Excellent service.

Proalloys recently refurbished two of my Range Rover wheels and carried out a fantastic job. Would definitely recommend and will be using this service again. Thank you.

I’m no expert but expected my shiny new…

I’m no expert but expected my shiny new wheels to last more than a year. Silly me. Apparently, I’m told by them that there are no guarantees and this often happens. I don’t recall being told this but they say it is also stamped all over their invoice (that’s useful information after you have paid). My only bit of advice would be ‘don’t bother’. Unless you are happy to pay £400-£500 a year to have pretty wheels. I won’t be going back that’s for sure.

I don't really do reviews

I don't really do reviews, and negative ones are not a great way to spend your time. But hopefully if someone reads this and doesn’t spend their money at ProAlloy it will be worth it.

First a bit on me. I have been restoring cars and bicycles since I was a kid as a hobby. I now sometimes work in the motor industry. I have a magazine feature 1963 VW camper with all the suspension and brakes powdercoated for the past 15 years - and it all still look great. I’ve also had 3 mountain bike frames powder coated, and you can imaging the knocks they take. In the past 20 years I’ve used 4 powder coaters from Clevedon, London, Devizes and (sigh!!!) ProAlloys in Melksham. So I know what quality of finish I can expect from powdercoating, and what impacts a good coat of powder paint can take. I feel reasonably well versed on the subject of powdercoating to write an honest review about my experience.

So I picked up a used family estate car and noticed the (smart repair) paint that Audi had done on the wheels to make the car look good on their forecourt was a bit shabby. So I decided to get the 4 wheels done properly and powdercoated in the silver finish that they would have had from new.

ProAlloys of Melksham is not far from me and said on their website that they did the whole process from tyres off to tyres back on again. Stripping the wheel, blasting completely before a powdercoating. I liked the idea of going to a wheel place as they would do the full tyres, valves and balancing.

I dropped the wheels off and collected them two days later looking like a newly painted wheel should, shiny. I was surprised to be greeted with an additional charge to straighten a wheel that I was told was buckled. They had not contacted me about this work/cost before repairing it and had no way to show me the buckled. My car didn't have even the slightest shudder from the wheels that would have suggested a buckled. They just presented me with that additional cost of repair!

On putting the wheels back on the car I dropped the locking wheel socket and immediately chipped the wheels. Whilst this was totally my fault I was surprised it chipped, and the coating fell away from the primer, it seemed very brittle and not very well adhered ti the surface. I touched this up as I had no choice but to move on and get the car back on the road as its used daily.

Being a car person I like my stuff to be clean and I look after my car. I dont let brake dust build up on the wheels and its cleaned regularly. But a year and half on and the wheels look as tatty and shabby as before. The lacquer seems to be coming off at the edges and chipping in all the corners.

I have been back to the owner of the company for a conversation and asked why my powdercoated wheels are actually primer, paint and lacquer. I was just given the brush off. Out of warranty, not our problem. They don't seem to be bothered that they are selling Powdercoated wheels on their website, but then doing primer, paint and lacquer. If I'd know this was the process they were doing, not what they say on their website, I would have taken them somewhere else. Its because I know paint and lacquer is not upto the job for wheels. This approach has resulted in a very poor topcoat that is not resistant to day to day car wheel usage.

During my conversation with the owner he said he had customers who return every few years to get their wheels redone to keep them looking nice. And he said he tells his customers that as they are not new wheels you cant expect them to be perfect. I don’t agree, a powdercoated wheel should not need to be redone every few years if its done properly first time and then looked after. Also a tidy wheel (which mine were) that is stripped, blasted, prepared and recoated should be able to achieve a high finish and stay in that condition for many years. My wheels are primer, paint and lacquer which is not what I was lead to believe I was getting when you read their Standard Refurbishment process on their website.

My advice is if you are looking for your wheels restored so they will last and stay smart, look somewhere else. I've since spoken to two other companies in the area of Wiltshire and Bristol. Both offer a powdercoat finish not paint and lacquer. Both do a full tyres off and back on again service. In my case ProAlloys dont seem interest in sorting out work they have done that is not what we agreed.

Wheel looks new

Great service and an extremely professional job. I put my car in to this company as the alloy wheel was damaged by a valet company. I have now got my car back and the alloy wheels looks brand new. Fantastic job!

Like new Wheels

Great company to deal with. I've used multiple (more local) alloy repairs companies in the past but I favour this company since the attention to detail and finish seems superior. I'm an aerospace engineer myself so like to understand the processes and details of the repairs. This company strips the alloy completely back before refinishing. The results are like-new and have no problem recommending them. Only wish they were closer.
