We arrived at the property in the evening and it looked lovely with its beautiful garden and lake. When we went inside there was a strong, deeply unpleasant smell throughout the property, partially masked by the smell of very strong chemical cleaners. It had not been cleaned well either with dirty windows, large number of cobwebs, mud on the floor, and one toilet was visibly dirty. The sofas smelled so badly that nobody would sit on them and we did not want to unpack our bags. We tried to air the property by opening doors and windows but after a couple of hours we realised that the smell was not going to go. We could not stay there even for a night so with no other options we drove back home. Neither the cottage company or the owner have acknowledged there was a problem with the smell and did not offer any refund or alternative accommodation. Having stayed in many holiday cottages in the past, this is by far the worst experience we have ever had.
