Our van had off grid power issues. The return process at Maui Auckland took too long.

We were very disappointed with our campervan rental experience.

When we picked up the campervan, it had no power, the Road User Charges (RUC) were expired, and a warning light was on the dashboard.

We arrived at 8:30 AM to collect the vehicle, but by 11:30 AM, these issues still hadn’t been resolved. We wasted three hours of our holiday just waiting.

This was extremely frustrating, especially as we were travelling with young children. We expected the campervan to be properly checked and ready before our arrival.

Overall, a very disappointing experience and definitely not the start to our family holiday that we had hoped for.

From collection to return, there were repeated issues. I was told the Iveco was only around 10 months old, but public registration records showed it had been registered in 2024. The handover was rushed, my pre-booked snow chains were initially forgotten, and the fresh-water level indicator was faulty.

On the first day, the shower water was grey and dirty and the waste-water system was choked. The next day, a large amount of dirt and gunk came out when I emptied the waste tank. After clearing it and refilling with potable water, the problems disappeared.

The worst experience was getting bogged in mud at night. After calling 111, I was routed to Maui and then their towing partner. I was initially told a tow would arrive in about an hour, only to be told 20 minutes later that it was actually three hours away and no tow would come. I was then advised to seek police/third-party assistance and ended up paying NZD 1,150 for a tow while service person mentioned that it can be recovered from Maui while I understand bogging may not be covered under the Platinum package — my complaint is about the confusing and inconsistent assistance when I was stranded.

Even at return, staff appeared unaware of my Platinum package and were unclear about the vehicle requirements.

Overall, the vehicle preparation, handover, communication and roadside assistance were far below what I expected from Maui. The experience left a very poor impression and I would expect much better from a premium campervan company.

The Maui Elite was excellent and in great condition. Everything worked as expected. The pick up and delivery was easy - the drop off at Queenstown was especially pleasant and easy. We needed to have a package delivered to Auckland (Lost boots) and they arranged for the delivery - kudos to them. Overall great experience. A few minor items to improve:
The location of the airport shuttle in Auckland was unclear and we could never find it (after walking with baggage from Int'l ) and they never picked up their phone to help
The person doing the pickup didn't really know the vehicle or process - any question we asked were answered by 'Oh I don't really know, just check online or watch the video'
The controls of the heater seem to be random and there wasn't any explanation - we tried various settings, on/off etc. and finally just resorted to turning it on or off to control the temp
We had requested tire chains and they weren't provided - we called and they said to just buy them and they would reimburse us (we ended up not needing them)
Lots of noise inside the vehicle - may items squeaked and rattled. Not sure what you can do but it makes conversations while driving nearly impossible

Overall the campervan itself was really good, amazing to drive and plenty of room for 2 people. We picked our van up from the Auckland branch and Julie was awesome. My issues with it all started when the van itself didn't show the correct water level for fresh and waste water. Not the end of the world but a frustrating thing not to be able to keep track of, an issue maui is aware of. Some frustrating hidden fees as well that they don't tell you about when you book it. Definitely ended up being more than the booking fee and needing an extra couple hundred bucks at the end.
Overall I rate Maui and the vans themselves and would be something id think of in the future.

Our pickup experience was seamless and stress free, Ruth was lovely and very helpful in getting us set up and checked in preparation for picking up the vehicle. Murray who showed us to our van and gave us a full tour of the vehicle was exceptional. He was thorough giving us everything we needed to know about the vehicle answered all of our questions and made sure every part of the vehicle was safe and ready to go before we embarked on our journey. He also asked us about our trip and even gave us some recommended spots to stop in and see along the way. dropping off the vehicle was just as seamless as pick up. The customer service was excellent from start to finish.

Rented a campervan for a long-awaited family road trip around the South Island, and unfortunately the experience was pretty disappointing from the outset.

