A Minefield of Research to a Dream Delivery: Our Experience with Ian Swift

Researching a professional, trustworthy motorhome showroom to begin our journey on sourcing our ideal "home on wheels" felt like navigating a minefield—until we met Ian Swift at the NEC Caravan Show in Birmingham.

Ian was phenomenal! We received caring, expert, and knowledgeable advice from the outset. What meant the world to us was his genuine desire to support us in finding the right vehicle for our needs; at no point did we experience the usual sales pressure we had anticipated.

From the moment we met him until the time we took delivery, his customer service was second to none. This was perfectly complemented by his shared, genuine excitement that we had found the motorhome that would take us on journeys we had only dreamed about.

If you are looking for first-class, top-tier service with a genuine desire to match the motorhome to you, without any sales pressure, then Ian Swift is highly recommended. You will certainly be in the best hands. Thank you Ian!

We have had a most disappointing…

We have had a most disappointing experience with Erwin Hymer (travelworld). The initial interaction was good; positive and they have an impressive range of vehicles and the facility is fab. But there it stops; the handover of a new vehicle was OK but not comprehensive with many questions unanswered, the tracker system was not ready, and the handbook was missing. From there it went "downhill". After-sales are hard to reach but knowledgable when they make contact. But, several thing were defective and need attention. Eventually I returned to get the warranty items sorted only to be told that two of the three couldn't be done (not enough time and one function wasn't on my model of vehicle). So 150 miles for the least important item to be rectified.

Ownership of Camper means stress. Not reliable at all.

My advice is to stay away from Hymer. My worst experience ever. I will come back with details. I have realised now that the trade-in of my Grand California for a Hymer Semi was a big mistake. Once I have back my Hymer repaired (if ever), I will sell it. Brand new with 675 km (back and forth from the service a couple of times).

When Glossop caravans failed to help…

When Glossop caravans failed to help with a problem (hydraulic legs stuck down on site) on a new Aruba, the Hymer head office dispatched David and John in a Van and the issue was resolved with out drama, its a shame that Glossop caravans couldn't do the same, a big thank you to David and John for the work and for Hymer understanding the predicament and resolving within 24hrs. John and Dave went above and beyond fixing a few minor snags as well, top lads and a credit to your brand

I can’t give a minus or even a zero 1…

I can’t give a minus or even a zero 1 is the lowest and that’s too high.
I bought an Elddis Chatsworth 860 last September used twice discovered a leak in the roof purely by luck that it rained the second weekend that I noticed it. But it got so bad the whole roof space is filled with water pictures taken in January of a frozen ceiling from front to back. We are now in the middle of March I have no caravan and no £35k dealership still has it and not responding to emails. In 6 days I have to instruct a solicitor to get my money back. They make not fit for purpose products called they call it solid construction. See other online reviews about Erwyn Hymer products don’t waste your money, buy another make.

Update - Erwin hymer/Elddis uses "not fit for purpose" ABS plastic panels that crack badly. Avoid, Avoid: Erwin Hymer/Elddis does NOT care.

Update - I won my Erwin Hymer/Elddis (cracked end panels) caravan case at court. The Judge was highly critical of the Dealer/Elddis for ignoring (for 2+ years) the Expert's damning report regarding the cracks on my shoddy Elddis caravan. Buy at your peril. Erwin Hymer (Elddis) does NOT care & continues to use "not fit for purpose" inferior flimsy ABS end panels that breach the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (UK) plus other UK Acts of Parliament. These panels seriously crack and leave customers a £4500/each bill to replace. Elddis is an utterly disgraceful company that lies to valuable customers.
p.s. Erwin Hymer sometimes refers to ABS as "injection moulded plastic" - to disguise their notoriously bad ABS plastic panels . Don't be fooled, I wouldn't like other customers to suffer as we have!)

