Terrible experience

I rented a car from Italy through a broker, with a clear contract and full insurance coverage including reimbursement of any excess. At the time of pickup, the staff were immediately rude and unhelpful. When my credit card (the one used for the booking) had a technical issue, I explained that I could use my wife’s card, which is linked to the same bank account. At first, they reassured us and charged the €30 airport fee, but only after taking the payment did they inform us that, since we were using a different card, we were required to purchase their additional insurance at a cost of €20 per day (€140 total for 7 days) — more than the entire rental itself (€126).

I refused to accept these new conditions and requested a refund of the airport fee, which they denied. After over an hour of arguing with extremely rude and unprofessional staff, I even called the local police, who unfortunately couldn’t do anything.

I acknowledge the initial issue with my card was my fault, but their behavior – first reassuring us, then changing the terms after taking payment – was dishonest and unacceptable.
A terrible experience – unprofessional, deceitful, and best avoided at all costs.

Hidden Fees and Deceptive Practices

Hidden Fees and Deceptive Practices – Avoid KWL Rent a Car Malta

My experience with KWL Rent a Car Malta was deeply disappointing and left me feeling completely exploited. What looked like a straightforward booking through CarJet turned into a maze of hidden charges and misleading terms.

- I paid €65.46 to CarJet for a booking that included “full protection”.
- At the desk, I was charged an additional €221.60 “rental fee”.
- Despite already paying for full protection, I was required to purchase extra insurance for €289.10.
- A €650 deposit was requested, which, though high, was not the worst part.
- Most shocking was the €3,800 guarantee deposit. While this was technically mentioned somewhere in the booking process, it was buried deep in the fine print and not made clear at any stage before payment. For context, reputable companies in Luxembourg usually require a deposit of around €600, and most credit cards wouldn’t even support such a high guarantee.

I received the car with less than half a tank of fuel and was charged €50 for it. The agent even told me I could return the car “with as little fuel as possible”, which is simply not how any reputable company should operate. A full-to-full policy is the bare minimum.

No Transparency or Accountability:
All of these extra charges and requirements only became apparent after I had paid at the counter. When I realised how unreasonable these terms were and tried to cancel, I was told a refund was not possible. I had no choice but to accept the situation, especially as I urgently needed to get my unwell son to hospital.

KWL Rent a Car Malta’s approach is the very definition of predatory: technically legal but deliberately misleading and designed to trap customers. The lack of clear communication, transparency, and customer service is shocking.

If you value your peace of mind, avoid KWL Rent a Car Malta. There are plenty of honest car hire firms in Malta – don’t make the mistake I did.
