Very Poor Food Quality and Taste

Wet for an evening meal to PE Bromley, ordered bruschetta, polenta chips, and two pizzas — Funghi Di Bosco and Giardiniera. The food that arrived was frankly unacceptable.

The dishes were lukewarm, completely lacking in flavour, and appeared stale and poorly prepared. The pizzas were particularly bad — dry, tough, and so difficult to cut that even using the pizza slicer was a struggle. The bases felt almost inedible, and overall the meal resembled reheated cupboard food rather than freshly prepared restaurant food.

This was not simply a slightly disappointing meal; it was genuinely one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in a very long time. I have eaten at PizzaExpress many times over the years and previously regarded it as a dependable and enjoyable place to dine. The quality on this occasion was shockingly poor and far below any reasonable standard I would expect from your brand.

Saving Pizza Express

On the 2nd of April, I emailed Paula Mackenzie - the CEO of Pizza Express to inform her of my experience in the Basildon branch of Pizza Express.

This is an abridged version of the scenario I laid out in the email . . .

I arrived at the restaurant at 8:05 in the evening - it was barely half full. I was turned away along with two other couples on the basis of “we can’t see your table through before closing time at 9 o’clock”

The person who delivered that edict happened to be the branch manager.

I suggested to him the reason for turning people away from the restuarant was all the online orders, as evidenced by the lengthy queue of Uber/Just Eat drivers waiting at the desk.

He denied this was the case.

However, having been a Pizza Express customer (and a shareholder at one time) for over 50 years, I was well aware that you can sit down and enjoy a pizza, quite comfortably, in under 45 minutes.

The only other possible explanation would have been lack of staff - as I surveyed the scene in front of me, this was not the case

So I wrote to Paula MacKenzie expressing my concern about the future of the business. I explained what I’d experienced, that I’ve been a long-term customer and I have a great deal of affection for the brand.

I suggested, if this was happening across the Pizza Express estate, then a great deal of revenue was being lost from the restaurants.

Twelve days passed with no response.

So I wrote a follow-up email saying I understood the pressures of a CEO were many and varied, with multiple demands on their time.

I politely requested that she give my email a moment of attention and respond accordingly.

A month has now passed without that response or indeed any acknowledgement of my email

If you care for Pizza Express as a brand, and as somewhere to enjoy a convivial evening with friends and family, and you would like to see it survive in its present form - i.e. High Street restaurants rather than just an online business - please make your views known to -,

paula.mackenzie - the rest of her email address is readily available online.

Maybe, if enough people express an opinion on this, she may take some action to secure the future of this element of the business before Pizza Express morphs into just an online business

Or worst still, succumbs to market pressures and bad management, thus disappearing altogether.

Terrible experience at Pizza Express in…

Terrible experience at Pizza Express in Radlett, London. We visited for lunch with a group of nursery mums and young children. The children were happily talking and playing amongst themselves when, without warning, a man from another table loudly shouted “shut up” at them across the restaurant. The children were understandably startled and upset by the aggressive outburst.

We raised the issue with the manager, but the response was very disappointing. We were simply told that she could speak to the man, with no apology or reassurance offered to us as customers. It certainly did not feel like a welcoming or family-friendly environment.

Thank you to the Reading Pizza Express team

A big thank you to the Reading Pizza Express team, especially Marco and Anthony, for making our experience so lovely! There was a slight issue with miscommunication but they handled it so well and we really enjoyed our meal. The manager, James, was also very accommodating of our large party by providing us with a set menu and a seamless pre-order system.