here's my previous review:-
I wonder how many customers are taking Erwin Hymer/Elddis (or their dealers) to court at the moment for truly shoddy Elddis caravans and misrepresentation of their non-existent 10yr water ingress warranty? We have 10 cracks on our Elddis caravan and the full warranty - but in our case Elddis has lied and lied & reneged on their moral/legal obligations -so much so the matter is now out of Elddis hands. Elddis know they are at fault but take a hardline with customers simply to save money. They have shafted so many of their loyal & blameless customers, including us. It's not surprising they now have an appalling reputation. They (via their dealers under the Consumer Rights Act 2015) need to be held to account by the courts for their utter rubbish and audacious lies. Decent dealers are also starting to shun Elddis because they too have had enough. Avoid Erwin/Hymer/Elddis like the plague - and find another manufacturer that actually cares (& who values you). Elddis doesn't! BTW: Elddis tried to blame us for the cracking - even though the caravan was stationary at the time and the issue is down to poor design/manufacturing according to an independent Expert. Elddis is the worst company (together with a complicit dishonest dealership we bought from -who is now banned from selling new caravans due to other serious incidents with other customers) that I have ever had the displeasure to deal with. Never, ever, again.

Disgraceful company with no scruples or morals, 2 year old caravan should not be un roadworthy and un towable

Bought an Elddis, Crusader Mistral brand new in 2022 the top of the range caravan. The brochure boasting SoLiD construction and unique bonding that has been in all caravans and motorhomes since 2013 model year to date! Press releases written and video's made of how this bonding is stronger than anything you wish to fix, the glue / bonding to, it will never fail and how we the consumer are getting a 10 year warranty boasting the best in rigidity and durability that's out there. In the video and press releases they show how they put the caravan through enormous pot holes and drive over speed humps at speeds that we would never consider and boast at how they load them to capacity and beyond to show their caravans can take it and do this on such surfaces in Germany, Belgium and the UK to simulate 20,000 - 30,000 miles (depending on what source you read / watch) to give an average reading of how many miles a caravan can withstand in its lifetime according to Elddis.

Well, from day one, (day of collection) we had a caravan that had a list of faults and in hindsight wish we rejected the whole thing. Cabinetry, hinges, upholstery, rusty towel rail, bed board, leaks, electrical failure, water pump failure, water tank leak, windows leaking and now damp readings at 40% and a 'floating floor' as its known in the industry. No signs of any bonding used where its failed only rivets being used in wood, very strange fixing style to be seen when you've been in the business for 60 years with industry leading bonding at your disposal.

In 2 years 4 months this caravan has been assessed by an AWS member and has been deemed as un roadworthy and not fit to tow!
The dealer, Raymond James Caravan's Ltd have had our caravan twice for routine servicing at their specified times and a further four times for warranty work and will be going in again for damp issues, with our caravan reading 40%. Not at any point have they raised their concerns about the quality of the caravan that we deem under the Consumer Act 2015, not fit for purpose, not of satisfactory quality and clearly does not hold any durability. RJ themselves have been in the business for 60 years too.

We've had and still having endless problems, we've had so many parts replaced it's resembling Trigger's broom! (Old 'Only Fools and Horses' joke)

We have written to RJ and to Elddis regarding this caravan, 34 faults in 28 months with the last two being a major concern. Damp and now the floor has collapsed in the front corner which is why it's been deemed un towable.

Apparently this is our fault according to Elddis and RJ, this can be attributed to driving over sleeping policemen and driving through pot holes, confussed?, yes so are we. They have gone further and accused us of overloading the gas locker itself and told us this is our fault. I take it from that answer they do not believe in their own marketing and press releases or perhaps forgot it was out there. We have copies just in case they dissapear!

We have been caranning for 30 years and never have we experienced anything like this and in this time frame we should be enjoying our leisure pursuit. Not fighting these people in court!

If anyone wishes to have their say in court and cannot do it by themselves and wishes to get together for each of our claims then we would like to hear from you?!

(They don't allow email addresses in reviews)

I hope Trading Standards are keeping a close eye on this as touring caravans are not regulated like motorhomes and static caravans and it shows. About time these manufacturers were held accountable and we feel strongly that now is that time.

