SCAM Company, Overpriced, Didn't make the 1 month guarantee

I purchased CRAM’s “one month expedited” LP pressing service. After one month had passed, Adam Merchant claimed there was a “QC problem” but provided no meaningful evidence beyond a vague image of a black corner that could not be verified as relating to my order.

Over the following month, I experienced repeated delays, shifting explanations, and attempts to attribute the issue to factors outside CRAM’s control. During this time, I independently contacted the pressing plant used for the job, XDISC in Poland, who confirmed in writing that there was no QC issue and that the delay was due to the order being submitted late by CRAM.

Despite having paid for expedited service, the order was delayed by approximately for an additional month. When the LPs were finally delivered, the product quality was significantly below industry standard and among the poorest I have received in over 15 years of manufacturing vinyl.

As a direct result of these delays, the artist missed the opportunity to sell stock during a tour, resulting in lost revenue. Throughout the process, communication from Adam Merchant was inconsistent, rude and unhelpful, and responsibility for the delay was not appropriately acknowledged. I have read that many customers have expeirenced the same level of service from Mr Merchant and I can only say do NOT use this company or you will be very scammed of your money like I was.

Edit: Several of these statements are categorically false, and the rant expressed by Mr Merchant is exactly the kind of communication we experienced when using his so-called services.

Cram Duplication, operated by Adam Merchant, agreed in writing to an expedited one-month turnaround for this job, with payment split into two instalments: part at the outset and the balance at the end of that one-month period *prior* to shipment. This was something he agreed to accept in writing. This was a higher-priced service specifically for speed and is advertised as such.

When it became clear that the timeline would not be met, a “QC issue” was ficticiously introduced as the explanation for delay. No verifiable evidence was ever provided despite repeated requests. In standard manufacturing practice, a genuine QC issue is supported with clear photos and video of the defect. That was not provided here. The single image supplied did not demonstrate any meaningful issue. I also confirmed that minor cosmetic imperfections would not have prevented shipment due to the urgency of the artist’s tour.

When I continued to press for proof, the position changed to claim that production only began from final payment, effectively adding an additional month. This was not part of the original agreement and was introduced retrospectively.

I independently contacted the pressing plant, XDISC out of Poland, who confirmed in writing that there was no QC issue of any kind with this release and that the delay related to when the order was submitted, when I contacted Merchant about this revelation that he was lying, he became furious.

This was a time-sensitive release tied to a tour, and the delay resulted in missed sales opportunities. Personal remarks about tone do not change the underlying facts.

The statement that my claim failed is also untrue. The matter proceeded to court and was resolved satisfactorly.

This review reflects my documented experience, supported by written correspondence and third-party confirmation.

Reply from Cram Duplication

Thanks for taking the time to leave this review Michael. I'm quite glad to respond here in a public forum.

Far from being a scam company, we had the misfortune to have dealings with Michael from Whirlwind Records, who turned out to be the most aggressive, rude and toxic individual we've ever had to deal with. A true example of internet narcissism at it's very worst. They happen about once year by the way folks.

THE TRUTH:

We don't offer a 1 month turnaround on anything. And we don't guarantee anything either becasue of the nature of vinyl pressing and all of it's facets.
Michael was quite pushy from the off and we agreed to try and press some records for him in 4 weeks, foregoing test pressings to speed things up.
The agreement was proforma payment as is normal, however Micheal asked if he could pay 'some' upfront and the rest in two weeks time. I reluctantly agreed because honestly, his tone was just totally off from the start considering we were offering to bend over backwards to help him.
Unfortunately, the two week mark came and the payment hadn't been completed. Then another promise was made for completion of payment and that came and went, no payment.
Out of hope really that he was a decent chap, I kept the job going although I didn't need to, payment having not been completed.

Subsequent emails regarding payment were ignored, until at the 4 week stage Michael finally got in contact to say he's completed payment and demanded that the records be with him immediately and if not, there would be consequences to pay.

Wow! Thought I. What an absolute arsehole and with us trying to help him out? And him not paying?!

At this point, the records had been pressed but the sleeves we made and sent to our plant for packing and delivering to Germany were damaged in transit so the plant agreed to remake them for us. This of course added extra time onto the four weeks which Michael was VERY angry about but this is the most important part:

Micheal DID NOT pay for the order when he said he would. He was dishonest, rude and aggressive and that is an understatement. The accusations of lies are unfounded. I was totally honest with him explaining that if you're an arsehole to people trying to help you, they stop wanting to help any more. He didn't seem to get it. In the end regardless of sleeve reprints, I went by the book:

I informed him that as per our terms and conditions, the pressing would be delivered in 4 weeks from his completion of payment, which it was, to the day.

Honestly though, even if the sleeves hadn't needed replacing I would STILL have made sure the order was only delivered 4 weeks from completion of payment, as per our agreement becasue of how awful he is.

That would be the end of the story you'd think? But no, Micheal and Whirlwind Records tried to take us to court to the tune of £6000 - that of course failed for the above reasons, so now he has resorted to defaming our friendly little service, (run for musicians, by musicians) online.

Micheal: Your review stands with our other 3 negative reviews as a prime example of the worst of the worst of that any small business owner trading on the internet can be subjected to by a complete stranger. In this respect at least: well done, congrats, you win.

TO SUM UP: I run this business with the attitude that if people are nasty or awkward or rude or aggressive towards us for no good reason, they get that back. Exactly the way two people would interact face to face without the internet to hide behind. If you came into CRAM HQ with an attitude like that, you'd be asked to leave immediately.
This philosophy has meant that we get to ONLY work with cool people. And it works. But you do get the odd bad apple hiding in plain sight.

I found the whole process so simple

I found the whole process so simple, my needs were a minimum order of Jewel Case Cd's. I pressed buy, sent my files through Dropbox and paid. 5 days later my Cd's arrived. No scratching of heads and frustration.

Easy ordering process

Easy ordering process, speedy responses and great pressings to vinyl. My friends were impressed by the sonic quality of the vinyl when they listened.

This would have been a five star review however the pressings were delivered 2/3 weeks later than I hoped for. Would definitely use Cram again.

This was the 2nd vinyl pressing

This was the 2nd vinyl pressing with Cram duplication, and the quality of the product was just as good as the first. 180g vinyl does feel nice in the hands, that extra bit of weight feels premium. Test pressings arrived in a timely manner, however these did take longer than the first vinyl (which is understandable as vinyl is still gaining more listeners globally).

Be prepared to wait as given delivery times are approximate. As mentioned above, vinyl sales are increasing, pressing plants are getting busier, lead-times will slip but the wait will be worth it.

Great service, great comms and the quality of the overall product is superb.