Won’t be going back

Three of us for lunch and we were advised, after the drinks had arrived, that all three of us needed to download the app to take advantage of the special lunch offer. No mention of that before and no mention on the advert which drew us in. My son eventually managed it but my wife and I, both in our seventies, stood no chance. We debated going somewhere else which didn’t demand downloading an app just to get a pizza but in the end decided to stay. Needless to say our enjoyment of the lunch was ruined.
So, a number of questions arise from this experience:-
1. Why does Pizza Express expect everyone at a table to download the app? Surely one is quite enough? There are plenty of restaurants advertising lunch specials without the need to download even one app!
2. Does Pizza Express not understand that those of us of a certain age have zero tolerance to digital technology and cannot perceive of having to download an app just to get a pizza?
3. I understand that Pizza Express are struggling-why then do they go out of their way to put customers off? I for one will take my custom elsewhere in future.
4. From reading the reviews of Pizza Express even if you’re able to download the app it frequently doesn’t work.
5. I suspect the Advertising Standards Authority would have something to say about the misleading advertising for the special lunch.
So the result of all this is that Pizza Express have lost yet more customers totally unnecessarily….

Special shout out to Wayne in London Greenwich branch!

Greenwich London branch:
What a wonderful, thoughtful team. I called about a missing dressing on my last Deliveroo order and spoke to an absolutely lovely guy called Wayne on 7th Feb around 8pm — he deserves real recognition. He apologised, asked if I wanted a dessert or drink (I said no!), and then went above and beyond anyway. I was blown away to receive three desserts, three dressings, and a drink. Outstanding customer service. Highly, highly recommend. Thank you so much!

Visited pizza express at Edinburgh airport

Visited pizza express at Edinburgh Airport and was greeted by a lovely young lady called Leah. Was extremely pleasant and friendly. Didn’t rush us for order and was very chatty. Food came out nice and hot and was delicious. Leah thanked us at the end. Very happy with this service. Credit to the company for your professionalism at such a young age. I think you will go far in hospitality Leah . Hopefully see you on our next holiday :)

Don't go there

Where to start. On arrival kept waiting by the door, no greeting, no-one interested. Finally sat down but again no-one interested. I had overheard customers complaining about errors on their bills and waiting for 2 hours for 2 pizzas so I asked the manager before we (party of 7) ordered whether it was going to be a long wait. He obviously didn't care and just repeated "it's up to you" whether we stayed or went. We decided to stay but the "couldn't care less" attitude is terrible. The manager said that they were too busy but there were fewer than 50% of the tables occupied.
1 pizza was missed off the order so was delivered late. Garlic bread did not arrive until we had all finished our food. Just terrible. Don't go there.

Visited Pizza Express Plymouth and…

Visited Pizza Express Plymouth and honestly left more confused than anything else.
When it came to paying, I asked to use my Blue Light Card and was told it’s not valid on Fridays. That in itself is questionable, but what really stood out was that when I asked why, the waitress had absolutely no idea.
So apparently emergency service workers are appreciated… just not at the end of the week? Should we all make sure we only go out Monday–Thursday to be “recognised”?
It’s not even about the money — it’s the principle and how poorly it’s handled. If you’re going to advertise support for Blue Light workers, at least make it consistent and make sure your staff understand the policy.
Left a bit of a sour taste after what was otherwise a decent meal.

Pizzaexpress Cannock poor service

Pizzaexpress Cannock is very disappointing. We have been turned away from there twice now. Last night we arrived just after 6 and they told us there was a 45 minute wait for tables. Despite half the tables being empty, some of which still had the debris from the previous customer. They were just trying to get rid of us so that they could close up early. Won't be going back there again.

Things are not always what they seem!!

Went to Pizza Express Farnham today, what a surprise I got when I ordered a Leggera pizza, which I enjoy normally due to the salad pizza combo, but not today! There was a huge portion of rocket obviously used to hide the fact the hole cut out the centre has increased! Basically it’s a pizza crust with salad for an extortionate cost, shocking and very disappointing!

Pizza Express is a total joke

Pizza Express is a total joke, one of the worst restaurants ive been in. we had a terrible meal in Stamford and the hQ staff were useless in my complaint. so my advice, avoid all PE restaurants unless you want to eat poorly. the salads are awful and the starters tiny. avoid.
