What can we say? Using Wilderness was a great experience. We picked up the van in Auckland and dropped it off in Christchurch. Both sites had lovely friendly staff. This was easy process. We chose the VIP package for peace of mind. Wi fi worked a treat in all places but one. The easy-to-connect CarPlay was great, so we could use our Spotify to play our music. The van was comfortable and clean. After getting used to the mechanics, it was awesome. I lost count of how many times I rang them when we could not work out how to use something, but they were very accommodating and answered the questions in a friendly manner. Travelling in a motor home for the first time, we enjoyed it immensely. We are in our seventies and thought we would give it a try. So easy to drive, park and manage. We did not run into any trouble finding a park. I did book some caravan parks in the busy places like Milford and Christchurch. We did find getting out of the van a little high, so we used the side door with the steps to enter and exit. The Bed was a little high, and we both had a few bruises on our legs. After a week, we managed, and it became more familiar. We purchased a long-handled broom from a cheap shop and this made sweeping much easier. We had a little hiccup with the van. But the company organised for us to be towed to a caravan park. By morning, a new van had arrived from Christchurch, and we were on our way. A motorhome is definitely one heck of a way to see New Zealand. The motor home was so easy to drive and had all you could need. A gift of sand fly spray, which was greatly appreciated, as the West Coast has some biting, itchy little pests to contend with. A nice block of New Zealand finest chocky to nibble on and some very lovely coffee to drink. The mattress and pillows were super comfortable. We free camped using the campermate app and stayed in some caravan parks. (Joined the top 10 caravan park membership) This gave us discounts on the parks and activities during our trip. New Zealand is breathtakingly beautiful. Photos do not do these amazing landscapes justice. Five weeks travelling in a very comfortable van and there is still so much to see and do. New Zealanders are such friendly, welcoming people. Happy to have a chat and share places to visit. We had a lot of laughs along the way. A professional company to deal with that makes customers feel satisfied. We noticed many wilderness vans while travelling, but feel they need to be identified with a colourful wrap as the company is well worth being seen on the highways. A high end company which lives up to its reputation for personalised service and good communications. I was particularly impressed by the pre-holiday experience . I had quite a lot of queries and all were answered promptly and carefully. Thank you. The motrohome and equipment were high quality and covered all eventualities. it was not Wilderness's fault that the inter-island ferry broke downa nd we had to do a major change of plan, but we got it sorted together.

Wilderness Motorhomes have handled the question of our reimbursement in a very professional manner and the money reached our bank account within the week. I would have no hesitation in recommending Wilderness Motorhomes to anybody who is seeking adventure in NZ.

The flexibility of a motorhome is a great advantage compared to renting a car and stays at hotels. We did rent a Wilderness „double“ camper that was well equipped and accompanied us well over a total distance of 1.875km in 10 rental days. We had a battery failure that was fixed by the road service within 2 hours. Wilderness reacted to questions very fast. What we would suggest is to produce short digital tutorials to each technical issue of the van and provide these tutorials a week before the rental commences.

From booking, collecting, using the Motorhome, to drop off, all went smoothly and overall a very pleasant experience.

Incredible experience! This is the second time in as many years that we have used this company because they are amazing. Nothing was too much trouble - communication is timely and always helpful. All staff we communicated with where fantastic and amazing. I cannot recommend this exprerience highly enough. Wonderful.

We hired a two plus motorhome, it was in excellent condition and provided all the comfort for a three week experience and easy to drive

Starting with the booking and the support in that process, to taking over our camper with detailed and helpful instructions and the easy return of our vehicle made our trip absolutely seamless.
Although “Wilderness Motorhomes” is rather in the upper price range, it is well worth the money. The vehicles are well maintained, clean and of a high standard.
We enjoyed a wonderful road trip trough New Zealand and felt comfortably at home in our home on wheels.

We had a Double for 2, which was perfectly set up for a couple. The website was very informative with lots of useful guidance and weblinks. The reviews were all good and mine is too. The Wilderness staff in Christchurch were excellent at handover and return, being both friendly and knowledgeable. Over 2 weeks, we did 2100km with no issues at all. The Fiat based van coped with all road conditions and was easy to drive and manoeuvre. We took the VIP package, which whilst not cheap, provided a lot of peace of mind. Also the WiFi on board was super reliable, especially for using the Carplay/Android auto in the van for navigation.