Elddis Erwin Hymer poor Quality

Will NOT purchase caravan/ motorhome made by Elddis Erwin Hymer Group. You buy new expecting you have reassurance if any problems arise they will be fixed under warranty. What a stressful experience we have encountered buying a Elddis Compass Caravan. Our first front panel was replaced when 18 months old due to a significant crack (this was when they had a three year warranty and was downgraded to one year). The second front panel has cracked again while standing still, which we can prove. They are not repairable as the fix won’t hold. Why would anyone pay £££££ for a part covered by a one year warranty taking the enjoyment away, as you are watching for cracks. Our van is full of cracks and if water gets in, your water ingress warranty does not cover you in many areas. We asked for an explanation why the panel has cracked in situ, and all you get is your panel is no longer covered under warranty. EHG must know the cause of the panels cracking. So wished we had stayed with our Swift. We’ve been told to cut our losses and get rid and don’t buy Elddis. Onwards to a Coachman

NO UK CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM EHG

EHG in the UK are only interested in Elldis. We had a Dethleffs motorhome and although they are the parent company they had no interest in helping us at all. Their primary interest is the wholesale relationship with their dealership network. The motor industry is not regulated in the same way as the financial industry so there is no incentive for them to worry about complaints from the end customer and they seem to use your relationship with to the dealer to hide behind. So If you have a problem with your dealer there’s nowhere for you to go. I would avoid the EHG range of products at all costs.

Absolutely outraged by @ErwinHymerGroup's refusal to honour their warranty for water ingress in my 2020 Affinity 520 caravan, citing technicalities inside the contract clauses. Despite clear evidence, they callously disregard their obligation, demonstrating a blatant disregard for customer trust and satisfaction. Their legalistic approach is disgraceful. Avoid dealing with them! #CustomerCare #ErwinHymerGroup"

When is a tourer not a tourer?

I have a 2022MY Buccaneer Barracuda caravan finally delivered in July 2022. This was a retirement treat designed to give us years of touring experiences.
It is the worst quality caravan I have had the misfortune to own
It was delivered 6 months later than quoted upon order and the faults started on day one. The shower cubicle trim was damaged, not picked up at pdi or in the factory. I pointed out on collection. The E&P system failed when I got home because Erwin Hymer had fitted the incorrect fuse rating and it blew on first use. No help from the dealer or Erwin Hymer but E&P technical support were fantastic and helped me diagnose the problem. I fixed it with a quick trip to Halfords.
There have been 12 different trim faults in the first year. Ranging from broken blinds and trim, to wrong size screws having been used in construction and peeling trim. Just shonky build standards and poor quality. 2 more serious faults are the battery has failed, and is waiting for replacement. But most seriously the ATC braking system failed 4 times. Twice leaving me stranded and calling the AA to rescue me. The caravan is currently stranded in the dealership with 5 warranty faults including the ATC making it undriveable.
When is a tourer not a tourer? Answer, when you need to have the AA on speed dial to use it.
I've written to Erwin Hymer saying that I don't want it back until it's fixed properly. If they can't do that then I want a full refund as the caravan is not fit for purpose.
This was the first Erwin Hymer group product I've bought after decades of owning Swifts, wish now I'd stayed with Swift.

I've finally sold it back to the dealer, took a £20k depreciation hit. Don't trust Erwin Hymer group to do anything after the shocking quality and diabolical service over this van. Promises mean nothing. Particularly if they're prepared to let this standard of product out of their factory. Latest issue was damp getting in through badly fitted roof seam trims, on an 18 month old van. Should be ashamed. I would give zero stars if that was an option. Update June 24.

