Avoid the new MG HS Trophy at all cost!
Avoid the new MG HS Trophy at all cost!
If you are only concerned with aesthetics, then by all means get one. They are probably the best priced and best looking cars in their class but if you actually want anything other than the engine to work, then don't bother. I bought a brand new MG HS Trophy and have had it a year and it has been beset with faults and MG technical have an inability to fix anything. My car has now been in seven times and although the sat nav issues have been resolved, there are a list of other faults which they simply don't seem to be able to resolve and the resolution of the sat nav faults caused further issues with other functions on the car. They now seem to be at the stage where they are saying I have to wait for updates from MG China!
I tried to effect the consumer rights act 2015 and was told "it's nothing to do with us, we just make the car, you have to go to the seller" to which i did but they too refused to act, stating "that I used another MG dealership to repair my warranty issues, so they couldn't do anything for me" which is in total contradiction to MG's rules on using fellow MG dealerships. I am now being forced to go to the Ombudsman.
Unsafe MG3
In the summer of 2024 we helped our daughter purchase a September 2023 registered MG3, so quite a new car. All was well until recently when driving on the Bristol ring road the car cut out when in the fast lane. My daughter managed to guide the car to the hard shoulder and restart. This then happened two more times by which time we had of course decided the car was unsafe. Driving to the MG Drive garage at Patchway, North Bristol, we booked the car in for checking. The service clerk was not overly interested in the fault, rather he just wanted us to sign the paperwork for the 'diagnostic' tests to proceed, with an associated cost. When escalating to the service manager and asking why such vehicles had not been recalled, again the priority was to sign the paperwork. When telling the service manager that this fault was all over the internet, he was only moderately interested. The diagnostic tests happened the following day but guess what? No problem could be found, and the fee of £144 for the tests was of course to be paid. They offered to drive the vehicle about over the next 2 days and again no problems were reported. This was a dangerous vehicle. The following day we arranged for the vehicle to be collected and brought back to our original supplier. We then had to pay off the negative equity of £2500 and purchase another vehicle. We do not believe, and sincerely hope this vehicle will not appear on any dealer's forecourt. When making a formal complaint to MG Drive, Patchway, we were told that it might be rodent damage! Well, if the vehicle had been kept in a barn yes, but on a parking space in Bristol? No. So look out for the rats before you drive! MGs now consigned to the history books as far as we are concerned.
MG ZS Hybrid purchased June 25
New- MG ZS Hybrid purchased June 25,
Vehicle operates inconsistently,we didn’t experience issues on the test drive that we have since handover..including reported power loss..
Resulting after sales customer service has been extremely poor..would never buy another car from MG
Health and safety one made on MG cars
I have just been given a MG HS as hire car. I hate that you can't switch off all the bells and whistle warnings permanently but that it resets every time you switch the car off. It really sucks and is a waste of time to have to turn it off manually each and every time you turn the car back on. So if you don't like getting shouted at don't get a new MG!!
MG, PILE of CRAP
Where do I start? Well as always start from the beginning. At the start of the year 2025 I had a lovely Ford Kuga-ST 21 plate diesel and I needed to change it because I was no longer doing the mileage to clear the pdf exhaust system. I would of like to have brought another Kuga-ST but at just shy of £39,000 I did not wish to spend all my saving on that with the trade in of my 21 pate Kuga. So this where the story starts with the MG. I was doing some research as you do, but instead of going to the Trustpilot MG reviews, I went to YouTube to see what these petrol heads have to say, you know the ones you see on TV and motor shows, well that was my biggest mistake, never rely on them, as all they do is ride around for a few weeks and give you an over view.
I should have gone to the MG reviews of people who have had the car for sometime and was in a better position to make a judgement. I wish I had gone there in the first place, had I done that, I would not have touched a MG with a bargepole. I am 70 years old and the MG is the worst car I have ever had. It was the MG HS Trophy top model, yes it was big, comfortable and had independent suspension, but that’s where it finishes. From the first day I drove that car from Leeds Luscombe dealership I had problems. First the short cut button on the steering wheel did not work, the entertainment screen would go blank and over the next 4 months it went back 4 times to the garage with one problem after another. The list of problems was massive, would not start, mirrors would not open out, the car would not lock, and every 2/3 weeks when you got in the car and drove a few yards the car horn would pip twice when you were driving, and sometime it happened when you pulled up to park and I had to get out of the car and apologise if there was a person near me, “saying sorry that’s not me, there is something wrong with the car” There were other issues, but you get the point.
After 6 months of problems and lots of excuses from the dealership I decided to get rid of the pile off junk. It was only after reading the review from people who have or had a MG that I decided to write this to help others make a more informed decision. Thank you all for writing your experiences, I only wish I would have read them first.
