Do not recommend

Do not recommend

- The massage and treatment area was uncomfortably cold, making it difficult to relax when I was shivering and had goosebumps.
- Although we booked in advance, it took over 45 minutes for the afternoon tea to be served, which was disappointing.
- The dressing gown provided had a hole in the left shoulder and yellowed around the neck, which fell below the standard of luxury we were expecting.
- Basic spa facility, nothing special, we do not recommend.

Disappointing experience

We visited the Mere mid-November for afternoon tea.

Whilst the food was very nice, the staff failed to mention when booking that the main restaurant would be unavailable, and instead we would be seated in a makeshift building (which comprised several tables for guests and a small 'shop' in one corner that sold golfing accessories).

Dining out for a special occasion is not just about the food - the surroundings and ambience are just as important.

We expected much better.

Coach party Sunday Lunch

We attended as a coach party 50+.
The room was cold as the air-conditioning was on, end of October. Some off our party complained about the meals being nearly cold. My own meal was ok, meat was lovely but roast potatoes hard and Yorkshire pudding very dry. The vegan meal was very poor. A small bowl of gnocchi in green pesto sauce didn't look at all appetising and very poor value for money. This was changed for a small plate of vegetables and hard roast potatoes. The customer did complain to the duty manager, but the complaint wasn't taken seriously . Poor customer service.
Avoid if Vegan !

I visited for a spa day with a couple…

I visited for a spa day with a couple of friends for a birthday treat for one of them. The reception staff were lovely, afternoon tea and staff in restaurant lovely. The spa area very basic. One sauna smelt really bad, another wasn’t on at all and the salt room didn’t appear to be doing anything, there looked like a place where a bowl of something should be but wasn’t. This meant there was 1 small sauna and steam room for everyone. I had either a facial or full body massage with the package. Once in the treatment room I selected the massage, the therapist didn’t seem very happy about it when I selected the massage and said it will just be a very light relaxing massage not a firm one. Then once on the bed I had my arms bent up at the sides of my head and the therapist said very sternly arms by your sides. I was really uncomfortable but didn’t feel like I could say. Her tummy was also completely resting on the back of my head during the treatment which made it even more uncomfortable. It was very clear she did not want to do the massage. It was extremely light and was very obvious that she couldn’t be bothered. I talked all the way through to pass the time and feeling of awkwardness. It most definitely was not an hour but I didn’t mind. She asked at one point if I get regular massages and I replied I own a salon so try to but not as often as I should. She commented that someone saying they were a therapist used to make her feel on edge but not any more. I wasn’t trying to make someone feel on edge I was just answering the question. The mere are getting lots of work done and I feel they are not keeping on top of the current facilities while this is being completed.

Exceptional Customer Service

My mother and I booked a spa day at the Mere as we had been recommended a few times and wanted to try it. There was an issue with the time of our booking coupled with the fact that a staff member was off sick so they didn't have the usual capacity/flexibility to rebook our treatments.

Chris was the team member who was serving us and sorting all of this out for us. I have to say Chris was absolutely fantastic and I will definitely be coming back due to how he dealt with the situation. He was extremely courteous and had great resolution skills, his communication with us and his colleagues was exemplary. We never had to explain what had happened to another team member as he'd already filled his colleagues in on the situation so everyone was up to speed.

I run a customer service company and I was truly impressed by Chris and the rest of the team (the treatment was amazing as well) and will be booking the mere whenever I next need a spa day! - Melissa T

The Mere used to be a lovely place but…

The Mere used to be a lovely place but it is unfortunately now tired and feels like it’s going down hill. I appreciate that the hotel is being renovated but the spa area is just poor.
There are dirty towels everywhere on loungers which get left for hours even after people have left. There’s then nowhere to sit if you arrive after the first lot of visitors.
Empty glasses on every table and it just appears unclean as they are rarely collected.
The relax room after a massage is freezing cold.
Cleaning stuff left on the side in the changing areas with no cleaner on site.
Just very disappointing and not at all how it used to be.
I’ll come back when it’s been renovated and there is new management.

Very upsetting and disgusting!!
The lamp shade were covered on spider cobwebs and spider hanging, no help from reception. It was my birthday weekend and at midnight had to drag our stuff to move to another room with no help or assistance. Absolutely appalling!!

Overnight anniversary stay

Overnight anniversary stay

Beautiful grounds - we started our stay in the spa and had an amazing massage and facial each, the facilities are so clean and really relaxing

Staff very welcoming

Only issue was that we was told we could wear our robes to lunch as our room wasn’t available yet, got to lunch and told we had to get changed so we wasn’t happy and said we could eat in our rooms but they weren’t available - The manager kindly gave us an upgrade to a room available. We then had the best chicken wraps!

Evening meal in browns was delicious - the chef is incredible.

