an alternative car. I was told yes, but it would cost €400. I asked kindly for options but was told there was none. I had been told I was given the spare key and had to use the key to open/ lock the car at the drivers side. I had paid €1650 for 11 days hire. I said we had paid enough for the car. ( thinking of the extra €1825 charges). The car had 89000 km on it. I was told” if you order a steak in a restaurant you are not going to be served a lobster”! Seriously this is what the man said.I knew at this point there was no point getting into s discussion, I joined the queue of cars blocking up the car park in a single lane to get extra damages recorded. There was two big issues not on the contact that had to be noted or we would be charged for them. We were now 1 1/2hr later and still not on the road. We got them recorded and drive off but every day of the holiday I drove a bad car that cost an arm and a leg. Never again!

Sicily. No problems. Great car.

Rented a car through an intermediary website from Sicily airport. Short socially distanced queue. Lady spoke good English. Usual attempt to seek extra insurance. Showed my annual car hire insurance. Deposit on credit card. Got a brand new car. Left it with a key drop and no inspection. (Photos before and after rental just in case). No damage agreement and no charges came through a couple of weeks later. All good. I'd give 5 star review if they just accepted that I had annual insurance rather than still try and make me feel worried a bit, but that's just their job to upsell, like all car hire companies.

My experience is from last summer 2019

My experience is from last summer 2019, hired a car through advertising on Ryanair's website, appeared to be a good deal. Got to Milan Malpensa and similar to every story here was aggressively sold extra insurance despite the fact there was third party and I didn't need it. The sales person at the desk insisted that I would have an accident so I must take it. I had to get quite annoyed before she stopped! Also it's not the welcome you expect when you arrive late in the evening and you're about to get in a left-hand drive for some distance, also had me convinced I would have an accident!
Everything went OK with the car although was one hour late back with the car on return and got a hefty charge. This was July and then in December got an email from Goldcar saying I'd committed a road offence in Bologna and they (Goldcar) were going to take €55 off my credit card to tell me this!! I mistakenly thought that they were paying the fine but today I have received a notice from Holland (!) with the fine and how I could pay etc.
I'm shocked on two counts, firstly that Ryanair would choose to partner with these guys and secondly how terrible they are with customer service. €55 to tell me I got a fine!!! What's even worse is that they still had my credit card details on record when they should have destroyed them.
Wish I had read these reviews before I booked with them, never again, stick with a reputable brand.