There is an upside to this. I did start of by saying that I wanted a Ford Kuga-ST in the beginning but chose not to because of the price. Well I ended up with a Ford Kuga-ST 74 plate with only 3,800 miles and resisted on the 13/12/2024 only 3 months older then the (pile of crap MG HS) for £23.699, I traded the pile of crap for £21,588 so although I may have lost on the MG which I paid £25,545, the difference for the Ford Kuga was £2,610, so overall I got a better deal, I lost £3,957 on the MG and brought the Kuga for £23,699 you add my loss of the MG plus add what I needed to pay for the Kuga the sum work out altogether £30,266 so I still saved just shy of £9,000 on a new. I call that a result.
It was only when I got back into my new Ford Kuga-ST that I realised how antiquated the MG technology is. MG is cheap for a reason.
Invicta MG Maidstone
Complaint Summary – Invicta MG Maidstone
Background:
I took my car to Invicta MG Maidstone on 27 August 2025 for its MOT and service. At purchase, I was told the car came with an MG service warranty covering servicing costs. However, I was charged £350.03 for the service and quoted £54.99 for the MOT. When I queried this, I was told the warranty only applied to non–wear-and-tear parts.
To reduce the MOT cost, I was persuaded to take out a 2-year service plan (£500), which I later cancelled.
Unjustified Repair Costs and Misleading Advice
Later that day, I received a text asking me to approve repairs totalling over £1,200, allegedly for MOT advisories. I said I could not afford this, and the advisor insisted that at least the “red” items — two tyres (£143 each) and wipers (£70) — were needed for the MOT to pass. I declined and said I would source tyres myself. I was told the service was completed, but the MOT was pending.
Concerns About the Quality of the Service
As I left, warning lights appeared on the dashboard. I took the car to Halfords Chatham for a free check. They found:
Empty brake fluid and screen wash reservoirs
Cobwebs under the bonnet
Tyres and brake discs in good condition
Only wipers required replacement
This raised doubts that any service had been performed, despite the £350 charge.
When I reported this to Invicta MG, they said they would not investigate unless I returned the car.
Return Visit and Poor Handling
Upon return, staff were dismissive. The brake fluid reservoir was visibly empty, yet a staff member claimed it was “wet enough.” They maintained the tyres would fail an MOT, despite Halfords and another garage confirming they were safe.
After test driving, an Invicta staff member confirmed the warning lights were still active, but said they lacked the tools to fix them and booked me in for 3 September 2025.
Warning lights displayed “Forward Collision System Unavailable”
“Auto Emergency Braking System Unavailable”
“Pedestrian Auto Emergency Braking System Unavailable”
The receipt I was given listed brake fluid and screen wash as supplied (which was false) and stated a 60,000-mile service had been completed — my car was under 30,000 miles.
Delays, Lack of Communication, and Escalation Failures
On 3 September, after waiting over four hours, I was told the issue could not be fixed that day and the car might need dismantling to check a “shifted spring.” When I asked who was responsible, given the issue began after their service, staff said “I don’t know.”
I asked for taxi reimbursement to get home — this was initially refused and only later arranged.
Despite assurances, no communication followed until I chased by email. I was repeatedly told the driver was unavailable due to holidays, emergencies, or sickness between 5 September and 7 October 2025, and my car still has not been collected or repaired.
MG Head Office and External MOT Confirmation
I contacted MG head office during the first week of the incident and again via email on 29 September 2025. My email was acknowledged but simply forwarded back to Invicta MG Maidstone, with no further response.
I later had the MOT done at an independent garage, which passed the vehicle without needing any of the £1,200 repairs quoted by Invicta MG. This confirms the advisories and charges were misleading and unjustified.
Purchase of MG Trophy Hybrid+
Recently purchased a new vehicle from MG Cinderford and we are always skeptical about salesmen. But as an exception Jack Brittain-Long was refreshingly frank, accommodating and very service orientated. Every requirement made by us was seen to and on collecting vehicle we had no disappointments.
2023 MG ZS they are cheap for a reason…
2023 MG ZS they are cheap for a reason 16000 miles worn out rear discs and pads, failed rear shock, noisy clutch release bearing. Plus expensive servicing for a budget brand. Also they want £250 just to look at it for a possible warranty fix which you might get back but it means trusting them and for a poorly made car could be a nightmare
Purchased our MG HS 74 Plate direct…
Purchased our MG HS 74 Plate direct from the showroom at WLMG. Initially all was well after 8 weeks when you put the car in reverse the screen went black with AVM failure in red letters - being unable to see the right side / back of the car as the screen was black, dealer advised at this point how to reset it - this was unsuccessful a week or so after the screen also did the same when putting on the right indicator.
Our car has now been into the garage 3 times for the same issue.
Car has now been with the garage since 26/08/25 as its a software issue not a screen/ camera issue which even MG themselves dont seem to be able to resolve( madness that MG can’t resolve issues with their vehicles)
We werw advised by the dealership that our vehicle is not the first this has happened to) and seems to be a common issue with the newer model of the HS.
MG.co.uk customer service is appauling they dont acknowledge when you email, get in touch basically once they have your money they do not care.
I would definately advise not to buy an MG vehicle just for the poor / lacking / non existent customer service.