The house battery was flat when we picked it up, which meant we were cold for the first few nights. I’m genuinely surprised something as basic as this isn’t checked before handing over the keys.

Things got considerably worse when leaving Hanmer Springs. While driving on a very busy open road, we suddenly had a major leak above the driver’s seat, resulting in roughly four litres of water pouring down on me while I was driving. Aside from being ridiculous, it was genuinely dangerous.

The helpline wasn’t overly helpful, and we were eventually directed into Christchurch to have the issue resolved, costing us basically a full day of our family road trip. We were given a replacement camper and asked whether we could extend our hire by 24 hours to make up for the lost day, which they agreed to.

To then discover we had actually been charged for that extra day was pretty unbelievable considering the extension was only necessary because their camper had failed in the first place.

Between the flat battery, dangerous water leak, lost day of our holiday, inconvenience of changing campers and then being charged for the additional day, it was a really poor experience.

Interestingly, while dropping the replacement camper back, we heard another customer describing a similarly disappointing experience.

Unfortunately, I wouldn’t hire a Maui again.

My partner and I picked up our motorhome on the 29th July.
Very smart office and lovely staff.
We were shown how things work in the van. We stayed for a bit to familiarise ourselves with the vehicle.
We couldn't turn some lights off or turn the chairs. I went into the office and spoke to Murray. He came out to the van. He showed us some things that were missed, like the sink in the shower moves to create a cubicle.
Murray is a really nice guy. We got chatting about our plans. He suggested all sorts of places to visit and how the camp sites work. He was a mind of information. So helpful.

Our trip was made wonderful from beginning to end, the company was professional, the van immaculate & comfortable. The process easy too! The staff were so friendly & helpful. We will definitely be back. It was our first time in a motorhome & we loved it. Cheers.

Our holiday in the Maui motorhome was amazing, and our kids absolutely loved the experience. We did have a small leak on the first night, but the roadside assistance team responded quickly, booked us into a workshop, and had the issue resolved the very same day. We really appreciated how efficiently it was handled, allowing us to continue enjoying our holiday with minimal disruption.

Overall, we had a fantastic experience and would happily recommend Maui to others.

Fantastic motorhome journey, with room to improve the damage-claims process

We had a fantastic journey through New Zealand with Maui, and the overall motorhome experience was genuinely worthy of five stars. The trip was memorable and enjoyable, and travelling by motorhome gave us a wonderful way to experience the country.

Unfortunately, an accident occurred during the rental. This highlighted an area where Maui could improve its claims-handling process. At the Auckland branch, the full NZD 7,500 damage liability was charged to my card without clearly explaining that it was only a provisional amount pending assessment. I was also not initially provided with an itemised repair quotation, claim reference or expected timeframe, despite explaining that these documents were required by my separate insurer.

This created avoidable uncertainty and required me to make a formal written request for clarification and supporting documentation. In future, Maui should clearly explain at the branch that any maximum damage charge is provisional, provide written information about the assessment and refund process, and give customers a claim reference and expected timeframe immediately.

That said, I would particularly like to acknowledge Katrina from the Auckland Claims Team. She responded within the timeframe I requested, communicated professionally, provided the final itemised repair invoice once the repairs were completed, and arranged a substantial refund of the difference between the provisional charge and the actual repair cost.

Although the initial claims communication could have been much clearer, the journey itself was fantastic and the matter was ultimately resolved professionally. For that reason, I am still happy to leave Maui a five-star review, while sincerely encouraging them to improve transparency and communication when damage claims arise.

Everything from pickup to drop off was effortless

Everything was great! My family loved our RV trip.

Friendly staff during both pickup and drop-off. The operations instructions were easy to follow. Having rented a motorhome 7 or 8 years ago, the specifications have definitely improved—the added camera and extra mirrors made driving and parking much easier. The motorhome itself was under 2 years old, so it felt very new, clean, and tidy.

Great campervan with full facilities, suitable for families with 3 children
