I ordered seeds and they arrived just fine. My three-pack of tomato plants, however - still waiting. They were supposed to ship after April 22 - here it is a month later and no movement. I opened a... See more

Iffy customer service and slow shipping
The variety of live plants is good, prices are a little high, but their shipping policy is outrageous! When I went to check out, it gave me a ship date. Turns out that date means virtually nothing and after speaking with customer service, that date is meant as an estimate. After paying $20 for shipping, with so many people offering free shipping and the ability to receive my products way quicker, it makes zero sense to order from Burpee.
Edited to respond: I fully understand planting times in my zone, I just dont think its very transparent or productive to say shipping 2/16 if you really mean 2/28 or somewhere around there. It didnt ship that window week. But then when it does finally ship, it took 8 days to get here, LIVE plants! Again, I don't want to pay for whenever and however long shipping with evolving ship dates that are meant to just reference a time frame (I bought $80 worth of plants, bare roots and seeds with $20 additional cost for shipping.)
It's not that big of a deal honestly, I dont mind waiting on packages, but customer service was absolutely rude, and I am completely unclear what 2-3 weeks changes for my planting zone. The shipping "window" should be way more clear on their site and when you check out, period.
The shipping problems were disappointing, but, in the end, fairly excusable. The customer service response and frankly, the response to this review, is just not. Neither my customer service interaction or their response to my review does anything to "resolve" any of my issues, it only serves to absolve any responsibility.
So, shady "time windows", flat rate shipping of live plants and rude customer service, check.
Incidentally, the bare root was fine, the asclepias was not 1 plant like I had bought, but was a bare root and was fine, but the 3 plants are questionable and wilty, so we will see, I just got them last night.
Customer service update: My 2nd experience with customer service was better, albeit long at 34 minutes, and I was able to resolve the dead plant with a re-ship (fingers crossed), re-ship of the bare root with a plant, refund of a non shipped item and an apology. I raised my review from 2 to 3 stars accordingly.

Slow
Slow. They charged my credit card immediately but sat on my order a week before shipping it. Then it took another week to arrive because they used a cheap shipping rate. Then they had the gall to claim it arrived 4 days sooner than actual.
Other seed companies sent my seeds first class.

The Website Stinks
Product is generally good, but your website ordering process is impossible. I had ordered before so you said I had an account. I asked to reset password. Did that. It wouldn’t take (yes, I met all the strong password...) 3x. Then, you locked me out. Idiotic and terrible. I’m done. I’ll find another source.

Customer service lies to you!
Shopping was ridiculous. I had to keep readding items to my cart. Any pause in searching emptied my cart. So I made a list added all at once and it went through. I had to enter the code twice. Because when I entered in the payment info the price showed the original price. Ordered on Jan 4. By the 12th it still showed pending shipping. I called to ask about it. I was told it shipped out on the 11th and the website hadn't updated. Lies! My package was not actually mailed out until 16th. The lie infuriates me!

Ordered garlic to plant
Ordered garlic to plant - the bulbs I got looked like they had been stored in a basement for a year! Alot were soft - alot had brown spots on them- alot were sprouted- the actual bulbs they sent me were NOT healthy! I hardly got any rows in cause of the condition of the garlic they sent me! Poor quality!
Wrong seeds, poor compensation.
My son in law, who purchases seeds and plants from Burpee every year, added San Marzano tomato seeds to his order for me this spring.
I my usual manner, I sprouted twenty plants and repotted them twice, before setting them in the garden.
Their growth was strong and vigorous and was encouraged that I would have a great tomato harvest, to put up a lot of sauce . I had many hundreds of flowers, but son became very disappointed when all of the plants produced varieties that were nothing at all like San Marzano tomatoes.
The fruits varied from plant to plant, from cherry, to grape shapes, to heavily lobed fruits. Some are like small Roma's.
When I contacted Burpee about the issue, they immediately refunded the purchase price of the single pack of seeds.
They did not and would not compensate me for the loss of a full growing season and all of the labor of working the garden. We will not have our stock of organic sauce for the whole year and with food prices. I feel that they should have offered a voucher for next year .
We will not be buying from Burpee again. Seeds of Change will get our business.
I purchased Burpee sugar snap pea seeds…
I purchased Burpee sugar snap pea seeds ('Super Snappy') from a local retailer in Ontario, Canada in May, 2022. What is growing in my garden are Snow Peas, not Sugar Snap Peas. I am very disappointed.

