Negative Review for Amish Roofers /…

Negative Review for Amish Roofers / Owner: Eli Hershberger
503 Elkins Rd, Bedford, IN

I rarely write reviews of this nature, but my experience with Amish Roofers—owned by Eli Hershberger—warrants a clear warning to other homeowners.

My project quickly deteriorated from a simple repair into one of the most unprofessional contracting experiences I have encountered. What should have been straightforward turned into a costly and stressful situation marked by poor workmanship, miscommunication, and troubling conduct from the business owner himself.

Major Issues Experienced:

• Missing Tools (~$1,300 value)
After the work crew left, I discovered that several of my tools—valued at approximately $1,300—had gone missing. These were items stored on the back porch due to tornadoe damage prior to their arrival. No explanation or accountability was ever provided.

• Damage to Property
My driveway had noticeable damage that had to be corrected and was caused by careless driving from their worker.
My porch railing was broken after workers stood on it instead of using proper equipment. In one instance, they even cut into the old railing because they used it as a backing board rather than following basic professionalism.

• Use of My Personal Equipment
The crew used my own tools and equipment without permission during the installation. This alone demonstrates a lack of boundaries and professionalism.

• Hazardous Debris Left Behind
Roofing nails were scattered across the yard, creating safety hazards.
Sharp metal shavings were left around the property by the gutter subcontractors—careless and dangerous for anyone walking the area.

• Mismatched Materials & Poor Workmanship
Despite promising quality repairs, the crew installed plywood that did not match the existing materials and ignored basic roof-repair standards. Visible nails were left improperly driven under the shingles—an issue pointed out during and after the project, and acknowledged in the correspondence. The workmanship was amateur at best, especially given the premium price quoted.

• Dishonest Pricing Practices
Mr. Hershberger attempted to inflate the final cost by claiming additional materials were installed—materials that were never discussed, never approved, and never documented. When these charges were questioned, he shifted explanations multiple times. This contradicts the written contract and shows a clear lack of transparency.

• Threats of a Lien Before the Job Was Finished
Before the work was even completed—and long before issues were corrected—Mr. Hershberger threatened to file a lien on my property if payment was not made immediately. These threats came despite multiple unresolved problems and despite his crew’s own mistakes.

• Unprofessional Conduct
The tone of communication from Mr. Hershberger became increasingly hostile and insulting whenever concerns were raised. Rather than addressing legitimate, documented issues, he deflected responsibility and resorted to pressure tactics. For a business owner, the behavior was deeply unprofessional and contrary to the standards expected of any reputable contractor.

Final Thoughts

Homeowners deserve honesty, transparency, and quality craftsmanship—none of which were delivered here. My experience with Amish Roofers reflects a pattern of careless work, questionable billing practices, and unprofessional behavior.

I strongly advise anyone considering this company to proceed with caution and thoroughly research alternative, reputable roofing contractors before committing.
