LUNCH TIME CURIOSITIES
This is a reinvigorated version of the previous café here so my wife and I popped in for a light lunch on a warm day in early spring. I was impressed with the outside tables as they are shaded from the Sun and that suits me. Neighbours told us it was worth a visit so here we were.
I went to the counter to order, as requested, and was served by smiling Binnie; so far so good. My order was two teas, a teacake and a cheese scone. 'I'll bring that down if you would like to go out and find a table.'
My bill was £10.50; perfectly reasonable. I was not offered a receipt.
Well the other 'waitress' had now launched into the practised method of identifying to which table orders needed to be taken. That was shouting out what she had in her hand and seeing which customer jumped in response. Bit of a conversation stopper! Not the best way to do this part of the job I thought. Seems to me that a table number, or order number, on a card works well and is silent, but no matter. There was worse to come.
They were badly short staffed. The reason given, 'we have new owners.' 'Oh dear, what a pity,' thought I.'
I think one, or possibly, two in the kitchen and two serving, taking orders and payment, taking orders to the tables, clearing the tales. I saw no table cleaning done, and we were there for more than half an hour. I know it was a busy time at around 1 o'clock but tables do need a hygiene wipe between customers. I did not see a Hygiene Certificate on display but that does not mean that they don't have one but legally it should be clearly on display as far as I know.

On the A30 heading to HONITON from AXMINSTER. Turn left at Crossroads 0.44 miles after passing Windmill Garage on left just before a right hand bend.

Honiton Garden Centre has a wide ranging display of plants, flowers, seeds, tools, benches and sheds. A tidy and pleasant walk around visit with helpful, knowledgeable staff.