So disappointing
So disappointing. Most items arrived months after promised ship date. Tiny plants of poor quality. Many plants still backordered with no eta. They sell their plants at walmart and they are so much better. Never ordering from them online again.

Poor customer service
Placed an order for 15 plants in March. Order was scheduled to ship according to my zone. Shipped late and was missing one plant with four additional dead/dying plants. Called for a replacement/refund and the system was down so I was supposed to receive a call back. Never did and had to call back myself. I had to submit photos of the plants and still didn't hear back. Called again and ordered replacement plants, although I couldn't get the same plants because they were out of stock. Over 3 weeks later I called again to see when or if the plants had shipped. Was told that they would ship the week of June 6th. I asked for a refund instead because it was past time to plant the garden. I am now waiting for the refund and will dispute with my bank if I don't receive it soon.

Fig replacement plants
I ordered 4 figs in zone 6 and they arrived in March. I waited until May for them to start growing, and when I called Burpee Customer Service, they agreed that the figs were likely dead and they sent 4 replacements. They were unable to resend the Chicago Hardy's and instead we decided to substitute Honey Celeste. They should arrive this week. Thank you very much! Customer service was very helpful.

Terrible customer service
I ordered 12 cauliflower plants. When they were not shipped in a timely manner I canceled the order through customer service. Sometime later they shipped 12 tiny sickly plants which all dies within 24 hours. Emails to customer service go unanswered. Once a decent company has become TERRIBLE, go elsewhere for your gardening needs

terrible decline in the quality of this company this year at every level
terrible decline in the quality of plants, complete absence of secure packaging, and disjointed communication and information when dealing with customer service this year. I was a repeat customer for a few years but I will never go back after this year. I was sent a severely diseased plant, every package had plants that were unsecured, arrived unpotted as a result in many cases with the soil laying in the bottom of the cardboard box because not one of the shipped packages (which were three this year) had the plastic plant holders sealed to secure the plants and shipping.
They had charged me for plants they didn’t ship and made no notation that they were ever going to be shipped and when they said they were going to reship they had no record of the plant ever having been ordered by me. it was a surprise when it arrived today but no surprise that it arrived in unpotted in a pile of dirt in the bottom of the cardboard box.
Giving a star for replacing the diseased plant.

Do not buy anything
Do not buy anything from this company.
This was the first and last time I use burpee seeds. I ordered $50 worth of seeds both vegetables and flowers for this springs planting season and only one pack came up but died a day after breaking theough the soil. I got a refund for some of the seeds but not the whole order.

Update to Disappointing Sunflower Seeds and Pentas
1) I ordered 30 Tiger Eye Hybrid sunflower seeds. The packet contained only 27 seeds. I planted them and, as the information on the packet stated, they germinated in 7-14 days. Well, 16 germinated. The remaining 11 still haven't sprouted in over 21 days. I am disappointed.
2) I also ordered 4 Starcluster Red Pentas. They arrived with flowers and dirt strewn in the package. That may be because the package was delivered on its side rather than upright as clearly indicated on the box. I wrote a Customer Service review on Burpee's site mentioning this and expressing surprise that the shipper information was nowhere to be found. Here was the response to my review:
"Your review has been moderated. It cannot be published to the website, but..our staff has read your review and values your contribution even though it did not meet all our website guidelines. Thanks for sharing, and we hope to publish next time!"
Again, I am disappointed in Burpee.
I heard from Burpee today, offering me a refund or replacement of the sunflower seeds. I replied by email that I would like replacement. Moreover, Burpee explained that my review of the pentas was not published because it dealt solely with delivery. I responded that I just wanted Burpee to know that the pentas were sloppily delivered and that I did not know who the shipper was because I had not received tracking information from Burpee. I was not seeking a refund or replacement of the pentas.
Second update: Still waiting for the replacement sunflower seeds that Burpee promised to send.
Final update: Yesterday Burpee sent me a 30 seed replacement packet (29 seeds inside) so I am editing my recent experience from 1 to 5 stars. Hopefully these seeds will all germinate.