Letter before court claim

To whom it may concern,

Re: Faulty Elddis 636 Supreme - Serial number SGET000EXHAVA5424

I have not had the inspection of the caravan promised by your technical I own after formally complaining. Having experienced a structural issue caused by what I have been informed by an engineer is a common fault in poor manufacturing process when the caravan was built I was asked by your team to take the caravan to a centre of your choice. I was informed you would look at the caravan to have it inspected by your team. I have now received confirmation that you have failed to inspect the caravan and have referred to the warranty claim not being valid rather than completing the process you said you would. Instead of inspecting the issue as promised for manufacturing fault you refer to the warranty and state you now not inspect it. I am now asking you to complete the inspection for a structural issue caused by a poor manufacturing process regarding the faulty caravan built at your factory. I am concerned that such a fault is a danger to me and my family as the front end is floating. I bought this in October 2019 and it has been in indoor storage and unused until Oct 2019. As the caravan was built poorly at your factory and has never been fit for purpose due to inherent issues at construction. I believe this must be fixed by you. I have had an independent assessment and been informed the repair required due to poor manufacturing standards if £3400.

I am once again requesting a full repair on the grounds that the goods were not fit for purpose under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

I would like a reply as soon as possible so that I know you have received this letter. If you don't agree to the repair, could you please then send me a detailed response saying why you don't agree.

To avoid taking court action, I am willing to use Alternative Dispute Resolution to resolve this problem.

If I do not receive a satisfactory response from you within 14 days of the date of this letter, I intend to issue proceedings against you in the county court without further notice. This may increase your liability for costs.

I refer you to the Practice Direction on pre-action conduct under the Civil Procedure Rules, and in particular to paragraph 13-16 which sets out the sanctions the court may impose if you fail to comply with the Practice Direction.

I look forward to your acknowledgment.

Yours faithfully,

Alan Little

Please check if you have this fitted

We have an Elddis 115 prestige motorhome 2017 which we bought last year (our third bus) which after doing some upgrades and repairs refixing things etc. is really good. It belonged to an elderly couple originally from new and was parked up throughout covid; low miles and immaculate condition.
Now the ticking time bomb moment came to light as the factory fitted cycle rack (by Elddis) never used by the original owners, became detached with our cycles on it whilst driving slowly around a roundabout in Valencia, Spain. Rated to 60kg it had 34 kg on it so well under spec, very fortunately we were not on the motorway and no-one was injured, only us shocked and disorientated about what had happened. Spanish locals were brilliant and helped us retrieve the still fully intact rack off the island roundabout and into a supermarket where we did our best to sort out what to do. We were in total shock to find the top and bottom brackets were fitted only using 16mm self tapping screws and a bit of sealant - bodge job doesn't even come close to describing it.
As I say, ticking time bomb that could have been fatal. We managed to limp into Zaragoza and sourced from a Fiamma dealer in Lloret a bracket fixing kit for this model supplied with bolts etc. Luckily I had a drill and tools, straightened our bent rack as best I could and fitted it back on to get home.
After contacting the dealer we discovered Elddis had fitted the bike rack. Well, they promised us the earth to compensate and repair our damaged rear panel etc. and even fit a towbar cycle rack because we've lost faith in rear mounted.
The vehicle was inspected by one of their approved repairers; he was stunned and did a daming report back in April. Guess what, they have done nothing but fob us off with parts not ready, excuses and still not repaired our motorhome or compensated us. We are now taking legal action and getting the repairs done ourselves as we cannot wait any longer or listen to their false promises.
Our solicitor is disgusted with Erwin Hymer and I'm sure we'll get recompensated accordingly. My main concern is if anyone has this same model or cycle rack please get it checked ASAP. We have been lucky, I'm sure the Spanish police would have held us responsible if a fatality had happened. As for Erwin Hymer customer service: absolutely disgusting and disappointing in our opinion. I've reported this to the DVSA to investigate and I now hope the people responsible get what they deserve.

Absolute nuggets

Absolute nuggets.
So I got my habitation certification done by a mega knowledgable engineering company. Firstly i asked him how high up the list in his view were the Erwin Hymer Elddis brand. His reply was " not high".
He picked up that from build the gas regulator has been incorrectly fitted. This defect could cause liquid LPG into your system. Also in the Toilet and shower there are areas where no sealant has been fitted from build. On top of this they inform me my warranty is void because they do not have any evidence of previous Hab certs even though I have a copy for every year. Absolute chancers think twice before you buy Erwin Hymer products
