Great service and customer care. But it’s a catch 22

Primare has a NP5 Prisma update Program. Qualified owners who own an old model (pre) amp with the Old MM30 network module can get a 50% discount on the NP5 Prisma Mk2 network player to replace the Old MM30.

I own a Primare Pre60 and contacted customer service. Within just one hour they replied that I am eligible for the discount (based on serial number on the amplifier). Within a few days the NP5 was delivered. I was very impressed with service and customer care from Primare.

But…the NP5 is a horrible piece of equipment. Very chromecast based instead of UPnp/DLNA based. Memory and buffer is so small that it can’t handle changes in samplerates. In practice it can only handles 44.1 and 48kHz files. Going to a 96kHz file the NP5 will go in lock for 100% and needs to be reset.

Sound wise it’s a great player. No doubt about it. The money went into creating a great coax output stage at the cost of having a decent buffer and memory that handles at least 96 kHz files.

So in the end it always the same. If the discount offer sounds to good to be true there’s always a catch or something wrong.