Lucinda and Alex were so welcoming. Natalie on reception lovely too!

Breakfast was delicious - ready to pop as couldn’t stop eating all the goodness!

Would definitely come back, it’s beautiful. Wish we had longer

What a fantastic hotel

What a fantastic hotel. Hotel rooms were spacious and well thought out. The heated floors were a touch, The food was incredible, the staff were really friendly and helpful, service was first class . We celebrated my 50th Birthday and they really could not do enough for me, a desert in the room, red petals on my bed, another dessert at afternoon tea and a free cocktail at dinner. I can't wait to go back. Situated in the perfect location for a romantic getaway and a simple night away of indulgence. special mention to Alex, Becky and Bella

Absolutely First Class

Absolutely first class treatment. We booked a Serenity Spa day and from our reception greeting to our treatments, afternoon tea and pool side time, we were treated like super stars, nothing was too much trouble. Our Spa treatments were just perfect, the best we’ve had. We will definitely be back for a longer stay.
If I could leave 10 stars I would ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Business & golfers only

My husband and I decided to come here to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. I did tell reception this when I booked, hoping they’d try to make it that bit more special but I was told anything I wanted would be extra. This was never acknowledged.
We’d booked a suite and had high expectations. Mine dropped as soon as I saw, in blue neon capitals on the beautiful gateway entrance, THE MERE.
Fine dining is in the lobby - it reminds me of my old university canteen and there was nothing in the way of luxury to be found there.
The suite - 217 - is purely a cavernous Travelodge-type area: living/dining area with very tired chipboard furniture. Scratched tables, stained sofas, a sideboard with a glass top which skidded off as I held on to it (I’m disabled and often use furniture to steady myself)…I nearly went flying with a large pane of glass.
Enormous bathroom, which was, admittedly, beautiful - except for the high pitched whine of the extractor fan. I thought my tinnitus was playing up to be honest. No way of turning it off unless you went in in the pitch black. The loo was so low slung, it was reminiscent of those found in a primary school. As for flushing the damned thing - you need to have a steroid fuelled thumb. No good for a woman with long nails at all.
Room service menu. Mere burger…soggy, stringy McD’s type things, burned at the end; “vegan fish & chips”…this was a culinary nightmare and one I won’t forget in a hurry. It’s still repeating on me now. I managed 1/2 one fillet, a few chips and then gave up. The warm breads were those you buy part baked from Tesco, then bake off in your own oven. The dip…urgh! A bowl of what tasted like sunflower oil, and a teaspoon of balsamic. Basically, you’re just dipping warmed up rolls in Spry Crisp n Dry. Vile.
Today I’ve been nauseous, sluggish and I can still feel a heavy weight in my stomach.
I was just relieved I’d brought some sandwiches!!
Both of us felt ill afterwards. So a nice warm bubble bath to relax…one raggedy bathrobe between two of us.
Snacks (biscuits) are £1.50. A tiny box of chocolates £3.25. Two sweeteners, one hot chocolate sachet
This is a vast McMansion in beautiful grounds - only accessible to golfers.
Rooms are tired & tatty, with cheap & nasty furniture. Food is chucked in to a deep fat fryer and thrown on a plate. Maintenance needs to overhaul the place.
We left after 3 hours. Genuinely! And I’ve never been so happy to get home from our monthly treats of hotel overnights.

We’re purportedly getting a call from management to discuss this dêbacle. Will we?
My gut says no, but let’s give them the benefit of the doubt, eh?
These are all the negatives. A few positives: clean; warm; a balcony so we could smoke; friendly, but very bored-looking staff who looked pretty scruffy on the whole, in the dining areas; beautiful views.
And best of all, a couple was desperate for a room as my husband checked us out. As it was fully booked, he turned to them and said, “We’re checking out because this place is horrible”. He then turned to the receptionist and said, Let them have our room. The couple offered to reimburse my husband who refused and simply said, “You take it. We’ve paid fully, whether we stay or not. Just have it.” He told front of house that in no way they should be charged as the room was fully paid up - bed, breakfast and evening meals.
So, hopefully they’ll have got their bed, which they really needed.
So we paid £100/hour for the “privilege” of a glorified Premier Inn.

A Silver Wedding Anniversary Celebration Night to Remember

We hosted our Silver Wedding Anniversary Party here. I can’t praise the hotel and the staff enough. They were all fantastic and we had a brilliant night. A special mention for Janice Crosby who was the events organiser. She was very down to earth, very flexible & accommodating to make the day very special. The food was delicious, well presented & hot & timely bearing in mind the large number of guests we were catering for. Adam, the manager on the day made sure everything was like clockwork. All the staff were fantastic from the waiters, concierge, portering right through to the breakfast staff in the morning. Thank you. Sanchoy & Jeanette
