"never miss an opportunity"
For quite a few years now the Tax Refund Company ha checked up annually without fail to see that I have paid the exact amount of tax. They do this for a small fee, yes, but for a small amount of work submitted by you, they could get a tax refund from the HMRC that you were unaware of. Worth doing to keep your tax records in order especially so if you change jobs fairly regularly. I would highly recommend.

You're absolutely right in that it's worth checking as virtually all of the clients that we obtain refunds and tax code corrections for were totally unaware that they had been paying too much tax.
It is also worth pointing out that we only charge a fee if we find our customers a refund, if there is no refund due then our service is totally free of charge.

Difficult form to fill
Difficult form to fill. Had to constantly re log into my bank. If the dates were in a drop down format you would't have to keep correcting them.
You asked for further information and told me that I didn't need to log into my bank. I had to continually look up pay, pension, work clothes, union fees for the past 4 years - I can't remember what all the questions were.

This is not something we ever ask clients to do, it's not part of our application process, we don't require client bank details for any part of what we do. Are you sure you have the right company?

Hi Jon, thanks for your review, although you seem to have missed out some key information here.
Your review suggests that you were entitled to a refund of £240 and only ended up with £10 - because we took the rest - this simply wasn't the case.
Our website gives customers an idea of what they could be due based on the information that they have provided when they provide some basic details at he beginning of the process. This is something we do to let customers know whether it's worth completing the full application or not (it can be quite lengthy) - we also let customers know at this point if we think they simply aren't due anything at all.
Once we take on an application in full, fully review the extra information we ask customers for after that point and also liaise with HMRC on our customer's behalf it can turn out that customers are already receiving some of the allowances they are entitled to and so the refund part of our service ends up smaller than we had initially hoped for. In other situations we find that customers are entitled to a larger refund than the initial indication - we never truly know until the situation has been fully resolved with HMRC.
It turned out that your situation was the former and so the refund amount was small.
However, our service is not just about the initial refund (even though that's the only part where we charge a fee) you should now see that your tax code has been adjusted and you will now be paying less tax every month, saving more and more money as time goes on.

Avoid and do it yourself so you receive what is owed
First time using the company, their details came through my professional membership. Whilst they say they document clearly that they will be paid out of your refund I dispute that. I had one peice of documentation from the company which is less than clear. In actual fact it's simpler to complete the form through HMRC which a lot of people don't know and I didnt know. I work hard and pay my taxes and every penny should come back to me, its that simple. I was due £65 and ended up with approximately £22. In future do it yourself, ask someone to help you but ideally don't lose out on what your are owed. Good luck.

Hi Ayo, thanks for getting in touch. As you've raised a number of points here we'll address them one by one.
We can see from your application that you applied in response to us offering our services to members of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists. The letter you responded to included details of our fees highlighted in bold bullet points about half way down the page. It is important to us that our customers know exactly what they are signing up for before they apply which is why we include them there. We can send you another copy if like.
But it doesn't end there. They are also included, again clearly laid out, in the terms and conditions at the beginning of the application process. When customers complete the online application they have to agree to these in order to be able to complete their application. There is also a link to the very same terms and conditions on every page of our website and there is a whole section dedicated to fees in the FAQ page of our website, we've even including a short video explaining how they work.
None of the above can be disputed, although we do appreciate that you did apply quite a while ago back in November so you could possibly have forgotten.
With regards to it being simpler to complete the form through HMRC - well that all depends on your knowledge of UK tax, most things are relatively straight forward if you know what you're doing. The challenge here is that most people don't understand tax, the allowances available, whether they are entitled to any of them, how much they could be due or how to go about getting it back. If HMRC made it easy and straight forward we wouldn't be in business and to put things into perspective - we've been in business helping tax payers get their money back for almost 30 years now.
And finally with regards to the total amount you were due and the amount you received - we normally charge a percentage of any refund but for refunds under £100 we have to charge a minimum fee of £38 to cover our costs. This is excellent value for a full review of your tax situation, try getting a quote from an accountant for the same level of service and you'll find it's a lot more expensive. Chances are they won't guarantee their work in the same way that we do either (we guarantee to pay any tax demands caused by our work).
Again it doesn't end there though, you should now see that your tax code has also been changed. This means that you will now be paying less tax every month, potentially for years to come, meaning that you will be a lot better off than the initial £22 refund you received, all for what turned out to be a one off fee of just £38.
