Penalty Fees

TaxCloud will my charge my CC, and every once in a while they have an issue with being rejected. No one knows why, but TaxCloud will then charge me $100 penalty fee, which they charge to my CC, and have no issues receiving payment. This has been very frustrating. They will not issue a credit, even after it is clear that it is indeed working.

Server failures occur too frequently

Server failures occur too frequently. Customer support not very responsive. Lookups lost causing errors trying to capture taxes.

Hi Glen - Thanks for your review. We'd like to understand more about the Lookup failures you are experiencing. We are not seeing this broadly amongst our client base. Often, timeouts or errors have nothing to do with the API endpoints but can be impacted by network storms or outages. Please reach to our support team to share more. Thanks!

Good service, but two big issues.

If you live in a state that has automatic compliance, then it's a good product. If you live in a state that is not in the SST, they will charge you a fee for every transaction in the state. Apparently there is no way to turn that off and we are continually billed for transactions in our state that we do not want. We are currently looking at options to move to a different company as it was not clear when we signed up that this is how it would work.

Update: It's nice that we can receive a review response within 24 hours, but customer service responses take days and weeks a time. What is not transparent is that we apparently are not allowed to opt-out of automatic calculations for certain non-member states. As we calculate and file our own sales taxes in the non-member states, we do not want to pay for a service we do not use and have no need for. This is especially considering our home state, which is a non-member state, is our primary sales location. The fees add up and hurt our small business. We have updated our recent experience rating from 2 to 1 stars.

Thanks for your review. The law is that you have to collect sales tax in the state(s) where you have physical presence - why would you want to turn that state(s) off? As you use our state paid service in our 25 member states (at no cost to you), we charge a 0.5% fee for sales in non-member states, which equates to a $50 fee per $10,000 in sales. Our pricing is transparently described on our website at https://taxcloud.com/pricing. This fee declines baed on volume per our Terms of Service which can be found at https://taxcloud.com/tos in Exhibit A. We'd love to keep your business and sincerely doubt you will find a greater value than TaxCloud.

Update on 8/27/20 - We emailed the client asking to discuss the negative review with no reply. This is an odd "issue" - how/why would a merchant like our member state (state paid) service, but then calculate their sales tax in non-member states (fee-based service) on their own somehow?

Decent price but atrocious customer service

Although taxcloud is a decent price, their customer service is atrocious. Any time I call I always get an answering service that will send support a message. Then I never get contacted by support. If I email support there is maybe a 50/50 chance I don't get a response and I have to loop some personal emails into the mix to get any answer.

Got charged monthly fees by them when…

Got charged monthly fees by them when it was only supposed to take a percentage of tax collected. Complained and was lied to that it would be taken care of. I would never recommend this company to anyway.

Thanks for the review. We don't have a service offering that takes a percentage of tax collected so unclear what you are talking about. Pricing for our two service options can be found on our website at https://taxcloud.com/pricing.

Worry-free

I like using TaxCloud because it's easy and worry-free. Recently I had an issue with the Simple Sales Tax plug-in on my website and I was upset because I dreaded trying to learn enough to fix it. I called TaxCloud support, got through immediately, the fix was simple, and it was emailed to me in a timely manner. That's the only issue I've had, but knowing that support is accessible and accommodating has put my mind at ease about using TaxCloud.

Hi Joseph - We are sorry if you have had trouble getting to our support team. Regarding pricing, you may want to look at switching to our Selective Compliance service option as you don't sell too much in SST states and have the bulk of sales in one non-SST state. The transaction or API based pricing plan might save you money.

We were contacted by a faraway state…

We were contacted by a faraway state saying that we filed a "negative return" and that they don't allow negative returns. Of course, TaxCloud filed the return. The state should not have contacted us directly, they should have contacted TaxCloud as they are our Certified Service Provider (CSP) for that state. We did have a slow response from TaxCloud and I wish they had better follow through. Frankly, I wish they had a system with trouble tickets that we could see so that any and all interactions for an issue would be shown there. We could mark a ticket resolved or reopen it.

Eventually, after several ways of contacting them, we got the issue resolved. We are remaining with TaxCloud and they do provide an excellent value (they have filed 684 returns, over a 27 month period, and all we've paid was $13 for that service). I wish we could add a reasonable amount (say $5/month) and get trouble ticketing that would guarantee that no issue went unresolved. Their competitors charge an obscene amount that and those fees would crush us.

Overcharge because of api issues

Can not get support , over charge for api issues latest bill is $400 for a $49 selective compliance plan. even developer have not been able to fix and just push blame. Stay away customer support does not exist. Will be leaving as soon as possible.

Update

All I want is the API to tell customer how much to charge And it does and that’s not a month late. I am on selective compliance you are not reporting my transactions so why should it matter if you received them at all ?

Please reach out to my developer because I have had zero luck getting a reply unless it’s been sent in this review.

We apologize if you are having trouble getting to our support team. The fees you mention are being charged because you are sending us transactions for a month after our deadline of the 10th of the following month. If you look in the Invoices area of TaxCloud portal, you can click in the invoice line item and it will show you the specific transactions that were late. You can avoid those charges by getting monthly transactions into the system by the 10th of the following month.

California reports are bad

California reports are bad, many tax districts are inaccurate or expired or unknown. Don't see how it could be worst.