We still have no idea when or if they can resolve the issues so we can have our vehicle back.
Mg3 Hybrid SE Faults/ Over revving…
I purchased a new mg3 Hybrid SE after test driving the Hybrid model 4 times at different dealerships.
I drove them on different types of roads both town, mixed, motorway with no concerns.
For my first 400 miles no issues then all of a sudden my car has started revving around 4500+5000 revs on motorways. The car won't go into top gear for a mile or so and just screams it's head off before dropping down to 2500rpm. During the over revving the accelerator pedal vibrates through your foot!
There is definitely a fault with these cars as it revs it's engine like it's going to blow up...then the revs drop down and goes into top gear...then the engine goes off for a short spell even doing 70mph then starts and revs it's engine to the max again to charge the battery! (The engine shouldn't go off at motorway speeds as it just needs to scream the hell out of the engine again as it's just wasted the battery)
I contacted my dealership in Dundee where I purchased it only to get a response saying it's a characteristic of the vehicle and it's not a fault. THEY NEVER EVEN CHECKED THE VEHICLE OR SOFTWARE
It's only started doing it and none of the 4 different cars I drove previously did this!
It's certainly not as advertised.
MG UK online brochure says "Refined drive at all times"
I have never experienced a car revving as high! It sounds like it's going to blow up!
MG UK need to get a grip with these cars and sort out the computer software to sort out the screaming engine!
MG customer service is non-existent!
WARNING TO ANYONE THINKING OF BUYING AN MG3 HYBRID...DONT!
I've had Toyota hybrids which work perfectly but MG Hybrids aren't fit for purpose!

BE AWARE OF BEING SCAMMED IN WORDS OF AFTER SALES SERVICES AT DEES OF CROYDON MG
WORST EXPERIENCE AT DEES OF CROYDON MG SERVICE CENTRE AND AUTHORISED DEALER
I booked an appointment on 7th July for a coolant storage leakage. The earliest slot I was given was 8th August – already a month later. A week before that appointment, I was told staff were on leave and it was pushed back to 15th September. Now yet again, I’ve received another message saying the appointment is being rebooked.
This is absolutely unacceptable. A service centre representing MG should not treat customers this poorly. Making someone wait months for a repair and then repeatedly cancelling shows a complete lack of professionalism, organisation, and respect for customers’ time.
This is a big zero in quality of service. Be warned before buying a vehicle from this showroom – after-sales service here is appalling. If you value your time and money, I strongly recommend choosing another location for your MG servicing and support.
The warranty is not worth considering…
The warranty is not worth considering when purchasing a MG the clutch, goes around 25,000 miles the paint work rust out within 4/5 years the alloy wheels peel after 2 years and the ZS in particular struggles to pass HGV motors if on a hill .all the above are not covered by warranty despite the claim 7 years read the small print before purchase also door handles stick all the time the service schedule is expensive despite the low price range of the vehicle .
By far the worst car I have ever purchased.
Excellent staff especially Barbara at…
Excellent staff especially Barbara at Stockport who dealt with me on the repairs side.
She made sure we were comfortable whilst waiting for car to have part replaced. Very efficient from walking in to walking out.
Steer clear don’t use this garage
They had my MG for a full day and couldn’t reprogram the BCM they didn’t think to tell me earlier so I sat and waited for 8 hours! Got told the part I needed wasn’t covered under warranty!
Had no choice but to rebook it In 8 weeks ago to get a phone call 2 days before it was due In to be told they hadn’t ordered the part so it wouldn’t be getting done! No apology, nothing they couldn’t care less, I will never use this garage again! Stay clear they are useless.
shocking after service from mg
This has been our worst car experience. My husband and I bought a MG HS trophy last year from the dealer in Scarborough, it was only just over one year old with approximately 4500 miles on the clock. We have had the car under a year and it has been in for repair for the last 3 weeks due to an oil leak. Apparently it is a gear box leak which is covered by the warranty.
The service department require a special tool to access the gear box, the tool is currently unavailable and unlikely to be with the service department for several weeks.
What a disgrace, we wish we had never bought the car.
MG HS Trophy
I bought a new MG HS Trophy earlier this year and loved the car, I went back to MG Portsmouth just to get something fixed, with the
MG Ismart and I ended up taking to Sundeep about another car but this time MG HS Trophy Hybrid+
I went for a test drive and liked it I left it with that, next day I went back with my friend and I ended up getting the MG HS Hybrid+
And my friend bought the one I had,
Sundeep Is a great salesman I do recommend him to anyone that are going to Richmond motor, MG Portsmouth
Beware Servicing Requirements
A selling point with MG is the six year warranty. However service records are kept on their system and there isn't a log book to records servicing. Only MG garages have access to their system. As a result the warranty may be voided unless you use MG to service the car. This wasn't made clear to me at the point of purchase.
Service With A Smile
Visited Richard Hardie, Silverlink, this afternoon. Paul, Service Manager, was so helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. He resolved the problem for me and I cannot thank him enough. Excellent service Paul. Thank you.
