We travelled to China with Wendy Wu and had the time of our lives! From the beginning, the organisation was impecable. Plenty of information before travel and access to agents to discuss needs available and timely. Visa application can be protracted and difficult though, and agents at the visa centre not so amiable!
We arrived in Shanghai and were greeted by lovely guide Dawn and our driver Mr Wan, who were ours for the duration of our time in the city.
Our guides in each of our visits were exemplary. Knowledgable and amiable, answering questions and enquiries with depth and accommodating requests with ease.
Dawn was exemplary in preparing us for our long train ride to Yichang to join our river cruise. We really missed her!
In Chengdu, Julie made our explorations easy and informative . In X’ian. Lucky was absolutely delightful and very knowledgable. In Beijing Lily shared her humour and wisdom readily and we gained so much from her expertise.
It did however, sometimes feel as though we were hurried along to fit everything in. I understand that the daily dynamics of life in China for its people is very focused and different to western lifestyles. Perhaps this is what people mean by feeling ‘rushed’ .
Travelling from place to place on trains and cruise ships was Impressively efficient, and at each station.we were guided fully to our platforms, train carriage reservations and destinations. Absolutely 1st class. We only had one guide who left us to fend for ourselves after our river cruise.
Our drivers were also exceptional. Gentlemen with perfect manners! Rallying us around from place to place and looking after us with a smile and a bottle of water!
The hotels were widely varied. In Shanghai the hotel was beautiful. Food passable too. The Yangtze River cruise cabin was very comfortable, but the food was absolutely dreadful! I have a shellfish allergy, and while Wendy Wu assured us there would be a mix of Chinese and western cuisine, that wasn’t entirely correct. I didn’t eat very much at all!
The Holiday Inn at Chengdu was okay. Standard and a passable breakfast. Well situated for investigating the area around it.
The Hilton Garden Inn at X’ian was perfectly situated and we loved the area, but the hotel staff were sullen, rude and unhelpful. We had an issue with the air conditioning that remained unresolved through poor assistance from the staff, but Wendy Wu made a great gesture by giving us free tickets for the following stay in Beijing to visit an acrobat show which went a little way to compensating for two horrendous, sleepless nights while we were overheated, having to have the window open to alleviate it only to be constantly disturbed by street noise and car horns.
Our Novotel Peace Hotel in Beijing was beautiful, and very international, but breakfast was just a farce. No plates, food limited for westerners and a distinct lack of operating coffee machines sadly.
In all, we had a truly amazing experience and met some wonderful people along the way, but there are a few things that Wendy Wu needs to consider appraising. Not least local temperatures in different parts. We were advised to pack ‘layers’. On our river cruise, the temperatures reached a melting 33-34 degrees! We were completely unprepared for the level of heat and humidity in the first half of our journey. We should have packed much more summer wear.
Would we travel with Wendy Wu again? Absolutely! We loved it (mostly)💖we visited world heritage sites and saw things we’d only read about or seen on tv. An amazing journey.

Just a word of warning about WW China by land Japan by Sea itinerary — during our recent tour, we were asked to pay around £75 each in tips, which seemed excessive given there were 22 of us in the group. That adds up to £137.50 per day for the guide to use — and that’s excluding the cruise portion!
When we questioned it, we were told the tips also covered the week onboard the Spectrum, even though we weren’t with the guide then. The explanation? They “still had to pay people” while we were away — reducing it to £87 per day.
After returning home, I raised this with WW, but their response was vague and dismissive. I followed up again, only to be told — in so many words — to drop it.
I don’t think it’s right that travellers are expected to pay tips for a week when they’re not even there, on top of tips already paid on the ship. We all deserve transparency and fairness when we travel. ✈️💬
Have others experienced this too?

We have just returned from 16 days Touring China. What a well organized company, from visa's, flights, accommodation internal transfers. We had an amazing guide Lisa who made sure everything went like clock work. We saw everything we wanted to from the great wall of China, Xian, finishing off in Shanghai. With out Lisa's guidance and knowledge I think we have found it very hard to navigate around China. Would highly recommend Wendy Wu, cant wait for the next adventure.

Excellent holiday experience with an outstanding Tour Manager Yang Tao (Jason) 10 out of 10. We were given a varied experience to the sights and culture of China. We also enjoyed the culinary delights of the various regions we visited.