Never again
I thought I was ordering plants, what arrived were sad looking seedlings. Of 9 echinacea plants, one was totally broken off from its roots completely, the other 8 had only 2-3 sets of viable true leaves, barely bigger than freshly sprouted seedlings—and many leaves were black and falling off. A $14 agastache arrived with two sets of true leaves, about an inch tall. Of four Russian sage, $14 each, 2 are about 6” tall, one is broken, and one is barely 3” tall. I wish I could put pics in this review. I emailed customer service, historically it takes a while to get a reply, I’ll update this review once Burpee gets back to me. If I had wanted seedlings I would have started my own, and they would have been a lot healthier than these.
Update: customer service got back to me quickly, and refunded more than I requested, which I really appreciate. The reason I’m leaving my rating at 1 star is because the experience over all of trying to get the plants I want was really rough. Customer service was never great, usually emailed responses took a long time (a week or more), and sometimes I didn’t get a response at all. Even after the refund, the truth is that I wouldn’t buy what arrived from burpee at the price I payed—for the money they got from me, even after the refund, I still did not get good value for my money; I wouldn’t have purchased the “plants” I’m left with for what I ended up spending even after part of the cost was returned to me.
Thank you for trying to make it right, Burpee, but really, never again.

TERRIBLE Customer Service! DO NOT PURCHASE
TERRIBLE! I am a new gardener and have a LOT of space I was hoping to fill. Burpee is the only name I know and I thought they were the final stop for all things 'seeds and plants'. I excitedly ordered some berry plants from Burpee after a lot of research and waited for them to show up. After two weeks, I had not received a shipping notification, so I inquired if they had been shipped yet. Customer service was great and wrote back immediately and said they had shipped the previous day (although I had not received notification like I was supposed to). Then, when the plants arrived, I only received one kind of plant, but not the second. They were not in the packaging. I even took pictures of what was in the box (fortunately, I tend to document everything). I wrote them and mentioned that I hadn't received the other berry plants and could they send them. This time, I received no response. I called and spoke with a wonderful customer service lady who, after a lengthy conversation, was able to tell me that she had arranged for the plants to be sent to....I even received an email indicating this had happened. Now, nine days later I receive another email from Burpee Customer Service indicating that they already sent all my plants the first time, with a link to my original order. I emailed them and just told them to refund my money for the second set of plants because I didn't have time to deal with this further. They wrote me back almost immediately and told me the raspberries should have been in the original box. Can I get off this merry-go-round???? I cannot beat my head against the wall any longer. I am not sitting in my basement lair orchestrating some elaborate ruse to con the Burpee corporation out of 10 tiny, raspberry seedlings. I am just trying to get my garden in the ground and receive what I paid for. I will be disputing this charge but I also wanted to let people know NOT to order from them. If you have any issues at all, they will NOT be resolved and you'll end up beating your head against a wall, too. Save yourself the headache and buy local. That's what I'm going to do going forward.

Although the seeds did germinate
Although the seeds did germinate, it took longer than other systems. ONce you take them out you get damaged roots or the soil comes apart. alot is destroyed before transplanting. very disappointed.

They have gone downhill :-(
I WAS a repeat customer. I ordered tomato plants on March 12th and got an email confirmation of purchase. A couple weeks later, no shipping info or any communication from Burpee. I sent a follow up email. 8 days after my first email still no communication from Burpee so sent another follow up email. No response to that email either! FINALLY, 23 days after my purchase they sent a tracking number....with no explanation or apology. They lost a repeat customer. It's ridiculous to have to chase them down to get my EXPENSIVE plants I paid for (250% more than the tomato plants at hardware store). I am NEVER buying from them again.

Shipping and plants are great!
So I ordered on a Saturday 3/12, 2 days before my zone opened for shipping and they don't ship on weekends. It's my first time ordering and I couldn't find anything than their standard verbage for shipping...even in reviews. So I wanted to share that I got my order on 3/23. I got 6 heathly honeysuckle vines and they were pack with care and protection. I was of course concerned after ordering when I saw some of their reviews, but I will be ordering from them again!
I even had a goof up when I entered my shipping info (silly autocorrect/autofill on my phone) and was able to call and get it corrected. The woman was so very kind and professional. Thank you for the amazing experience and wonderful plants!

I have done business with Burpee for…
I have done business with Burpee for over 20 years. Now they tell me they cannot ship anything, even seeds, to Alaska anymore. I can order and receive seeds from England and Ireland but I cannot order from a business in the United States. This is NOT OK. I will no longer do business with Burpee.