Great experience. We rented a motorhome for 3 weeks in October 2025. Wilderness were great. We picked up the motorhome in Auckland and worked our way down the north and south islands dropping it off at Christchurch. Support before our trip, arrival, pickup, support during the trip and drop-off were all first class and we enjoyed the motorhome itself. Fantastic holiday!

Renting with Wilderness was the best thing we could have done for our trip through NZ. During booking, picking up, traveling and upon returning, Wilderness has shown great customer service. This company is reliable, friendly and their customers are on number 1. We’d run into some issues and it got solved right away, without any complaints. Cars are either brand new or with a very limited amount of km’s. We traveled for 2 months with 2 little children (2 and 4) and our motorhome was great. We rented the double 4 and especially enjoyed the fixed bed in the rear that is possible to close off from the front with a door, so we could have our evenings in the car without bothering the kids (or the other way around 😉). We had the best time of our life and that’s also because of this great company. Highly recommended.

We just finished a 10 day hire driving the South Island with our 2 kids. What an amazing experience. The staff were fantastic and went through everything, we didn’t have any plans for the start of our trip so they recommended a route for us to take and this was a highlight of our trip. Would definitely recommend Wilderness, one of our best family holidays so far.

Traveling through New Zealand in a Wilderness Motorhome was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. From the very beginning, the staff made everything feel seamless, they were kind, thorough, and patient in walking us through every feature of the motorhome so we felt completely prepared before hitting the road. Their warmth and attention to detail made it clear that they cared about more than just renting us something, they wanted us to have the adventure of a lifetime, and we truly did!!
The motorhome itself was spotless, beautifully designed, and surprisingly very spacious, even with 4 of us. It had everything we needed to feel at home, but the biggest game-changer was the WiFi. (INCREDIBLE) My friends and I were still balancing work while traveling, and having reliable internet made it all possible, from sending emails in the middle of the mountains to rerouting where we were trying to head on the fly was really nice to have. It was that perfect balance of adventure and comfort, and it honestly felt like the best of both worlds.
What made this trip extra special, though, was the experience of traveling in our 20s with close friends. Having the RV door wide open to mountain views, pulling over at random roadside fruit stands, and ending nights around the little kitchen table in the Motorhome was so perfect and set up nicely. These are the kinds of memories you never forget! the kind you talk about for years. Wilderness gave us the freedom to see what we needed and beyond, and it honestly was easy to drive (even through snow!).
From the pick up in Christchurch to drop off, everything with Wilderness was smooth and stress free, which made it so easy to just focus on enjoying the adventure. I can’t recommend this company enough. If you’re thinking about exploring New Zealand, do it this way. Traveling by motorhome gave us the chance to slow down and see literally everything and more.

I've been lucky enough to travel with Wilderness four times over the past seven years in different models, and each time has been a dream! Wilderness is a step above in quality and service from any other NZ motorhome company - their motorhomes are incredibly well thought out in terms of space and design, with awesome features that make life easy - we rented the King/Twin for 4 this time and loved the large garage for storage, having a twin bed setup (as I travelled with a friend), separate toilet and shower and Apple Carplay for navigation and music on the road. Renting in the height of winter with sub-zero temperatures overnight, you need to be able to rely on staying warm and comfortable and the gas heating is super effective! The team at Wilderness really take care of you through the whole process too - we felt like valued customers from beginning to end.

My friend and I have just completed a 10 day winter South Island trip in July, travelling deep into Fiordland and the Mackenzie/Aoraki area. We travelled in a "king/twin for four" Carado. It was a fantastic experience taking a Wilderness motorhome. We loved the spaciousness of the vehicle, and the superior insulation and great heating, meaning we were warm and toasty inside, depsite the negative temperatures outside! Wilderness lives up to its reputation as a premium option - right from the beautiful and calming pick up area, the super chatty and friendly staff and the exceptionally beautiful and well maintained vehicles. Everything worked perfectly in our motorhome, and it was fully equipped with everything we needed for a great week of exploring. We especially loved the full size fridge and freezer, the space between the twin beds, the separate toilet and shower and the huge garage. Definitely would choose Wilderness again, especially for a winter trip where warmth and comfort is so important.