Our tour leader George really made the Ultimate China tour in September 2024 a great experience. George is passionate about China and goes all out to make the tour both informative and entertaining. Nothing was too much trouble for him, including personally treating my wife's scolded foot or getting some medication for me at a chemist. The Wendy Wu philosophy for making tours an excellent experience for clients was so great that we have since booked the Silk Road Explorer tour in April 2026.

Very well organised tour, with so much seen and miles covered. I would highly recommend visiting, it's a beautiful country with stunning views and history. A special mention to our tour guide, George, who genuinely cared that we had the best experience whilst on the tour and an asset to Wendy Wu.

Superb guide went the extra mile for our group, felt like a family. Sights amazing, as was the cuisine, a once in a lifetime experience that truly delivered precious memories

The overall holiday was excellent, well organised and the tour Manager Ivan was excellent (5*) with a great rapport with the group, well organised and attentive. Quality of Hotels was good and the communal eating (which we were sceptical about) was a highlight! It provides an opportunity to try many different dishes with a lot of regional variation, Ivan and the local guides took time to explain dishes which was greatly added to the experience.
The train travel was tiring (but high quality) and some of the trips in destination meant several hours on the bus for not a lot of reward in some instances - eg stone forest and tie dye. We saw very little of Kunming, Dali and Chengdu which was a shame as the group agreed they would have liked more time to explore locally. The recommended shows were all excellent and great fun.
Ivan recommended some early starts to avoid the crowds and they all paid off!
Overall a wonderful experience.

The china explorer was a fantastic trip that was incredible well organised by the guide Jason. I'm Vegetarian and Jason ensured at every mealtime that I was aware what was Vegetarian and that I've had enough food. I also had hearing problems after my flight in which on the cruise excursions Jason would repeat key facts down the headset so I could still hear going above and beyond. Jason is a fantastic asset for Wendy Wu.
The highlight of the trip was Jinshanling section of the great wall. It's a challenging hike but it is so worth it for the view and to experience the wall without many other visitors at the same time. A bonus of this trip is that you get to see two sections of the wall and really enjoyed being on the wall lit up at night. I would highly recommend this trip.

The 3 week China tour was very well organised and we were kept clearly up to date regarding each day’s itinerary by our National Guide Jason. There was a typhoon in the middle of our tour and he was able to schedule another train and nothing was missed.
The first few days were more tiring in Beijing but we were very well fed and watered. The Local Guide Steven was especially knowledgable and looked after us all very well.
Seeing the pandas in Chengdu was amazing and the Local Guide Penny was very fun and knowledgable.
I highly recommend attending the optional operas namely the Beijing Opera and the Sichuan Opera.
The Yangtze River cruise was more relaxing and the scenery was gorgeous.
Guilin’s famous mountains were spectacular and the Local Guide Samantha was again very knowledgable.
At Shanghai, I especially enjoyed the night time cruise to see Shanghai’s famous skyline. The hotel and food in Shanghai were perfect.
Of particular note, I travelled with my mum and she became unwell during the trip. Jason took time to help her communicate and seek the help required and we really appreciated the help.
I really felt we were able to experience the Chinese culture authentically, so I highly recommended this tour.

All aspects of the trip were beyond our expectations. The guides, especially Jason, were really knowledgable and attentive and I couldn’t praise them enough.
The sites we saw in China were outstanding and every day felt like a new adventure.

Our first all inclusive tour (Wonders of China) was an outstanding success.
The itinerary covered so much, we feel that we have really covered off so many of the amazing sights in China and a lot more. We would never have known about some of the places we visited if not for Wendy Wu's amazing itinerary.
Our National Guide, Amanda was fabulous - her knowledge and organisation skills are second to none. Amanda is caring, friendly and kind. Local Guides (Suzanna, Sherly and Grace) were also a special part of our trip, their local knowledge is extensive.
We felt so safe throughout our tour of China.
Thank you for such a special experience.

It was fantastic. Every day was well organised and full of exciting experiences. Our tour guide Ivan was amazing. He helped everything go smoothly and was so interesting also. I would really recommend this tour. Travelling by train allowed us to see so much of this beautiful country.

This was our first organised tour. As seniors, after some research, we thought this would be too hard to do ourselves. We were right, we wouldn't have achieved half of what Wendy Wu packed in. Not only did they over deliver, they did it in a safe, low risk and confident way. Amanda, our national tour guide was excellent, showing experience, friendship and was so proud to show off her country. She was backed up by excellent local guides in each city and faultless support crew (drivers, hotel staff etc).
Wendy Wu has delivered on her aim to make China accessible to western people. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive, but I doubt you will find better value for money out there.
