I tried to place an order with this shop. The order went through fine but then I received an email from them saying that I had to provide ID and a picture of me holding said ID (KYC). Nowhere on the site did it mention this as a requirement.
I messaged them back querying the request - simple questions e.g. how long would they hold the data, who, if anyone, would they pass it on to.
Instead of answering these simple questions, I was met by another demand to provide ID and a selfie with my ID. At this point I emailed them asking them to cancel the order - I was not comfortable proceeding because they'd failed to answer very basic questions.
They ignored this email and didn't cancel the order until I called them - the man who answered told me the order hadn't shipped because I had not completed KYC. He agreed to cancel the order but they made sure to charge a 'handling fee' for doing nothing.
It now transpires that apparently KYC isn't necessary - they are happy to proceed without it - or at least this is what they told another customer - proof on Reddit - they won't let me post a link, so search in r/Oppo for "Mobyshop is suspicious"
I have archived that thread on Archive dot ph add this to the end of web address: /uSw4U
The pertinent quote from Mobyshop's Winston is: "When we stated that we could proceed with the order and asked for your preferred declared value, we intended to offer you the option of proceeding without completing the KYC verification"
I was never offered this. If it's not a legal requirement, why were they so insistent on getting a picture of me and my ID?
